Posted January 26th, 2012 08:37 PM IP This escapes me. Why would Miggs be at third in 2012? Is it just me or should they both be 1B/DH alternating, and then if and when Victor comes back do you have an issue.
DK or god forbid Binge can hold it down and then you have an issue in 2013. We're All Behind Our Baseball Team...Go Get Um...Detroit Tigers...Go Get Um Tigers

Posted January 27th, 2012 07:06 AM IP I concur, but in the same breath, if we do make the World Series and obviously that's the goal, Miggy would need to play third.
I feel he could just take practice there for a good portion of the season though and maybe a couple sporadic games just to get the feel back. I hope we have diplomatic relations with the country that ball lands in.

Posted January 28th, 2012 09:38 PM IP He's at third because we'd rather look over there and see Miggy than ****ing Inge... okay with me. I'm willing to roll with it to see what happens. The offense will more than make up for it. "I don't believe in superstitions. I think they're bad luck." - Andy Van Slyke

Posted January 29th, 2012 08:28 AM IP Much like Peralta, it's not the balls that Miggy gets to that concern me. It's the ones he doesn't.
But yeah, it's not the Krotch, so that's a good thing. I hope we have diplomatic relations with the country that ball lands in.

Without looking, I think Inge is slightly higher, but they're pretty close. UZR is not, however.
I think jfine said it well, above, that Miggy's defense is secondary to a position that is historically an offensive spot. Inge blows and has no business on a major league roster.
If the reports of Cabrera being in good shape and happy to be back at third are true, then I'm growing cautiously optimistic that he'll at least be servicable with the leather. With the way Leyland shuffles lineups, however, I'd imagine that Miggy will still play some 1B & DH, especially this season. Eliminating that Yankee odor since 2006!

Posted January 29th, 2012 08:40 PM IP This is a look at the "infield defense" question in its entirety. As many of us have said, while none of the infielders are "good," Raburn is a far greater concern at 2B than anyone else:

I agree with you, Rings - Raburn at 2nd base is downright scary. Defense on the corners is secondary, but we have to have good defense up the middle if we want our pitchers to NOT give up 10 runs a game. "I don't believe in superstitions. I think they're bad luck." - Andy Van Slyke

Posted January 30th, 2012 06:42 PM IP I have no idea why we wouldn't roll Santiago at second every day because of having Prince and Miggy on the corners. Not even considering their defense. They'll mash so Raburn's "production" shouldn't be a big deal to anyone.

I'd go even further....I know the powers that be consider him a backup at best, but Santiago is actually probably our best leadoff guy. He'll never hit for power, but he takes pitches, works counts, will hit .280, runs ok - and doesn't strike out a ton. Hit Jackson 9th this year and let him get right. Maybe he moves back up down the road, but it's just a crime to have TWO lethal RBI guys miss out on 50+ chances a year because our leadoff guy can't put the ball in play.

Posted February 14th, 2012 11:03 AM IP Miggy is in shape and motivated to play 3B, which is probably a good sign in that he may devote himself to improving with the leather:
