Posted July 23rd, 2012 06:20 PM IP Welcome back Omar Infante. Nice of you to join us Anibal Sanchez.

Prediction: Rayburn gets DFAed to make room on the roster for Infante. Krotchy's release was long overdue. He should have been cut about six years ago, comepletely out of baseball by now, and where he belongs bagging groceries at a Krogers.

Posted July 23rd, 2012 06:57 PM IP I like having Infante back because he can play D and he is versatile. I don't mind having Anibal Sanchez on the roster, we can always use pitching.
I don't get how they cost us Jacob Turner. I hope we have diplomatic relations with the country that ball lands in.

Sanchez is a great number 2 or 3 starter. Maybe Turner isnīt progresing the way we expected. [img=http://files.sharenator.com/kermit_weed_gif_Kermit_the_Frog-s320x240-93065-580.gif[/img]

Posted July 23rd, 2012 10:25 PM IP Definitely a trade for the short term, but it makes sense. Infante is hitting about 80 points higher than the last time we saw him, and he can play his position. Sanchez is MLB material, while Turner is still getting there. This trade potentially fills two big holes in the current roster.

Posted July 24th, 2012 01:53 AM IP I just feel like we gave up too much to get this. A 30 year old utility guy who while hitting much better than our current second basemen still isn't that great with the stick. His OBP is .312, only 14 points higher than Ramon and actually 9 points lower than Worth. In fact, in roughly 300 more PAs, he's walked only once more than Worth. Granted he's good with the glove, so is Ramon. Better than Ramon, but Ramon is still better than average.
Sanchez is fine and all, but is adding him worth a Top 30 Prospect and a couple more prospects? I don't know. His ERA is second best on the team and his WHIP is tied, but he is in the easier league on pitchers too.
I hope this works out, but I don't feel like this is a put us over the top move and I feel like if we were going to trade Turner, we should get an over the top move. I hope we have diplomatic relations with the country that ball lands in.

DD is about 50-50 on these types of deals.
Think Aubrey Huff, Jarrod Washburn, Edgar Renteria, Gary Sheffield as "losses," and Miguel Cabrera, Doug Fister, Delmon Young, Sean Casey as "wins."
To answer Marlin above, a few lost "prospects" who've had success include Jair Jurrgens, Omar Infante, Matt Joyce, Casper Wells (and Andrew Miller/Cameron Maybin, who were well spent in the Cabby deal, or Curtis Granderson/Edwin Jackson as part of the AJax/Coke/Scherzer deal, so they really don't count).
Personally, I think he overpaid in this one, giving up 2 top prospects (good LH hitting catchers are uncommon and valuable - even if he was never going to be a Tiger while Avila was here & Turner wasn't a #1 pick for nothing...he'll be good, but probably 2 years away for sustained success) for a 2-month rental and a utility-type guy.
That said, I like both players and the team IS improved, no question, but we gave up valuable chips that may have fetched more. The Yankees, for example, fetched Ichiro for peanuts (and I'll bet he plays well for them)...we gave away potential purple chips.
Bottom line, we're a better team built for playoffs THIS year (which we were likely to make anyway), but we only get one shot as Sanchez is likely to fetch a 2-4 year deal at somewhere around $11-14m/yr...that would be a lot for a team on a stretched budget considering JV & Cabby are up again after next season. Eliminating that Yankee odor since 2006!

Posted July 25th, 2012 02:13 AM IP I agree with Rings here. I don't know if we had a shot at Ichiro, but they got him for nothing. While he doesn't shore up second base, couldn't we get more for Turner and Brantly? It seems like we should. And I like Infante and watching him tonight reminded me why. But I don't like him because he's amazing, I like him because he's useful and a good defender. He can play a lot of positions (even if he's obviously second base only here) and plays them well. But that's not something you give up Turner for.
I don't know a helluva lot about Sanchez outside K's. I'm interested to watch and see how he handles the tougher league. I hope we have diplomatic relations with the country that ball lands in.

Posted September 25th, 2012 11:55 PM IP After tonight, I'm curious what people think on this trade. I know in the long term, it may end up biting us if Turner ends up being special. Yet, I think I've heard people talk more Porcello language about Turner than Verlander. We'll see. If Sanchez can pitch like he did tonight and Infante play like he did tonight, they will be key cogs in a possibly long playoff run.

Posted September 26th, 2012 03:26 PM IP If we win the whole damn thing, it's a win. If not, it really depends on if we lock Anibal up and how much that costs... and of course how Turner turns out. I hope we have diplomatic relations with the country that ball lands in.
