Oak Harbor wins

http://www.baumspage.com/wr/sbc/2014/Brackets.htm

I found myself very disappointed today in just how much this meet has fallen. Oak Harbor did a great job of hosting but the numbers are just not there for the SBC right now. Some brackets only had three or four kids in them.

Why is this? Wrestling is growing here in Michigan. I haven't heard if any school in the past ten years cutting their wrestling program at the HS level. Olivet College DID cut their program, but due to wrestling community pressure, it was reinstated and they hosted a USA camp two summers ago. As well, Adrian College is resurrecting their D3 wrestling program closed since 1984. This stuff is cyclical, but I have seen the growth in the little over a decade my son has been involved too. Hopefully it gets back on the upswing.

Same with the Firelands Conference ... same with the Northern Ohio League, now the SBCs. All three leagues had weight classes with three or four kids in them.

But none of those have anything on the four-team Sandusky River League. St. Mary Central Catholic won the 'dual' format tournament by beating three teams. And of the 42 possible matches, SMCC only had 17 head-to-head matches. The other 25 were all forfeits or double forfeits!

Furthermore, four kids were crowned SRL champions ... AND DIDN'T WRESTLE A SINGLE MATCH.

Oak Harbor, Perkins, Clyde and Edison are holding up there end of the bargin when it comes to numbers and quality wrestling. They may have an empty weight class or two but they are fielding good numbers and quality wrestlers.

Margaretta doesn't have large numbers but they do have some quality wrestlers.

Huron and PC are really struggling right now.

This is a topic of conversation I've recently had with a few people.

My suggestion...

1. Eliminate the league tournament

OR

2. Look into creating a multiple league "confernece tournament." It probably won't ever happen but it's an idea that would create some excitement and more importantly fill brackets.

Thats the thing...

Some good programs in the SBC but it only takes one or two programs with small rosters to create multiple byes in the confernece brackets.

should be better in 2016 with the 16 teams - at least some fuller weight classes.

I don't get why numbers are so down at PC and Huron. Always have good numbers in MS.

There were two duals yesterday at the SRLs that filled THREE of the 14 weight classes. THREE. It's not going to be that big of a bump, as Vermilion wrestling is absolutely atrocious, and managed to score a whopping EIGHT points at the WSCs two weeks ago.
