mike9158 Hi all,

Itsmebobd, I always used to refrigerate my take homes, though I don't know if you really have to. There's not much chance of them getting moldy or contaminated since you probably won't have more than a week's worth, but just the same, I'd keep them refrigerated if at all possible.

And about your room mate, PLEASE be careful in that regard. I don't mean to sound like a know it all, but methadone is a STRONG narcotic medication and people who do not have a built up tolerance for narcotics can overdose from it very easily. Especially if there are other narcotic or diazepam type drugs around and being used. But even by itself, for a person inexperienced with narcotics, it can happen very easily.
It's these kind of accidents and incidents that get publicized and spread all over the media that makes HARMD and other groups want to ban "take homes".

Just a quick story: early on in my methadone program, in about 1999, I was at 95mg a day with "take homes" and my wife at the time had a real bad toothache. We were broke as usual and couldn't get her to the dentist right then and had no money to go hunting pain pills. So I let her have "just a sip" of one of my "take homes". She shook the bottle up, took a small sip and an hour later was sick as a dog. She vomited and ended up sleeping (a very restless sleep) for hours that evening and basically scared the shit out of me. And then my dumb ass went in to my clinic and told my counselor what I did. I lost my take homes for 30 days and got a warning that I would be detoxed immediately if I ever did that again. And I swear, my intentions were strictly good. I believe the clinic staff knew my intentions were good too, but still, they were big time pissed.

Be careful. Take care.

TruHuSKa They just need to be kept between 65-77 degrees F. They should be fine at room temp... at a temp u'd be comfy in. Some people prefer to refridgerate if they have longer than a week's worth or two to take home... but they should be okay otherwise.

sonico Hi itsmebobd,

I have to support Mike on his reflection on keeping methadone in a safe place. Can you get a lock-box as has been advised to me many a time from other regulars on the forums. At least keep it out of sight and harms way. What is the deal with your room mate I know your not want anything to happen yo him though is he going to listen to you if you tell him the risks he he drank your methadone. If I shared my flat with another person I would be exactly the same, though I think all you can do as a responsible adult is tell him this stuff will put you 6ft under if you drink it! Also, I am in the UK but sure the methadone is the same as over in the States and I have my own hiding place for my Sunday Take-Hone, and it is not refrigerated and does the job just fine.

Rose Mactier Hi itsmebobd-
Welcome to Methadone Support Forum. If I were you I would not worry so much about keeping the methadone refrigerated, I would be more worried about keeping it locked or hidden!! If you are concerned about possible theft, then you need to hide your takehomes well. Even if you put them in a lock box, that can be stolen and broken into. You need to hide them as well. About refrigeration, I get two weekks of takehomes, that is the max allowed at my clinic, and I do not keep them in the refrigerator. I have had no problems with the methadone and I have been doing this a long time. Take care and hide the methadone well!!!

taperingfrom140 As far as I know, there's no NEED to refrigerate them, but it can't hurt. I would keep them in a lockbox that is hidden and not in a refrigerator due to security purposes. I think that that would be the wisest thing to do.

Steener122 I have never had to put mine in the fridge, but I only get one days worth of take homes right now, but PLEASE make sure your roommate doesn't steal your dose. A friend of mine from the clinic had his son steal 2 of his take homes and die, not only did he lose his son but he got charged with his death, he almost got manslaughter, eventually they dropped it to delivery of a synthetic narcotic, because they couldn't prove if he sold it or the son stole it but he didn't keep it hidden enough or some such bullshit. I'm not sure buit be careful please.

TruHuSKa Wow, that's crazy. I mean, yeah, he should have had it locked up and in a secure place... but what if someone wanted to get through the security lock box or bag... if they did, and died from it, it just sucks that the person whom it was prescribed for would be to blame for it. Ya know? That's just kinda crazy! But then again, it is our responsibility.

Anywhoo, I hope that you are able to keep it secure and away from your roomie... that sucks that he/she would steal it from you. Try to lock it up and hide it as best you can

Anejill10 I never heard of having to keep your Methadone in the fridge.
What about buying (if you can) a safe for your bedroom. They have safes that are digital and key entry and are about as big as maybe 2 shoes boxes side by side? Maybe a little smaller, but this safe can be put in the back of your closet or under your bed and your bedroom door locked. I mean in addition to the lock box you would take to the clinic. That box is usually not the most secure box w/ respect to someone busting into it. I hope your room mate wouldn't do that and would respect your recovery. But I don't know what their situation is . If he/she is an addict then, well you definately will want to do everything you can to keep it locked away and when you do have it ..never mention that you do.

dal33 Some people do but it really isn't necessary. Did you just start MMT? I read where it says "1st day of treatment Aug. 24th 2009". I ask only because I never have heard of anyone getting THs the 1st week, except in parts of New Mexico. It's no big deal, but I am curious! But it is definitely important to keep any meds (methadone) hidden & locked up! If anyone gets hold of your meds, there are all kinds of serious consequences, for you & whoever gets ahold of them! Good luck with it all, let us know how your 1st day goes, if I'm reading that right!??! take care
