Where on campus did they install this Central Valley United Farm Workers monument?

And how did they pick the one-time "Prune Capitol"? There haven't been blossoms below Blossom Valley Road since they ran the freeway through there in the late 1950s.

It's not diversity. It's political correctness and connections in Sacramento.

I'm all for a statue of a Greek hero. King Leonidas of Sparta!

They installed this over by the old 7th street alignment, the old cafeteria and the music building. The first and third shots Anthony posted are facing west towards the Central Class Room Building and second shot is facing east towards the Student Union.

Although I do agree, this piece is less than attractive, it does have a sense of meaning behind it and I can totally respect that (even if I'm not Mexican). I think this piece is quite fitting for the SJSU campus, given the huge amount of diversity the campus has and the large # of students on campus of Mexican heritage. I don't think any other college campus in America has quite this many races and nationalities residing in harmony so well.

i appreciate the fact that you can respect that, but i feel a monument like this really doesnt belong HERE. maybe at Fresno State, but not here.

i would appreciate a monument that has all the different countries whose ethnicities are represented on campus, and the Leonidas statue as well.

its too much pandering to my race. i would understand a monument to the missions, to the Californios, but not this.

But wouldn't this Farm Workers Union monument be even more appropriate in the central valley at Fresno State, CS Bakersfield or Sacramento State? ...or don't those towns sound Spanish enough?

The Santa Clara Valley doesn't even come close to the San Joaquin Valley in the number of farm workers employed harvesting crops today.

Maybe they think we're a "higher profile" campus?

And not one "noticeable" Spartan pride figure, gateway, statue, that means a damn thing on campus.

There is the "hidden" Spartan statue in front of the art building, but that thing does not even count in my opinion.

Those bronze statues at the stadium should be between the business tower and the student union on the grass where all the students pass by.

Talk about no one seeing those statues (besides athletes), during the 7 day week.

The main campus needs an SJSU monument to bring pride to the students.

And it appears that our new "monument" is a Cal- State University wide effort.

Fresno's peace garden with a statue of Cesar Chavez

And this is the Cesar Chavez Memorial Murial that is located at Sonoma State University .

Sixties alumnus Bruce Wolfe offered to do a special Spartan statue when Chuck Bell was antsy to duplicate something he did a Utah State. (A bull statue?) I told him about my classmate Wolfe's sculptures. Bruce promised to do something at below cost if I would help do some heavywork slinging of clay at his Piedmont studio. But Bruce, like any other sculptor, wanted to make sure the statue had a prominent place on campus. Afterall, most students attend classes in Washington Square, right?

Bruce Wolfe / Art Works Foundry

And if Bell wanted one at the South Campus, Bruce thought it might be wise to pour two bronzes and put one on the closed off portion of San Carlos where it would get both unobstructed light from both east and west.

I spoke to our A.D. and took photos on the south campus and thought a proper location would be in front of the Simpkins Athletic Center—across from the Koret Center.

We never even got around to sketching anything because Bell wanted it to be politically correct by having both a male and female Spartan. I guess he got his wish, but I still don't see a male Spartan warrior on the south campus.

Rat would probably understand the sense of humor in the Central Section CIF office, where not only are Delano and Cesar Chavez high schools are in the same league, but they play each other at the end of the year!

What a terrible idea and waste of funds.

Shows you how little pull Athletics has on campus, as they could not find a way to get the "Spartan Pride" incorporated into sucha project.

How about a Spartan logo on one side, showing students of different ethnicity backgrounds?

Yea right.....
