Topie: Wafers vs. Liquid
April 12th, 2008 06:10 PM
Skip Hey Family:
Question, For the past 6 years now I have been use to taking the liquid methadone. Due to intense pain issues in my feet, knee and now up my back,I got into my takehomes but thank God I was able to obtain a few wafers from a friend.
When I took the wafers it was almost like adding an extra 50 mgs to my daily dose. Honestly for a few days there I was a little loopy,LOL. So I am wondering, do most of you take the wafers or do most of you take the liquid.

I have noticed that in the past, our liquid was a deep red and now its on the pink side. And it does not seem to hold me like it use to. I split dose anyways and I usually take 3/4 of my bottle in the morning and about 4 hrs later I take the other 1/4.But now it seems after 2-3 hrs I can feel the wee-jee-wee-jee's kicking in. I think you all know what I am talking about when I say the wee-jee's,LOL. This seems to hold me till only around 2pm and then they start in again. Is it meeee??
Already I am at 240mg split and I do not want to go up anymore but on the other hand if I have to do then I will.
But before I ask for an increase I think I am going to ask to try the wafers.
So any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Markm Skip I cant help you with the wafers vs liquid question, however, I received in pill form both Methadone and Methadose (Generic?) The Methadone seemed to hold me a lot longer than the dose did. I have heard others complaining regarding the strength of the current liquid but dont have any first hand knowledge. I am sure others will be here shortly with all the right answers.

Maggie I have no clue what a wafer is, but Im assuming its the tablet form? I personally find the liquid better.. but i doubt there's a huge difference, its prolly six and half a dozen.

And red liquid? lol its always dark green here and tastes quite nice.. unless its sugar free, then its a bit bland. I take it you don't have any problems with people shooting the tablets up over there? they are very strict here about the tablet form, because of that problem.

mike9158 Hi everyone,

We used to have both the liquid methadone and the liquid "methadose" at my clinic, and truthfully, I never really noticed a big difference. As far as the color goes, our liquid was either mixed with cherry kool-aid or orange kool-aid, therfore, we never knew if it would be red or orange.
Now my clinic uses the 40mg wafers. Maggie, a wafer is a large orange soft tablet that is "scored" so it can easily be broken in half or even in quarters. For instance, I am currenly on a dose of 17.5mg, so the nurse takes one 40mg wafer and breaks it in "quarters"...which of course is 10mg. She then adds one 5mg white pill and breaks a second 5mg white pill in half to get the additional 2.5 mg. She then mixes them together, adds hot water...and I get to drink a really crappy tasting

In a way, I wish we could go back to using the liquid methadone because then I could drop one milligram at a time instead of 2.5mg at a time like I'm doing now. The lower my dose gets, the more I am feeling those 2.5mg "drops" I'm trying to go very slow...only dropping 2.5mg a month.

Anyway, I hope everyone is having a good weekend. Take good care.

kei I have taken the oragne wafers and the white one "methadose" before I got in the clinic since I've been their I'm on the clear liquid. If I had the white one the orange was better and vice versa..........I think it was my addictive thinking

Skip Green liquid Maggie? Thats a new one for me. Where are you at?
April 14th, 2008 12:06 AM
Galilaya WE have red liquid at my clinic but used to have the wafers. they mixed water with the wafers ( a measured amount ) to dose us from 1 - 10 and used a syringe to pull the appropiate amount so they could measure 1 ml at a time or whatever increment.
I had left for a while and when i came back they were using the liquid. not to long ago i was late to the clinic and was refused my dose so i got a wafer from my brother and i did notice a difference. I dont think it was in my head because i wasn't expecting to notice a difference or even thinking about it. It certainly did seem to hold me better.

sonico I am in the UK, Scotland and as far as I know what we get is green liquid. The name for this on the street when sold illegally just happens to be called, green. Never seen it over hear in any other form or colour. Anyway, what I was wondering was about the way you are taking you dose splitting it as I have not heard of this either though I am not suggesting you change it either as I am not qualified in such matters. Just wandering if this is how you are prescribed to take it by your doctor is all and if the splitting it is why its not holding you as well as it should?
April 14th, 2008 07:22 AM
misskrystalx I was wondering the same thing. The other clinic used the red liquid, and this one is the white wafers. A friend told me that the wafers were better, but you know how that goes, a lot of people just like to say that, I think, lol. The wafers are nastier to taste, thought. My clinic gives them in HOT water at the window, in orange koolaid in takehomes.

