guavafish Love it or hate it? Does it serve a purpose for cheap work clothes and last minute going out essentials?

Does it show the madness of prices that other high street stores charge?

Or is it your idea of hell?

cityofangels Hi Guava!
We're the first posters in here- wonder if there's a prize!?

I don't mind Primark, though I rarely shop there to be honest. I bought some knickers in there and they were most uncomfortable!

Peter Don't exactly like it - but it serves a purpose.
September 12th, 2007 02:53 PM
cityofangels Have you shopped in there Peter?

wuzysong LOVE primark, dont see the point in spending a fortune on something that will be out of fashion next year or that i wear for work.

its great for kids clothes too, they grow too bloody fast to spend a lot!

i have been known to take 2 hours in the metrocentre one!!!

Rabbitrabbit My daughter loves it but I worry about the ethics. To get clothes that cheap they must be using child labour, surely, or paying very low wages.
September 12th, 2007 03:21 PM
juliew not especially, have bought a few things there, not keen on the quality, if I want cheap clothes I go to asda as it is close to my work. :)
September 12th, 2007 03:21 PM
cityofangels the one in Hartlepool is like a flamin' jumble sale, stuff laid on the floor and all - I can never really be bothered to rummage my way through it all. But you;re right Wuze- its ace for work stuff

know what you mean debs, it is not a well kept store, metro is best!

re: the ethics, the kit is made in india and women are paid like 5p an hour to make em, but tesco and asda are not without ethics issues!!

personally, being a busy, working, single mam... i tend to have to throw a lot of clothes out because i end up ruining them, I'd die if i spilled curry down a £50 teeshirt!!
September 12th, 2007 03:59 PM
guavafish Nike and your bigger stores have also come under the ethical microscope. But are the bigger stores any better for charging low wages and marking the goods up even more.

Good point about the kids clothes Wuzy....

WellManicuredWoman I poped into our local one a few months back, its seemed good but didn't have time to look properly though.

Yes I have (sorry about the delay in responding - board playing up!). I tend to get most of my clothes from charity shops, but there are certain things that I would never buy second hand ;)

Peter Any underwear.

Also socks and shoes.
September 13th, 2007 04:27 AM
actionman1972 I have bought stuff in there before for LO

Kathy Lees Not a fan of primark.

I've been there several times as the girls at work rave on about the cheap bargains they got there. I went there with OH and he sat outside waiting for me while I had a look in there. I didn't realise I was in there for about 40mins!

I find that their sizing is big, they don't cater for petite and the quality is just poor.

I will still go in there from time to time to see if they have nice accessories though.

In my experience, you have to pay for quality.
September 13th, 2007 05:53 AM
wuzysong I'm not that bothered about quality though, i usually ruin stuff anyway!!
September 13th, 2007 06:03 AM
Ali It's great for kids stuff and I've had a few bits and pieces from there for myself too.

It's pointless spending a lot on kids clothes. I bought my daughter a pile of summer tops, jackets and shorts from there at the beginning of the holidays and they've been fine. Didn't cost me more than £40.

I know for a fact that fashion will have changed by next summer and she won't give this lot a second glance but I won't mind so much chucking it out when it's only cost me something like £3 a top.
September 13th, 2007 06:52 AM
Mia Wallace I went in there last month and spent £98!!!

I still have clothes from there I have not worn as there was just LOADS!!
I also bagged a few decent buys for work (office stuff)
In the past I have paid £35+ for trousers from next and withing a few months they look tatty.

I bought 3 pairs of trousers fot £15 and they still look brand new!!

Gets my vote every time!
September 13th, 2007 07:40 AM
Cleo I voted no. I think shops like Primark contribute to a negative consumer driven throw away attitude

God, you know, some time I even bore myself.
September 13th, 2007 07:56 AM
wuzysong whereas house of fraser and debenhams contribute to a nation of kids who need brand names to keep up with their mates and the pressure of taking store cards and getting into unnecessary debt...??

Is that directed at me, Wuzy?

I'm not a fan of consumerism in any guise, but I think the parents should just say no if the kid is pestering for branded clothes from the shops you have mentioned.

People should just buy what they need and what they can afford. There's nothing to disagree on there, is there?

Keeps them off the streets though. All you hear is how these third world countries "don't want charity", but look how they grumble when they have to work instead...
September 13th, 2007 08:27 AM
Tiggerrr I do use it, mainly because it's great for cheap work clothes, in fact the outfit I am wearing at the moment cost £14.

September 13th, 2007 10:05 AM
Ani In fact there was an article I read in the newspaper (Guardian??!? can't remember) about Primark has signed an ethical agreement of NOT using 'Child labour', however, they define 'child' being under 14(or something like that!!). It did mention about the problem of having a landfield of clothes, because things are so cheap, and people throw them away easy enough. so, Rabbit and Cleo have mentioined good points there.

We buy clothes from the charity shops and give them back, it keeps the clothes recycled and generate revenue for research etc. I even have a gift-aid card!!! :D I do shop in other shops too but I am not obsessed with shopping, I don't spend too much to feel guilty.

I do have few Primark's tops. They were on sales.

:)

Loz Love it. I enjoy clothes shopping, I like fashion and creating different looks, but I'm on a tight budget. Primark has a really good selection of "now" clothes for really cheap that I buy, wear, then either give to charity or keep until they roll back into fashion the next time! I bought a floaty 1920's style summer dress from there recently that I've worn out a couple times and love, but that I wouldn't have bought if it had been any more than a tenner cos I wouldn't be able to justify it.
