Posted 31st March 2010 15:58 IP Why Frank and not Francis?
I'm not keen on names that are shortened, they're nicknames. Thoughts become things, so choose the good ones.

They're not. Nicknames are never formed from your actual name.
Take me, for example.
Henk is a short or diminutive form of my name, Henryk. As is 'Ryk.
Henky Wenky, then, is a corrupted form of the diminutive form of my name. As is The Henkmeister, Henkster, Henkeroonie.
But nicknames? Why, those would be Bineapple Pollocks, say (or Huevos de pino, if you're feeling Hispanic), or Laughing Boy, or Schitface, or Torpedo Tits.
Actually, I made that last one up. Nobody ever calls me Torpedo Tits.

Unless it's Paul Francis, of course. Abortion - It sucks the life out of you.

I thought Frank was also a name. I know someone called Frank and it's what he was christened.

Well, we all have our peculiarities.
You're fond of the "epithet + name" formula up there, aren't you? Big Hamish, Wee Tam, Awld Alex, Brave Ulysses.
That kind of way.
It's Homeric, if you ask me.

No, it's rhyming slang for double-entry bookkeeping.
If it's not a name, what is it?

The key is in the second syllable of that word you just used.
Since it also has an adjectival use, 'Frank' can also be used as an epithet, by the way.

Let me be frank, the first syllable means it ain't a proper name. Thoughts become things, so choose the good ones.

You're really getting confused here.
Proper means 'of one's own' (see propre in French), as opposed to Common or Generic.
So a nickname can still be a proper name.

I don't like old fashioned, posh names on kids, I think it's a bit tight. In my year at school, there was a Charles and an Edward. That was weird then, but there's still people being called it nowadays. By the time they're in high school, the names will be even more out of date!
| On the contrary those names will never go out of fashion whereas names such as Brandon and Kylie etc will They are attached to trends not tradition.

Would that be Steven, Stephen, Stefano, Stefan, Etienne, Esteban, Istvan, Stepan.......?
Anyway, Stevie has taken a sabbatical, which should allow him to spend a little quality time with his other board.