I can't tell any difference between the liquid and the wafers yet, but I still loopy, not even at half my reg. dose.
April 14th, 2008 07:57 AM
murph ok, we have gone over all the colors (mine is orange by the way :) ) but haven't heard if anyone has noticed any difference. I am very curious about this too.
April 14th, 2008 07:58 AM
Melissa Wann Okay...just gotta put my 2 cents worth in here, LOL. BTW...HEY EVERYONE!!!!

I have really missed every one, I have just been soooo super busy working with the MA part of MSO. Don't get me wrong, I love it...but I miss being able to come up here to the Methadone Discussion part of the forum and be able to say Hi to all of my dear friends.

So...where was I...Oh- My 2 cents worth, eh?

Okay, check it my clinic we have the light yellowish color liquid. It is called Methadone HCI. Now, I went to a private clinic for a while a long time ago, and we had the red Methadose liquid. I actually had to come down 10mgs when I changed clinics and started taking the red Methadose. So...I am back at my clinic that has the yellow Methadone HCI liquid, and they have always offered wafers too. Although I have never seen an orange wafer...We have the big huge white wafers, which come in the 40mgs tabs. Now these wafers are 2 dollars MORE PER DAILY DOSE. I have tried them and was taking them for quite some time, but switched back to liquid because it did , at first, seem to braely make my Methadone saty in my system lnger so In didn't feel sick teh next moring....but it didn't work wonders or anything. And it was nasty to drin mixed with water. Arghhhhhh! Gross! Taking a wafer with water is like drining chalk, right?

So, anyway, I tried the wafers again, because I am on a split dosage now, because my Methadone doesn't last like it should at all. MY Metabolism messes all of that up. Some kind of Thyroid problem or something...the doc's haven't figured it out yet, but I think they are getting better at finding out what is up with my metabolism being so weird, Thank Goodness...because my dose is so different on different days that sometime I will just b totally sick for 2 - 3 weeks, and then I will feel a bit' tired for the next week or so??? Maybe from the Methadone, maybe from not sleeping? I don't know?!

Now, I have heard of the green Methadone. And I i have to say I think it is up surd that they would make it green or blue or , even red, really. because I worry about children wanting to drink their parents Methadone. I know if you educate them wisely and keep it locked up like you should, you should be okay. But on the safe side...Why do they make it green? BTW...What is the actual name of this Green machine stuff, LOL?
I mean, kids just like green things to eat and drink, yanno? Green eggs and ham? Stuff like that grabs their attention. But, hey The red does too, and its kinda cherry flavored.

I will just stick with my regular colored Methadone liquid, LOL. What I don't like about hearing some of your that he has no choice between liquid and tabs...and when tapering, every 1 mg helps. Is there not another clinic around Mike that does liquid too?

Lotsa Luv to ya all....I miss you guys...but I gotta run.....Doctors appt this morning! Please, Wish me luck!

Melissa Wann Oh, and I totally agree with Murph...I think we have gone over all the colors now, LOL. And....not to much surprise...they all seem to work about the same way for everyone. They keep us alive and clean one day at a time, yanno? Methadone SAVE LIVES!!!

I just wanted to add that we say a prayer or think of Carol and her mom right her mom is once again very ill. She is out of teh hospital now, but still pretty darn sick. So...if you haven't thought about them yet today. This is a good time to do that. Thanks guys!

