Hey everyone. Back in the day, Hoppy, Gene, and Roy were the on the top of the B western genre. But there were a few others that were kinda interesting to watch. As far as the others go my favorite was Buster Crabb. Basically because he had a really comfortable quality about his character and the way he interacted with fuzzy was fun to watch. So if I were to rank my favorites it would be Roy then Hoppy then Gene and Buster are kinda tied for third. So who were your "other favorites" and why? |

I don't know if I have any favorites outside of Roy and Gene but I really enjoy watching Allan Lane, Bill Elliot, John Wayne's B-westerns. |

I didn't care for Tex Ritter, but I really liked Johnny Mack Brown...I even saw him years later at a State Fair in Little Rock. His outfit was tattered and no one paid any attention to him. I felt sorry for him. I liked Crash Corrigan and really liked Lash Larue (not Whip Wilson). Liked Bill Elliot, too, but he's already been mentioned. Of the older cowboys, I liked Bob Steele (he kept acting in bit parts and minor rolls for a long time, was a regular on Wyatt Earp I believe.) Didn't care for Hoot Gibson or any of those first screen cowboys, they were too far removed from modern movie making...they were corney when I was a Kid. I saw most of these guys on TV. Back in the early 50s, Network TV was only on a few hours a week, the rest of the time was filled with old movies, so I got hooked on 42nd street and King Kong and the Range Busters long after they were out of business by watching them on TV as a kid. Watched plenty of silent movies then too. Saturday mornings were filled with silent funnies and movie serials were on every afternoon. I remember seeing Laurel and Hardy in primetime and once, they even showed Rudolph Valintino in the Shiek silent in primetime. Steve |

I liked some John Waynes. Some of them were not B-Westerns though.

Johnny Mack Brown was born about 60 miles from the town where I reside. He was born in Dothan, Alabama. |

Bob Steele, who was a major western movie star himself, was a cast member in Roy's movie,--CARSON CITY KID.

Was Bob Steele the bad guy in the Carson City Kid? |

Leah B;
Yes, Bob Steele played a saloon owner who cheated at poker, and had shot the Carson City Kid's Brother. At first he hired Roy to be bouncer at his saloon, but then at the end The Carson City Kid (Roy), found out that it was Steele who had shot his Brother and had a showdown with him and shot him. So, he did play a "bad-guy" in this one.
Pauline Moore was the leading-lady, and at the end, when she leaves with C.C.K., Gabby gives her a goodbye kiss!! NOW THERE'S something you don't ever see Gabby do before. Usually he is at odds with all of the women in Roy's movie's.

I thought that kiss was strange as well. Gabby never said anything about 'wimin' though he did leave the window when Roy started singing a 'love' song. Thanks Durango Kid! |

If you've ever wondered what The Lone Ranger, (Clayton Moore), looked like WITHOUT the mask, get Roy's movie THE FAR FRONTIER. Clayton plays a border patrol, and gets knocked in the head and loses his memory, and Roy gets in a fight with Clayton and "knocks" the memory back into him.
Some other good films of Clayton Moore without the mask, before his days as The Lone Ranger, can be seen in the "cliff-hanger serials" films of, NYOKA, AND THE TIGERMEN.

Yeah Clayton Moore shows up a lot in bit roles before the Lone Ranger. He was a reporter in Helldorado, and a bad guy in a couple of Gene's movies. |

Saturday morning serials chapters 1 through 15,
Fly paper, penny loafers, Lucky Strike Green.
Flat tops, sock hops, Studebaker, Pepsi Please,
Ahh, do you remember these?
Cigar Bands, on your hand, your daddy's socks rolled down.
Sticks, snow floats and aviator caps with flaps that button down.
Movie stars on Dixie Cup tops, and knickers to your knees,
Ahh, do you remember these?
The Hit Parade, grape Tru-Aid, The Sadie Hawkins Dance,
Pedal pushers, duck tail hair and peggin' your pants.
Howdie-Doodie, Tutti-Frutti, the seam up the back of her hose,
Ahh, do you remember those?
James Dean, he was keen, Sunday movies were taboo,
The Senior Prom, Judy's mom, Rock-n-Roll was new.
Cracker Jack prize, stars in your eyes, as Daddy tore the keys,
Ahh, do you remember these?
The boogey man, lemonade stands, takin' your tonsils out,
Hindenburg, -n- wait your turn, and 4 foul balls you're out.
Cigarette loads, -n- secret codes, -n- savin' lucky stars,
Can you remember back that far?
The boat neck shirts, and fender skirts and crinoline petticoats,
Mum's the word, and a dirty bird and a double root beer float.
Moon hub caps, and loud heel taps, and he's a real gone cat.
Ahh, do you remember that?
Dancin' close, little moron jokes, and cooties in her hair,
Captain Midnight, Ovaltine, and The Whip at the County Fair.
Charles Atlas Course, Roy Roger's Horse, and "only The Shadow knows"
Ahh, do you remember those?
Gable's charm, Frog in your arm, loud mufflers, pitchin' woo,
Going steady, Veronica and Betty, white bucks, and "Blue Suede Shoes"
Knock Knock jokes, and "Who's there?", Dewey, Dewey who?;
Do we, do we remember these? Yes, we do, Ahh do we do we remember these?

Have you ever heard the Statler's Bros albums doin' their "Hillbilly" group, "RoadHog & the ??". Can't remember the rest. My friends had 2 or 3 albums with them as this humorous group. When the Statler's had their show on television, once in awhile they'd dress up as them and perform a song or two. I enjoyed that! I liked them all, but my favorite was Harold, he was so funny!
This is one group I miss bein' together!! I did see them back in 1967 or 1968 in Springfield, MO; when they were backup to "June & Johnny Cash". They had just got on the charts with "<i>Bed of Roses"</i> and "<i>Flowers on the Wall"</i> was out.</b> |

The Very Best of the Statler Brothers. ( two LP set).
Statler Brothers- Bed of Roses.
Statler Brothers, Country Music- Then and Now. Are the three that we have. This one has a picture of their hillbilly group on the jacket, but nothing else.
Yes, I recall their TV show they had. We remember watching it at the time, but have no detail recollection from the show.

I'm kinda partial to Monte Hale as well, but am still trying to find the movie that his "shoot low, they might be crawlin'" line comes from.
I also enjoy seeing Clayton Moore unmasked. My favorites for him are "Radar Men From the Moon" and "Riders of the Whistlin' Pines" |
