I know their was a topic before but it kinda died.....

i've been using pro tools heavily over the past couple of weeks, just really basic tracking, using eq's and compressors..

what are you guys using??

i know ktc uses a br-8, knen ptools m-powered, sentr1c cubase, nomadd protools, but what about the rest of ya'll and even the ones included??

maybe we can form some sort of network, sharing ideas, not like beat making where the creative process is up to the individual, but more like mixing where its more on technique, along with a good ear..

ah man when it comes to mixing, man i'll be in there all day! really, when i mix a song, i try almost everything!. thats just me. i like to hear what options i have or what type of sound i can come up with, depending on the song and vibe of it. i don't have a certain set way of mixing really. i approach every track individually.
one piece of advice to everybody, get a good pair of monitors! this is very vital. i can't tell u how many times i'd have a new mix and sound good, then take it to the car or play it on a general audio source and it sounded crappy, or too bassy, or too cluttered, etc, etc. u could have the best pair of headphones, but u gotta remember, the general public rocks cheap headphones and stock stereo systems..... right now, i use a pair of alesis M1 active 620s. anywayz, lets hear from the rest of u.

damn im rocking a set of home surround sound speakers... need to upgrade to some event alp5's....

after i get done trying to mix down a track i take the wav and put it on my ipod and refrence it in the car, with my dj headphones, and with my ipod headphones, it really helped, cause with creeeds album, one song sounded really good on the monitors at edgars place, but when i put the album on my ipod and played it at home and on headphones, i could hear the bass was distored cause it was to overpowering for the lower end headphones/speakers... the low frequencies were kinda overpowering around the 60 frequency range..

word. monitors make all the differance in the world. when i finish a track at my home studio, getting it how i want it to sound. i play it on different sets of monitors just to make sure that my sound is consistent. i've had plenty of songs, before i had my monitors, that i play in the car and it sounds like crap.

okay, so how do u all track beats? if im lazy or short on time, i just track it stereo with it mixed on the MPC. but usually, i'll track each sound individually. then seperate to specific region, which becomes a loop (usually 4 bars). then i just duplicate the region through the song. but it gets tricky when u have change up in the beat. i usually do the whole process again when i there's a change up in the beat, and save that region. then just insert it where u want the change up to be. anywayz, hope im makin sense. okay let's hear from the rest of u.

i usually track one track at a time, depends if its a stereo or mono track, i usually record straight though and work mutes with the Volume envelope.i guess this is a bit time consuming, but i havent got down the art of copying and pasting regions....

the key is using for me is using midi, either clock or time code, to sync each track so they align perfectly...

mixing using effects on protools on each indivudual tracks, routing drum tracks though a bus to an aux track with the digi compressor, works wonders, it fattens up the drums without distorting the sound... i try not to fuck with the main sample or sound with a compressor seeing as it loses the hi and mid range sounds and you gotta use a bit of eq to correct it..

i recorded a few of my beats straight from my mpc, but it sucks when you insert effects because it screws with the entire beat and not just an individual track/sound. if you wanna boost the bass on the kick, you gotta boost the bass of the entire track, if your bass track is leveled at 0db, and you boost the bass, you'd boost the bass of the drum, but at the same time your bass sound would definately become a bit over powering and then you gotta turn down the entire track to try and correct the clipping..

still learning though, im on step 2 of 100000 in the world of pro tools.. hahahahahahaha

don't know if any of this made any sense, haha its
what i do when im "working" with pro tools....
------------------------------------------------------

to knen... im really comfortable working with version 7.0, i havent encountered any glitches/bugs, i guess after i upgrade to a newer computer, im going to have to update, seeing as 7.0 doesnt support the newer intel macs processors...

do any of you guys use an Mic Pre-Amp??? i've been talking to some folks that swear by using an external hardware based preamp, like an apogee or focusrite preamp, because it helps by using compressors and limiters when your trying to get the vocals to "Sit" right on the mix.. i've been listening to a track that i recorded with creed, and to me the vocals sound okay, but it doesnt sound like its sitting well on the track.. it sounds like its floating above the track and not on it, when i refrence it against my favorite tracks..

I use both an Apogee and a Behringer. Both tube. Sounds incredible.

I usually break everything up into individual tracks. vocals are usually bussed to an aux in for effects (i.e delays/reverb). I keep my comp and limiter on the track itself, keeping it up top of my effect's chain. I personally like to keep any thing to do with dynamics on the track itself(i.e compressors, limiters, eq's). the last thing i do is i put a plug-in on the master track to really "phatten" up the sound. you wouldn't believe the differance it makes. the plug-in i use is called master x3. here's the link.

I keep it pretty simple...

1)Basic volume Mix in the mpc.
2)Track individually into my roland cdx-1(a glorified digital 8 track recorder).
3)Use the compression/effects on the cdx-1.
4)Listen with my ipod headphones, pro audio headphones & monitors. Then adjust. Burn to cd in the cdx-1.

This is the piece.
It's got a sampler/sequencer/8-track recorder/cd burner/effects/compressors/etc.
Sounds dope right???
Well they paired all of the above with the absolute sh*ttiest saving format ever. CD-RW's. Saves like 10% of the time. So you gotta burn individual tracks to cd when recording. One time pau.
