Posted 5th October 2011 09:45 IP I have loads of reports to type up but have only got them on paper.
When I scan (via photocopier) it's automatically saved as a pdf which I can only copy as a whole picture and paste onto word but can't seem to edit the actual text.
So far I am just typing it up but there must be a quicker way ?! Abortion - It sucks the life out of you.

I've not tried it but this looks promising:
http://smartsoft-free-pdf-to-word-c...n.softonic.com/
OR this:
http://www.pdftoword.com/
Some pdf readers allow you to select the text of the pdf which you could then simply copy and paste into word You can see it, but not from here!

quite often those programs only work if the text was originally created in Word or a design package.
The scan is essentially a complete image, so that's why you can't edit the text, it thinks the whole page is a picture.
If you can't download any software that might help, then re-typing is pretty much your only option. Whatever fortune brings, don't be afraid of doing things

Begs the question, who is typing them in originally and to what. Kaff should be able to remove the scan stage of the process and get a electronic copy prior to report being printed out! You can see it, but not from here!

Also, I tried some software years ago in my old job, which scanned a document in then converted it to word more often than not the words were all jumbled up. It wasn't worth it so I ended up typing it all up anyway. http://www.doitforcharity.com/ngorman

Same. It never turns out right. If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

Well of course, there should be an electronic original somewhere, depending on the age of the docs, but that doesn't mean to say anyone knows or has access!

Posted 6th October 2011 15:09 IP The person who has the elctronic copy wasn't available and their colleague were unable to help. As this was against time I just had to type them.
In a previous job when I scanned a document I was able to then select the text and paste into word because it wasn't automatically saved as a pdf. Even if a lot of it was jumbled up, tidying it up was still quicker than typing the whole damn thing.
I was considering taking the documents home to scan but not only would it mean using up my own time but I very much doubt the headteacher would be ok with me taking home confidential files. Abortion - It sucks the life out of you.

You can get softwhere known as 'OCR' which will take a scanned image and convert it into editable text.
The software works out what all the letters are, and in what order - it can handle the scan being slightly on the slant etc.
This may clarify it:
