Since Polly left second base has been a total mess. Even Leyland will have to address the issue at some point. I've wanted the Tigers to get Jamey Carroll for some years now. He's not doing well currently but generally can hit .270-.290 with a .360 OBP, make contact, move guys over, and actually field his position. With the Twins going nowhere he should be on the block. Also does anyone know the extent of Daniel Murphy's contract with the Mets? He doesn't have power, but the dude flat out hits and is a lefty. I would also suggest Danny Worth but for some reason that dude can't get a shot on this team to save his life.

Ramon or Worth should get a shot. Rabum did make a fairly nice play yesterday, but it's few and far between and he's hitting .138. I feel like if he had any sort of approach at the plate he could be a decent hitter, but he just wants to swing for the fences every AB in any count.

Letting Polanco walk was such a dumb move though. He'd still be there and helpful to this team. He liked it here, he played great here and the guy we moved him for plays third base for a different team. The whole situation was stupid. They gave Sizematters the slot, wouldn't be patient with him and then eventually shipped him for nothing while Polanco played 3B for another team when we need a 3B.

I hope we have diplomatic relations with the country that ball lands in.

D - we've been echoing your point for years. This is the true cost of management's irrational clinging to certain players.
We never developed a 3Bman, because we were always dependent upon Inge. We insisted that Sizemore was our 2Bman of the future (where he was never comfortable or solid) - instead of moving him to 3B, his natural position - because of Inge - and therefore never developed anyone else there. We traded him away for a pack of chewing gum because we were out of options.
Catcher was the same situation for years until Avila came along, as we had St. Pierre and the like (Santos, Sardihna, Rabelo) in between free agent castoffs (Treanor, Ryan, Wilson) and Pudge.
I agree with you - and several of us said the same thing during spring training - platoon Ramon and Worth at 2B and leave them alone. They'll hit .250 (+ take some walks) and play good defense, which should be more than enough on this team. Instead, we're cramming a round peg in a square hole (Raburn) and living with his cold start and poor glovework, in hopes that he gets hot sooner than normal...while also allowing Delmon to play LF. Ugh.
We're about to have problems in our bullpen too because Leyland will stick to "assigned" roles instead of playing matchups to close out games, even when his closer is showing signs of losing effectiveness (and 3-4mph on his fastball).

Fact is, the Tigers are a winning club BECAUSE Ilitch is willing to spend stupid $$ on stars...not because they use their resources wisely. In fact, the team overcomes a lot of misuse of resources.

An aside, did anyone else notice that our most effective reliever pitched to one batter in the seventh yesterday? It's hard to complain because it all worked out, but it was something I noted watching Blowtato's circus 9th.

Benoit has had back-to-back good outings though.

I hope we have diplomatic relations with the country that ball lands in.

This was my point above about Leyland sticking to "assigned" roles, even though Benoit & Dotal are clearly throwing better, while Valverde is clearly struggling. He did the same with Schlereth earlier in the season, bringing him into pressure spots with alternatives available, even when he was struggling.

That's JL--he thinks in terms of people and roles, not tactics and recent performance.

Valverde is an interesting problem. The guy's brain is entirely wired to close games. Use him less or use him in a different role, and you may render him permanently useless. It's a tough call.
