Topie: Cabrera finishes fourth in MVP voting

TigersRoarin84 Just saw this on ESPN. He received a first place vote from a Seattle writer. I was surprised by that, but not surprised at his Top 5. Even if I think JV was this team's MVP, pitchers rarely get support in MVP voting. I was happy to see it was him who broke up Mauer's unanimous decision.

rings I disagree.
A first-place vote for Cabrera was an embarrassment after the events of the season's last week.
How can anyone call him "most valuable" after what he did?

That particular voter was obviously only looking at stats or had his mind made up ahead of time. Mauer deserved to win.

Weso Well, now we know who took Miguel home that night after binge drinking. Anyway...this does not surprise me one bit. As long as you leave voting up to people who have never played, coached or managed the game...you will have these assinine one off votes. Buster Olney said it is destroying his credibility as a voter. I say...what credibility do you speak of? I am 35 years old and as long as I can remember...the voters have NEVER had any credibility! These "Voters" are the same people that didn't vote for Ripken, Henderson, Seaver...etc for HOF 1st ballot! You have a couple of voters who get drunk with their power wanting to make a statement and something like this happens. It is a complete joke. A joke that I am tired of laughing at.

While acknowledging your point - and adding 1987, the ridiculous election of guys like Ozzie Smith and Gary Carter to the Hall of Fame, or Mike Ohara's MVP vote for Michael Vick in '04 over Payton Manning's 48 TD - let me also say that coaches and players are no better as they often vote for friends and reputation, as much as the media does (witness the coaches' poll awarding Tom Osborne a National Championship in '97).
There's never a perfect system for this stuff.
As TR84 says, at least the right guy won.

Weso I agree that friends take care of friends. Having said that...

I feel that I am a pretty good golfer. My mom agrees 100%.

I feel that I am a pretty good golfer. Fred Couples agrees 100%.

Which one holds more weight?