Oh..and while saying a prayer for Carol's mom...we should say one for Debs sister too! She has just recently started Chemo for ovarian cancer and the Doc' didn't give her very long to live. Just a few years or so. So, prayers for them both, that is, if you pray, okay?
Your Sis.........~Mel

mike9158 Hi all,

Mel, as usual, there you are keeping us posted on some really personal issues with our are a SUPER person my friend. And of course, my thoughts and prayers go out to all my friends and "family" here, especially our wonderful "Queen", Carol, and her mother. have come to mean so much to so many of us here because you created this wonderful place where we can come and be together with others like us. I know I can speak for a whole bunch of your friends when I tell you that you are a very loved person. And you and your mother are definitely in our prayers.

And have become such an important part of our "family" here. You are always there for others and your kindness and compassion is truly a gift. Please know that your sister is in my prayers as well.

Mel, what was the link for lighting the prayer candles again? If someone could post that, I would be honored to light a candle for Carol's mom, for Deb's sister and also for Dr. Marc, who we can never forget.

Take care all,

I'm in Scotland Skip, I just assumed all methadone liquid was green lol

Thanks for the info Mike, and I agree, the wafers don't sound too nice.. glad we don't have to take them here.

It is a huge worry about kids drinking the green liquid as it does taste and look nice, its very sugary, which all kids love. There was an incident in Glasgow where a wee tot died from drinking methadone, but that's the only one I know of, thank god.. her mother was jailed, because it was bought illegally. The bottles do have safty caps, but any child over the age of 5 could open them, I store my bottles way up out of reach of little fingers, but it is a worry.
April 15th, 2008 06:24 PM
Melissa Wann To Mike and everyone....I will look for the candle lighting thing and put it in a new topic here at Methadone Discussion, okay? The name of the group will just be MSO, and whenever someone is thinking of someone with MSO family that is sick, or suffering from this disease being active again, we can go and light a candle. Just remember, that the candle burns down until its totally out within, I think, 72 hours? I am not quite sure. It may be 48 hours? Lotsa Luv everyone.........Your Sis....~Mel

Oh...and Skip,....this has me worried ever since I read about the green liquid ebcause of the children, because the red - cherry flavored Liquid always worried me a bit too. So, it makes me want to ask you.....Do you guys in Scotland, have the same law that we do here in the states, well most states....Do you have to lock your Methadone up in a locked box before leaving your clinic with it, and when you return to the clinic must you ahve all t/h bottles with you to be thrown away? If so, do they watch you to make sure you are locking your boxes at the dosing window, or pharmacy's (wherever you pick up your Methadone?)?( Florida definitely has had this rule for about 8 years now, when I first got on MMT(OTP's) we didn't have this law at all)

It is sooo much safe for the kids this way, especially if your Liquid is sweet tasting and green! I worry about my lock box when I go t stay for the weekend with my 2 nephews and my niece, all under the age 8 and older than 3. They are at that age, like, asking me why I have to take so much medicine all of the time, and asking what it taste like, LOL. I of course, tell them it taste horrible! And they cant ever drink even a sip of it because it kills kids, and adults if not taken the right way! But, even with a locked box on top of the refrigerator with their old lunch boxes and stuff laying over the top of my box hiding it....or something over it to hide the box (I am a bit paranoid when it comes to them getting into my meds, eh? LOL)...I still do worry about them getting into it.

Not so much anymore because this new lock box I cannot even break into. I have tried before because I lost the key once, LOL...and so my mother and I, both had all these tools; needle- nose- pliers and screw drivers, etc...and we had to literally break the box in 3 pieces to open it, LOL. SO, I went and ordered another one just like it from the store I found it at. (It was made for CD's for your car, and has a really good lock and key to it...but man this thing is impossible to open without the correct key. I even tried all these different lock box keys, and luggage keys,,etc...It had to be broken open with strength, and a lot of digging at t too, in order to finally open for me, LOL.

Anyway, so do you guys ave to have lock boxes for your Kool-Aid looking Methadone? LOL? I wonder if Ireland has the green stuff too? Just Kidding....LOL.

