Posted December 8th, 2011 10:30 AM IP Puljos is a great player but to me any team who offered him a 10 year deal is crazy IMO. it will be interesting to see how the last few years of this contract are structured.
Ortiz accepts arbitration with the red sux
K Rod accepts arbitration with the Brewers
I think that if the Marlins were going to invest 10 years in a slugger they should go with Fielder. he is younger and to me would fit in with their core better, plus being left handed adds balance to their line up. I think we found Kyrie Irving

No way they want to pay someone 26 million when they are 42 years old!

Me, also.
It's a shame very few of the greats stay with their Organization. 2012 Stanley Cup Champions!

My posts from last January...
Quote: Whittaker wrote:
In 1965 Reds owner Bill DeWitt traded Frank Robinson to the Orioles.
It is considered one of the worst trades in MLB history.
Robinson had played 10 years with the Reds.
DeWitt defended the trade by claiming Robinson was an "old 30".
Robinson won the triple crown in his first year with the Orioles while leading them to a world series victory. He went on to play 21 seasons in his hall of fame career.
Albert Pujols turned 31 this month. He has played 10 years, all with the Cardinals.
The Cardinals principal owner-----William DeWitt Jr. |

Not only is St. Louis a unique small market team...Pujols is a unique player. He is:
-the best everyday player in MLB
-a terrific clubhouse leader and unifying force
-almost universally adored by Cardinal fans
-committed to charitable and civic causes in St. Louis.
-very consistent at performing at an MVP level
I also think Pujols gets signed before spring training.
But the big story here is that St. Louis hasn't got it done already. They have had plenty of time.
If Pujols doesn't have a contract by spring training, the relationship between him and DeWitt will be virtually destroyed. Pujols will view it as DeWitt hedging his bets in case of a Pujols injury or down year.
Pujols has committed to this organization and he wants commitment in return. He has played for less money than he is worth most of his career. He is still willing to give a 'hometown discount' but he wants it done before Feb. 18th.
If he isn't signed by then, I don't think he returns to the Cards this fall no matter what they do. I also don't think there will be any trades. Pujols can veto any trade and I think he will to avoid disrupting his family unless he gets a long-term contract(8+ years).
DeWitt and the other owners can easily afford to pay Pujols 25-30 million per year.
Would that hamstring their ability to contend for the playoffs over the next decade? That's debatable. But that debate won't matter much in the fall of 2021 when Pujols retires from the Angels with 780 HRs, 2,400 RBIs, 3,500 Hits, 2,300 Runs and a lifetime .325 AVG. |

Pujols needed to stay with the Cardinals but I don't discount the players union pushing him to the Angels for the largest contract that may have been offered. Also the agent is looking at his large piece of the prize. Angels working the LA market to steal as much revenue as they can from the Dodgers while that team is for sale.

Guy was a top prospect for a few years but never really got it going in Chicago or Baltimore.

Posted December 16th, 2011 02:47 PM IP Barry Bonds was sentenced to two years' probation and 30 days house arrest on Friday on a federal conviction for obstruction of justice.
Bonds, Major League Baseball's all-time home runs leader, faced up to 21 months in prison for giving misleading testimony before a grand jury.
A jury convicted Bonds in April.

Moneyball is such garbage. .....Billy Beane is so very highly overated. they reason they turned things around and won games is because they happened to have Hudson, Mulder, Zito, Giambi, Tejada, and Chavez all come up together and peak at that right time, or start juicing at the right time. Billy B is garbage I think we found Kyrie Irving

if the A's move to San Jose and get a real stadium and a decent revenue stream, then we'll see how he does

Posted December 29th, 2011 03:32 PM IP During the 80's, I probably went to more games in Oakland than Candlestick. A friend had A's season tickets that he rarely used and the Coliseum was much easier to get to (and more importantly, out of). That was before the freeway fell down during the '89 Loma Prieta quake. Then, they built Mt. Davis and the place went to seed pretty quickly.
Last week, the A's apologists were saying that they were dealing players to load up on prospects so that they'd have a solid club in place when they moved to San Jose. They were saying that the move would be announced any day. The A's ownership even purchased the Sainte Claire Hotel which is close to the proposed ballpark location.
The Giants have been very clear that they aren't giving up their rights to Santa Clara County. The A's ceded those rights in '93 when the Giants were floating a stadium bond vote in San Jose (after several failed votes in The City) for a stadium of their own. The Giants ownership was blackmailing the Santa Clara County voters by threatening to move to St. Petersburg if the bond didn't pass.
The bond measure failed but, Peter McGowan and his group stepped in, bought the Giants and put together the private financing to build AT&T Park. The Giants are saying that lenders put up the money in part because Santa Clara County was a guaranteed part of Giants territory.
A huge portion of the Giants fan base comes from the South Bay. They can ride light rail right to the park. The majority of North Bay fans identify with the Giants but, the North has a fraction of the South Bay population base.
It would be great if Bud Selig would make a definitive statement on the issue. Naw, that would require a set.

Posted December 30th, 2011 02:06 PM IP ok Torch maybe I was a little hard on Beane but I just don't get what what Oakland is doing. Trevor Cahill is sign thru 2017, Gio Gonzalez is under control thru 2015, and Andrew Bailey is under control thru 2014...there was no need to unload those guys now. all these small market teams want young , cheap players they can build around...well the As had them and they just unloaded them. the As have a good history but if money is that tight then just contract the team. maybe they got slightly more in return because these guys are all under control for a few years but in the long run how do you gain support to build a stadium with this kind of garbage? how do you expect to draw any fans when you traded away anything you had worth anything and gave up before you even made it to spring training? it is one thing if you are the Indians and you know you can't pay Sabathia the 161 mil he is going to get on the open market but the As are trading guys so they don't have to give them a 400,000 pay raise in arbitration.
how would we as Indians fans feel if the Indians decided to unload Santana, Masterson, Chris Perez, Asdrubal, Kipnis, or Brantley now for prospects and make some excuse for the future? I think we found Kyrie Irving

Posted December 30th, 2011 03:03 PM IP I don't get what the A's are doing either. They were dead last in MLB attendance last year while the Giants were 3rd. Their only real draw was their good young pitching staff. Who wants to drop $140 for 2 decent seats and parking to watch a AAA team?
I guarantee you that Giants fans will outnumber A's fans when the teams meet in Oakland this season. "It is not wisdom but Authority that makes a law."

how do you pay a major league staff when you are last in the Majors in attendance?
i hate it when the Indians trade away studs but it is what it is...if you can't afford to keep them and you aren't going to win with them, and someone makes you an offer you think improves your organization, then i can understand doing it WARNING: LITHIUM NO LONGER AVAILABLE ON CREDIT
