Why, Mrs M?

Because I'd wonder why. There should be no need to have anyone present except your line manager for a normal performance review.

I'd not be happy that suddenly I was being reviewed by two people if no-one else was.

Dunno. You could find some reason to ask if everything's OK 'at home'.

She lives alone (I bet she has cats). She meets blokes off the t'internet.

In fact I better be careful in case she finds her way here.

OK, scrub that idea, it would have entailed you having to be nice anyway.

I knew someone whose father was a doctor and had a very good shorthand for that - SWB, standing for sex with biscuits...

"You're a thick sh1te."

Re: communication, going to say there has been some improvement with relations (as there ain't a grievance put in every other day) but further improvements can be made, then ask her for her input on how to do this.

I've also typed up some written procedures for other aspects, and giving these to all people in same job so she can't feel victimised. In all my years working I just assumed basic common sense with people, but now it seems you have to tell them exactly what is expected, i.e. working hours you're employed to do.

Common sense is not as common as it should be! Luckily at my work, the majority of people come in and get on with it. They're here to work, don't take the piss, don't cry at the slightest problem. However there are one or two girls in a certain department who like things their way, who complain to managers and directors about the tiniest thing! Annoying.

A couple of months ago, we had a girl come to work in the office who had left to go to uni to study law. She knew the job, and was available so it was easy to take her back on.

We have two PDQ machines, and one phone line. Now common sense would indicate that if one wasn't connecting properly, you would switch the phone lines, no? I was making a brew or something and I came back and whole office was chaotic! The girl was nearly crying, we had a rep on the phone kicking off, everyone else was panicking about the machine not working, everyone was avoiding responsibility (I don't know anything about it, it's not my job etc). I walked in and looked round and just though FFS, get a grip you thick f*cks!

Now I find it funny that someone that dozy will one day be a lawyer.

Yeah, I have a meeting in an hour with someone who came from a more 'robotic' part of the organisation. Here common sense prevails. He can't seem to distinguish when it's more appropriate to talk to someone on the phone or to send them an email. He also can't listen. Like the other day, I said to him I called someone (who turned out to be at lunch) I'd left a voicemail I think I used the word voicemail several times as he makes a five minute convo last an hour. He then turns around and says, in future can you copy me in to these messages? VOICEMAIL!!!!!!

I despair.

What's a PDQ machine, Nat?

Should I feel thick for having to ask?

Not at all. It's a device for taking credit card payments. You know when you pay by card in shops and restaurants etc? That's usually a similar thing

Ah, yes. I know what that is. And I know what you mean about common sense. At my last work place, we had two tills and would take one outside when the weather was nice. The lady in charge took the till out, plugged it in outside and it wouldn't work. We did the whole lunchtime service with one till, inside. 5 hours later, after a two hour phone call backwards and forwards to an IT specialist, he promised to bring us a new till. When he turned up, he swapped the two cables around on the old till and it worked. I wouldn't like to know what that mistake cost our boss.