Talk to you guys later. Your Friend & Sis in recovery..........~Melissa

Maggie I've never heard of that law and we certainly don't have it here, or have lock boxes, but what a great idea! because lets face it, kids are tricky and like to climb and explore... were a bit behind the times here, lock boxes will probably hit the UK in 3 years time lol

We don't have clinics like you guys, our clinics are just for meeting with our drug workers, no methadone is given out there, we use the pharmacy, the clinic sends our prescription with how much we get and they make it up and give it out, but its just a normal pharmacy, its not just for methadone. Some people have to go in a side room and drink it, others get take homes.

Its not the best set up because if your on methadone in my town, everyone knows it, your neighbours, family friends, ect, can be at the pharmacy picking up their meds or just buying something like cough medicine, and everyone knows if you go in that side room, your getting methadone. I get take homes now, but I still pick it up every three days, as that's the most they will allow you to take home, but we all get a pharmacy close by, the Pharmacy I use is a 10 min walk from my home, that's the good thing about living in a small town lol I've heard some people on here saying they drive 3 hours to their clinic!

But as i said, apart from that case i spoke about in my above post, you never hear of little kids drinking methadone here, we have very few methadone related deaths.. but that law sounds great, because you can never be too careful.

Skip Hey Family,
Yea, here in Fla. we have a rule that you must return with all empty bottles and if your short then they really come down on you hard. I guess it might help some with diversion. And yes you have to have a lockbox. What irks me though is some patients come in with these cheap makeup boxes that are clear. And if you wanted to get into one of these all you would have to do is stomp on it and it would shatter. That is not what I would consider a lockbox. But it all boils down to personal responsibility. And especially if you have children.
And I still say the wafers are better than the red liquid. But it may all be in my head. The ole placebo effect. Its amazing how strong the mind-body connection is.
April 20th, 2008 11:52 AM
mike9158 Hey everyone,

Hi Skip, good to see you. Our clinics in Kentucky are the same way. We have to bring our old bottles in to get our new takes homes. The one area the clinic is very lax in is the "lock box" thing. Just about any type of container gets by as a "lock box". Like me, I bought mine at a local Walmart and it does have a lock and key, but let's face it, it wouldn't be hard to break into if anyone tried. Luckily for me, my children are all grown so that it isn't a concern in my home.

My clinic uses the wafers, but like I said earlier, even when they were using liquid, I don't think I ever really noticed a difference.

Take care all,

April 20th, 2008 06:09 PM
Skip Same here Mike- I see some patients come in with these plastic makeup boxes that are clear no less, and all it would take to open one is to stomp on it,LOL. Honestly I think lockboxes are a joke, I mean is it supposed to protect you from the clinic to the car, especially the clear ones ? Oh well, just another silly rule to abide by,eh?
April 20th, 2008 10:11 PM
zenith Another thing that is different in the UK is the dilution of the drug--there they use a 1mg to 1 ml formulation--here in the US it is 10mg to 1ml. So, if your dose is 200mg in the UK you would have to drink 200ml's of liquid. Maybe THAT is why they are so bad about underdosing patients in the UK, lol!
April 21st, 2008 04:25 AM
Maggie Yeah, that's correct Zenith, I didn't realize it was 10mg to 1ml in the US, which sounds a lot better, as i said, were behind the times here lol
April 21st, 2008 12:35 PM
mike9158 Hi all, all might be "behind the times"...but when you look at your country's stand on medical care...WE are behind the times. Medical bills here in the U.S.A. have "broke" a lot of families. And there are a whole bunch of people who go without medicines they need and trips to the doctor because they just can't afford them. Everything has gotten visits, hospital costs, pharmacy and prescription name it. If you get put in the hospital, every pill they give you...even an aspirin...costs about $10.00...and that is not an exaggeration.
I know this is a little "off topic"...but I guess every country as it's good things and bad things. Despite our medical woes, I am grateful that we have access to programs like our methadone clinics and rehab centers. As strict and unreasonable as they can be sometimes, they have saved a lot of lives.

Take care all,
