There was an article in the paper today about god parents and how a people may not be taking their responsibilities seriously, huggies post jogged my memory. Do you think god parents are an out dated concept? Are you a god parent? What role does that involve? the article stated that more often than not now it’s just a way of showing friendship between two people rather than any care for a child, particularly with regards to ensuring the child is brought up in the church.

Even the churches these days acknowledge that it's more of a symbolic status than a role. My family's church the priest gets the godparents together before the ceremony and explains that if they aren't comfortable with the traditional 'promises' then they can jsut stay quiet for that bit.
I wouldn't say I'm religious (but from a religious background). I'm godfather to 3 of 5 of my nephews. I'd say I play a fairly active role in their lives. See them at least once a week, play with them, try to teach them right from wrong etc.
Mind you I do that for the 2 nephews I'm not godfather to as well!
Traditionally the godparents are also meant to be 1st port of call should anything happen to the parents in terms of providing them with a home etc. I know I'm down in one of my sisters wills as preferred guardian should the worst happen. You can see it, but not from here!

Posted 6th September 2011 12:27 IP I'm godmother to a friends daughter, who is 18 months now. I take my role seriously, but not in terms of the religious aspect. More in terms of spending time with her and making a special effort on birthdays and christmas. I guess I would see my role as encouraging development of morals and values rather than in taking her to church. Maybe the role needs renaming in this day and age!

Posted 6th September 2011 21:18 IP I have 6 God Children and my boys were Christened. I am there for them if they need me and the only ones I do not take an active role with have moved due to an army posting. It doesn't necessarily mean I take them to church, but I have on rare ocassions. I rarely go myself.
I enjoy a glass of red wine each night for its health benefits. The other glasses are for my exceptionally witty comebacks, sarcasm, and flawless dance moves.

Posted 12th September 2011 12:30 IP I'm a god parent. I see my godson when I can but it's not that often as they don't live in London. If his parents weren't around and they wanted him to be brought up going to church then I would make sure it happened. I don't think you need to be religious yourself to do that (and I'm not).
Whatever fortune brings, don't be afraid of doing things

My God son is a creationist thinker, i'd never take him to church
I teach them the moral values of Humanism.
(Why do i need a Diety/God to tell me?)
If he wants to go, then he's dedicated enouth to go himself. (LoL which he dont.)
