He has put a Feb. 18th deadline on STL.
If a contract isn't agreed on by then, he will wait until the season is over and he will be a free agent.
If STL drops the ball on this, Cardinal fans will explode.

Posted January 18th, 2011 01:46 AM IP All professional athletes anymore are way overpaid.
But if Barry Zito can get paid Albert Pujols should be able to.

Posted January 18th, 2011 10:44 AM IP In 1965 Reds owner Bill DeWitt traded Frank Robinson to the Orioles.
It is considered one of the worst trades in MLB history.
Robinson had played 10 years with the Reds.
DeWitt defended the trade by claiming Robinson was an "old 30".
Robinson won the triple crown in his first year with the Orioles while leading them to a world series victory. He went on to play 21 seasons in his hall of fame career.
Albert Pujols turned 31 this month. He has played 10 years, all with the Cardinals.
The Cardinals principal owner-----William DeWitt Jr.

he is a player that I can't see ending up in NYY or Boston just because they already have Teixeira and A-Gone at 1B and Puljos doesn't seem like like the type to go somewhere to be a DH. I am sure they will bid on him if he hits the free agent market but I would think teams where he could play the field would have an advantage.
St. Louis is a smaller market team but they aren't your typical small market team. the generate a lot of cash as their stadium is almost always full...I tend to think they will get Albert resigned. however if they don't get it done by spring training and they fall behind the Reds and Brewers by the deadline it will be a tough choice for them. ride it out and try to resign him or use him to load up on young players. I think we found Kyrie Irving

All good points.
Not only is St. Louis a unique small market team...Pujols is a unique player. He is:
-the best everyday player in MLB
-a terrific clubhouse leader and unifying force
-almost universally adored by Cardinal fans
-committed to charitable and civic causes in St. Louis.
-very consistent at performing at an MVP level
I also think Pujols gets signed before spring training.
But the big story here is that St. Louis hasn't got it done already. They have had plenty of time.
If Pujols doesn't have a contract by spring training, the relationship between him and DeWitt will be virtually destroyed. Pujols will view it as DeWitt hedging his bets in case of a Pujols injury or down year.
Pujols has committed to this organization and he wants commitment in return. He has played for less money than he is worth most of his career. He is still willing to give a 'hometown discount' but he wants it done before Feb. 18th.
If he isn't signed by then, I don't think he returns to the Cards this fall no matter what they do. I also don't think there will be any trades. Pujols can veto any trade and I think he will to avoid disrupting his family unless he gets a long-term contract(8+ years).
DeWitt and the other owners can easily afford to pay Pujols 25-30 million per year.
Would that hamstring their ability to contend for the playoffs over the next decade? That's debatable. But that debate won't matter much in the fall of 2021 when Pujols retires from the Angels with 780 HRs, 2,400 RBIs, 3,500 Hits, 2,300 Runs and a lifetime .325 AVG.
When my wife turned 40 she started walking 3 miles a day. Now I don't know where the hell she is.

As the recent posters have stated, St. L isn't your typical smaller market team. They have consistently been in the 90 million range, and hit 100 million in 2008. Since they weren't really pushed before in shelling out the big bucks, I think they will do so in this case. 2012 Stanley Cup Champions!

Quote: Albert Pujols has averaged .331, 43 doubles, 41 homers, 119 runs, 123 RBIs his first 10 years.
Here’s the thing: Only nine players in baseball history have pulled off that Pujols average season even once in their careers. |

Posted January 25th, 2011 03:58 PM IP If he'd have been playing in a NY/Boston type market all these years he'd be easily the most iconic and talked about figure in the sport. Unfortunately, ESPN doesn't realize that baseball is played outside those 2 cities unless one of their talking heads happens to get hired to manage one of those "other" teams.

It's being reported that Albert will not accept a trade under any circumstances.

Not sure. Outside of NYY, St. Louis Cardinals is the richest tradition in MLB, and held in high regard as a Baseball City. 2012 Stanley Cup Champions!

Posted February 7th, 2011 11:08 PM IP Pujols and STL are "nowhere close" to a deal, if you believe what Pujols' camp is saying as of tonight. Take a nap at the ball game, catching up on some Z's. Buy me a five hour energy, take a nap with Hernandez and Ken Griffey. Snooze, snooze, snooze 'cause it's boring...if I wake up it is a shame. For it's 3, 4, 5 hours long at the old ball game.

Albert is reporting to spring training on the 16th so that is supposedly the new deadline.
Both sides seem to be playing chicken.

Pujols and the Cards were not able to come to an agreement.
ESPN says the Cards were offering a contract that would have put Pujols in the top 10(but not the top 5) dollar-wise.
I'm surprised they didn't go higher. I don't know how people can expect Pujols to accept a contract which would continue to underpay him.
This is bad for MLB.
It's bad for the Cards. It's bad for Pujols, who would prefer to stay.
Only the big market teams benefit.
It will be interesting to see how Pujols and the Cards perform this year. When my wife turned 40 she started walking 3 miles a day. Now I don't know where the hell she is.

If the chances that Pujols was staying in STL were 60%....no they're more like 45%. When my wife turned 40 she started walking 3 miles a day. Now I don't know where the hell she is.

Posted November 15th, 2011 07:37 PM IP He's making the rounds and will get looks from several places but only so many can afford to make a read bid. Same for Prince Fielder, only so many can afford to make a legit run at him. That's why I'm bbmind.
Coach Tressel went 9-1 vs. Michigan and won a NC. Thanks for the great run.
