Topie: Roy Oswalt asks for a trade

pbwolverine Just curious, anyone think we have a chance at landing Oswalt?

Here's my reasoning:

One, we have some prospects that seem to have an uphill battle for PT. Boesch - Jackson combo as rookies in the outfield and Cabrera firmly at 1B leaves Strieby in a little bit of a conundrum. I'm not saying he could not have a spot post-Damon & Ordonez, but with Maggs playing the way he is we have one more year with him and who knows about Damon. Thus, Strieby could be a choice, especially since we have guys like Avisail Garcia and Wilkin Ramirez along with Clete Thomas, Ryan Raburn, and Casper Wells. We could also send someone like Iorg, Ciriaco, or Dlugach in the deal. Throw in a pitching prospect not named Crosby, Turner, or Oliver and possibly a mid-level prospect and we could possibly have a deal. For example: Strieby, Gustavo Nunez, Charles Forbush, and Figaro may be enticing. Who knows? It would be worth a shot.

Two, we are definitely a contender and Oswalt would upgrade our rotation, even though Willis has been somewhat solid and Galarraga and Bonderman seem to be shaping back up. Galarraga could even be enticing in a trade.

Three, we've dealt with the Astros before. I know it has been awhile, but they seem to be a team we like to deal with.

Thoughts? I know I'm probably just dreaming, but it was worth asking the question.

rings I'd hesitate to give up on our middle infielders yet, nor Galarraga at this point (keeping in mind that Damon, Guillen, Everett, Inge, Bonderman, G-Tubby, etc. are all off the books next year), but acquiring Oswalt would solve a big issue for us THIS year.

yeah... he hasnt been...

Oh and on Roy Oswalt the Astros are going to ask for the moon... Theyll probably want Porcello, Crosby and Turner.. and wont listen to anything less from us.

I dunno...the market is not huge for a rental, especially a guy who is good, but not dominant. Use Washburn as an example last year...dude was top 3 ERA in the league and the price wasn't too steep (even though he sucked after the trade).

TigersRoarin84 If the price was right, not a bad idea. Not sure the price would be right though.

I agree. If the price is reasonable, I don't see why we would not go for it for two years of Oswalt. Look at the Cabrera trade - we mortgaged the farm for that trade, and have we regretted it? Absolutely not. Maybin will be a fine player for a long time, but we're not even missing him at this point.

pbwolverine I am not saying that Oswalt is of Cabrera's magnitude, but the trade could be a fantastic one for us.

He will? Every time I've seen him play this year he's been terrible. Lots of strikeouts, and the play where he let a ball drop right in front of him that he could have caught.

Yes, I believe he'll be a fine player. I'm not sure I'd say great or superstar, but I believe he'll be a productive starter for quite some time. He's still young. Even Justin Upton is struggling a little more than he did last year. He'll come around.

Will he be a superstar? I don't think so. Then again, who really knows? This is his first full year in the bigs, let's see how he is doing a year or two from now. Then, we can see if or how much I'm wrong.

Fair enough.
