Posted December 10th, 2009 09:37 PM IP I have been a card collector for 25 years. My dream card has always been the 1909 Ty Cobb T206 Portrait (green background). I have looked at it in magazines and card shops since I was in grade school. I am now looking at it in my living room. Loooong time com'in for this one:

As you know, card collecting is a collapsing business, so there are likely some bargains out there right now...hope you got a good price. Eliminating that Yankee odor since 2006!

Posted December 11th, 2009 12:04 PM IP The price was fair. The vintage card market is safe and remains stable. It is hard to flood the market with 60-100 year old cards and with companies like PSA and SGC who will authenticate...counterfeitting becomes extremely difficult. Anything late 80's and up is flat terrible. Hopefully things will turn next year. Topps was given the rights to MLB for 2010 and on. They will be the only company allowed to print using MLB logos. This should settle things down. It is rediculous right now. I collect all Tiger rookie cards and am currently at 12 different Verlanders. That is way too many. These numbers should go down in 2010 as value and interest go up. Upper Deck has already planned for this, though. The are coming out with a set using the players doing things other than Baseball. I am not sure how it will be received. I mean, who wants a trading card with Albert Pujols mowing his yard?

Pujols mowing his lawn? So Krotchy will have his own line of cards where he grabs himself in different settings? Leyland smoking heaters on the golf course. Man-Ram with his eBay barbeque. Zoom playing Guitar Hero. The unintentional comedy of this could be huge, but why would anyone want them? I hope we have diplomatic relations with the country that ball lands in.

Posted December 11th, 2009 05:05 PM IP I am not saying the cards are terrible. I am saying the bottom dropped out value wise for this era. My favorite set is the 1984 Topps (Mattingly, Strawberry rookie). Back then those two cards alone were worth $40 and $15. Now the entire set goes for about $25. Same thing with the '89 Upper Deck. The Griffey alone was $80...now the set is worth $80. They are still good looking cards. That is really what I am after. I do not ever plan on selling any of them. If I was in it for the investment...I could save a lot of time by lighting my $ on fire.

Wow. I guess I spoke too soon because I would definatley want a 2010 Leyland smoking heaters on the golf course. I could put that next to the 2010 La Russa passed out drunk at a stop light
Now my mind is racing. Way too funny.
Thanks for everyone's kind words and enthusiasm.

LaRussa passed out drunk, now that would sell. I want one and it doesn't exist. They should make sound cards too. Press a button and it play his alphabet sound byte: X, Y, Z, W, T, ZERO, 4, Y! I hope we have diplomatic relations with the country that ball lands in.

Posted December 12th, 2009 12:32 PM IP That's a great collectors piece and I'm jealous. I've got a nice little collection myself dating back to the early 50's. I've got almost every Topps Tiger card from 1960-1971, too. My prized card is a 1953-54 Gordie Howe. But that doesn't come close to a Ty Cobb! Who's on first? Yes, the butcher's name is Who.

They are kind of like USFL cards (please do not think I am comparing the NHL to USFL). They both have small, niche markets...but the people who collect them will open their wallet to get what they want. What kind of condition is it in?

My bad, its a 1957 Topps. I've got one of those and two 1958s. I should get them PSA'ed, but that's too expensive for me. Who's on first? Yes, the butcher's name is Who.
