Years ago we lived in the peaceful farming township of Oakley in the country. Not much to do there but everybody knew you. This was where I saw Roy Rogers, Trigger and Dale Evans for the first time on our small b/w television and I'll never forget it. I was hooked!

Do you remember where you were when you saw Roy Rogers on Television for the first time?

Brenda Castilla We lived on a several thousand acre farm as I grew up...it was in pines and a couple fish ponds...anyway, we got the first TV set in that part of the world and on the week-ends, everyone in the area came to watch TV. Somewhere during those first days of having a TV, I found RR movies and then TV Show. I fell in love immediately with TV but in particular, RR and later on, DE.

Durango Kid My parents got their first television in 1952, so it had to be about that year when I discovered The Roy Rogers Show and it became my favorite. The show was on Saturday mourning at 9:30am in our area.
We now live 5 miles away from my parents old dairy farm in central WI where we spent our first fourty years and first saw the show.

Brenda Castilla This topic brings back so many memories of childhood.
D. Kid...We must have gotten our TV's at about same time frame.
Then, when I was around 11 or 12, we got the color TV but back then, anything in color was few and far between and many times stations were not that clear even with a tall antenna. We could only get 3 channels with the first TV set for a few years; a NBC station out of Montgomery (still on today) and a station from Dothan (remains with us) and some city from along the beach area...possibly Mobile. Within a few years, the channels grew and variety of programming grew. In those days, all programs were Family oriented!...even the commercials were very cute most of the time.

Durango Kid Brenda;

I still remember that first TV. It was a 21" RCA , of course, black and white. Only two channels at first out of Green Bay, and then in 1955 a third channel out of same city. The first color TV was gotten in 1964. My Mom's favorite programs were "The Honeymooners", and "I love Lucy". My Dad's favorite was "Gunsmoke".

You KNOW what my favorite was. :)

yellowrose13 I first saw The Roy Rogers Show when I was around 6 -about 1998(I believe). I liked it right off(my dad especially liked watching it with me) but the station took it off before I could get to where I really loved it. A while later(only about 3 years ago) I fell in love with Bonanza. So when I found "some cowboy movie" in our closet I egearly popped it in. It was Bells of Rosarita. And so began my love with RR and Dale and Gabby and Trigger and the Pioneers. Unfortunately am 13 now and can hardly remember those first shows.

stevelafevers We got a TV in 1951. I don't know what year I'm remembering, but we lived in Oakland California and we could just barely get the Stockton, CA station on our outdoor antenna. Roy Rogers Theater was on at the time showing the theatrical films. My dad and I watched them regularly together. He loved Roy too. Steve

Brenda Castilla Thinking back to the days when the stations were not too clear and some quite "snowy", technology has come a long way!

BifFan My Dad bought us a used 17' TV in 1957. I was 9 yrs. old and discovered Roy's show on Sat. morning, along with Fury, Sky King, Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, and My Friend Flicka. I simply loved those shows and wouldn't miss them for anything. The picture rolled alot and after coming in from working on his car to fix picture, my Dad showed me how to do it. I became quite adept at fixing the rolling. I also remember wrapping ribbon wire with aluminum foil trying to get a better quality picture.
No cable or dishes in those days! That old leaning antenna or rabbit ears were all we had. What a pleasure to watch TV in those days.
No worry over language, sex, drugs, or other unwatchable content.. I truly miss those peaceful times of the 50's and often long for them.

SStacey Me, too BifFAN. I watched all those shows, too. I absolutely loved Sky King. I loved the sound of the Songbird. Oh how I wish some programmer would come up with a channel with all those old shows on it.

Mamacita I grew up as an MK in Quito, Ecuador. On weekends or when we had parties, in the early to mid-60's our parents would rent Roy rogers films for us to watch. Of course they had been dubbed so I always saw Roy Rogers and everyone speaking Spanish!

Sky King was one of my favorites too.. I don't know if you know this or not Shelia, but some of Sky King was filmed in Apple Valley where they used the old Apple Valley Air strip in their footage..

Here is an interesting Sky King web site..

Sheila Reiboldt Here is a link in which the old Apple Valley Airport is disccused - it has a little bit of information on Skiy King too...

In this piece the writer tells about visiting the area and the Apple Valley Inn in 2001-03 - and mentions how bad shape it is in - I just want to be sure everyone knows the AV Inn has been restored and re-opened - it has been saved - Thank Goodness - it is an extremely important part of Apple Valley History..

twilight Well the first Roy Rogers TV episode I saw was on a DVD. The first movie I saw him in was "The Old Corral". After that I just started buying a bunch of Gene's and Roy's movies. But the other day I was really happy. I found the first B western I had ever seen. I saw it on TV back in the late 80's or early 90's. I had just seen a little piece of it before I had to take off. But that little piece stuck with me and I loved it. And thats what had made me go look for those other movies. And led to this addiction of mine. I didn't remember the name of it at the time. But about a week ago I found it again. It was "Down Mexico Way" by Gene Autry.

stevelafevers Remember Ken Maynard and his horse Tarzan? We used to watch his movies on TV when we couldn't find Roy or the snowy picture from Stockton was just too bad to watch that channel. I remember Kenel Ration dog food sponsored those shows.

Painted Pony Oh how well I recall those old televisions, small and sometimes snowy reception, but it was better than no TV set. Those were the Good Old Days! :) We've really came a long way since then haven't we?

Brenda Castilla Yes, Painted Pony, we have come a LONG way in most every area ...from TV's to health care to transportation per huge aircraft/better train systems/huge pleasure ships, to clothes(styles), games children play, vehicles we drive, use of credit/debit cards, trends school systems now take...and on and on. How life has changed...some areas for the better and some, debatable!

CowboyFan The first TV show from the Roy Rogers Show I saw was on a DVD. I got it from Wal-Mart with a whole bunch of other western shows (like the Lone Ranger, the Cisco Kid, Bonanza). It was pretty good. The first RR movie I saw was on a DVD too, Under California Stars. Unfortunately, I wasn't around when the show was actually on TV.

bd18packer I, like many children of the 50's, remember watching Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and their TV show. While I don't remember the first time I saw Roy, I remember the many movies of theirs and always remember fondly the many worthwhile lessons learned from watching Roy and Dale. I wore a white cowboy hat, a Stetson, for many years in my childhood, and finally retired it when I was a teenager, after wearing it in an community theater stage production (not high school) in tribute to a scene from "Oklahoma!". I wore this white Stetson with fond memories, of Roy, Dale and the gang, and only retired it because it no longer fit, either my head or my image as a teenager in the 70's. The values and respect I learned as a child, from watching Roy and Dale, remain with me to this day. I remember watching Dale and her guests on a Christian televison show, as an adult, and loved to hear about their days together in the movies, on television, and in personal appearences. I was very sad, and grief stricken, when the good Lord took Roy and Dale from us, not so long ago. I thought it was very dark day when items from their museum in California were auctioned off. I am glad to see that Roy Jr. can still share the memories with us, and their is a museum all of us can visit, in Branson, Missouri.
Thank you, God Bless you and keep up the good work.
