Posted February 20th, 2011 07:08 AM IP With our ace back and healthy this season our starting pitching will be better out of the gate. If Chapman develops in the bullpen he could be scary good. That being said, Votto and Rolen need to stay healthy and Bruce needs to take another step forward. Unfortunately, that still might not be enough to overcome St. Louis if Albert is playing for a contract with the starting pitching they have. I'm thinking we can pencil him as NL MVP right now.

Posted February 20th, 2011 10:41 AM IP I like what the Reds have put together.
Is Brandon Phillips or Drew Stubbs going to be batting leadoff this year???

Posted February 21st, 2011 07:08 PM IP ^^ I really don't like either of them batting lead-off. Phillips is a good hitter but not a leadoff hitter in my opinion he is better in the 5th or 6th spot to drive in runs. Stubbs has the speed and talent, but he strikes out waaay to much and can't hit a curve ball. All that being said i was suprised Jocketty didn't look to sign a leadoff man. But i am glad to have him on my side. Hopefully Chapman continues to develop into the closer's role we just can't trust Cordero. He blew a lot of games last year. CASE and POINT

Posted February 21st, 2011 10:21 PM IP I trust Stubbs in the lead off spot. He started to mature some towards the end of last year and I like his speed he just needs to work on his bunting and pitch selection. What I'm curious about is if we can trust Gomes in the outfield He left a lot of RBI hanging last year and struck out an awful lot. -Insurmountable is nothing

Posted February 22nd, 2011 08:45 AM IP Yes. Gomes is streaky. He had a stretch last year from the beginning of June to mid-July where he had some of the best stretches in baseball. Its crucial for him to be more patient at the plate. When he was patient last year he really hit his stride CASE and POINT

Posted February 22nd, 2011 10:01 AM IP I'm also curious to see how much production they will get from the shortstop position. Janish is great in the field but I'm not sure he has the offensive firepower. -Insurmountable is nothing

Posted February 22nd, 2011 11:31 AM IP He did a decent job in spots with the bat. It was a good signing to get Renteria. He could be a solid pinch-hitter and he is a solid back-up when Janish needs a day off. Another concern is the bullpen without Rhodes. The Reds bullpen was very suspect in the first half, but in August they were solid. They need good production from Chapman and Masset. CASE and POINT

Posted February 22nd, 2011 03:47 PM IP What's their rotation looking like? I'm guessing arroyo, cueto, volquez, leake, and wood. Does that mean Homer Bailey is the odd man out? -Insurmountable is nothing

Posted February 22nd, 2011 05:38 PM IP Projected lineup in my opinion:
1.Phillips
2.Stubbs
3.Votto
4.Rolen
5.Bruce
6.Gomes
7.Hernandez
8.Janish
Stubbs and phillips are interchangeable in my opinion CASE and POINT

1. Arroyo
2.Cueto
3.Volquez
4.Homer
5.Wood
Volquez is starting opening day, but he still has to prove to me that he can get back to his old form from 2 seasons ago. CASE and POINT

Posted March 3rd, 2011 06:40 AM IP I've honestly never really understood the word "leadoff" hitter? After the opening inning....just how many times does a leadoff hitter actually lead off an inning?? Way too much stock is put on that word.
Pitching is going to be the key - as it is for every team. IF the Reds can get the starting pitching and Chapman develops in the bullpen I like this teams chances. "Get Busy Livin....or get busy dying!"

Posted March 3rd, 2011 03:17 PM IP ^^ Pitching is the key for the Reds. but offensively their biggest weakness is the leadoff batter. Votto could've had 120 RBIs last year with a decent leadoff batter. It really is important to have a solid leadoff batter to set the table for the sluggers CASE and POINT

Posted March 5th, 2011 05:48 PM IP I think another thing that could hurt them is their depth. Other than shortstop and pitching, we really aren't all that deep with our utility guys. Thoughts? -Insurmountable is nothing

Posted March 8th, 2011 03:32 PM IP They have the Heisey kid who can play all outfield positions, he played very well in spots last year. Does anyone know if we signed Cairo and Hannigan? If we did we should be fine as far as depth is concerned. CASE and POINT

We'll need every game over the brewers we can get. I think they'll give us a great run this year for the division CASE and POINT

Not sure if you meant to call Milwaukee the Division Leaders...since the season started and they have yet to win a game this season. The Reds are the Division Leaders though, enjoy.
