Topie: Kim Meyers, Talent Scout?????
August 30th, 2010 10:53 PM
fl_chic I got an email from a friend on behalf of a friend whose daughter wants to act.

They had been approached by a new 'talent scout' in town here in Tallahassee named Kim Meyers. She wants to charge them $1500 to go to Orlando for...something. Of course, no promise of work. It's not clear if it's a class or seminar or what, but even if it was, isn't that price a bit, well, pricey????

I have no details but did google the name & talent scout, coming up with stories in other states about this person.

My question is, has anyone else dealt with this person directly??? Obviously most of us know not to shell out that kind of money, but my friend's friend did not. She has not committed to anything, however, so I hope I've saved her an ordeal.

Thanks in advance for any info you can give :)

fl_chic PS: The spelling could be 'Myers'. I just spelled it how she sent the info to me :)

irish nana It sounds like one of those wonderful conventions where the child will be seen by scouts and agents from Disney and everywhere. My daughter went to listen to one of these scams, and it was Orlando, and you had to stay at their hotel, and pay their fees, and get shown to their contacts. Think about it realisitically, if all yo had to do is go to Orlando, why would anyone need an agent? Especially an agent who isn't charging you. I bet when she pays the fee, she then finds out her room is not included. No. no no........ RED FLAG with storm warnings attached.

mhennum Sounds like AMTC which does their big convention in Orlando. Mixed reviews...I know people who have gone and have gotten signed by NY and LA agents and have gotten work and then I know people who have not. I would proceed with caution and go with gut instincts!

Voiceroy My guess is it's AMTC too, which is not a scam.

I was a contestant for AMTC's Winter 2007 convention in Orlando and besides winning a handful of awards, afterwards I signed with three different talent agencies (one is among the top agencies in Atlanta). And I'm still getting referrals and booking gigs to this day thanks to my involvement in AMTC.

I honestly don't believe I would have been able to be self-employed as a performer for the last 2 years without the benefits that being at AMTC provided for me. AMTC has a solid reputation in the industry. To call them a scam would be equal to calling a host of industry professionals foolish for referring them and attending the convention as judges and to scout for talent for their agencies, projects and productions, such as J. Pervis Talent, AcmeCasting Atlanta, Tyler Perry Studios, Mattel Casting, MGM/United Casting, and I could go on and on.

fl_chic, you know me here and know I wouldn't steer you wrong.

I also have contacts with AMTC and can verify whether or not Kim Myers is a talent scout for them. Send me a PM and I'll follow up on it for you.

eternalrose fl_chic, I've never heard of her. I'm originally from Tallahassee, although I moved to NC Halloween 07. If Craig finds out she's a scammer and you're looking representation for your daughter, I'd recommend Set 5. I've had friends that have worked through them, and they get a lot of local business for commercials and print ads.

Good luck!!

Voiceroy fl_chic, I have verified that this was not affiliated with AMTC.

I sent a message to an AMTC contact I have in in Florida who says that Kim Myers was once a talent scout for AMTC but she now "does a convention similar to AMTC" and adds that "the person who is scouting in Tallahasse was Ashely Kicklight with Integrity Model Mgmt." Their website is http://integritymodelmgt.com/

She also added that Kim's convention is "very reputable" and that both my contact and her daughter were represented by Ashley's agency.

fl_chic I just now checked in to see these responses & I appreciate the input very much!! I so enjoy being a part of this board & being able to bounce things off of all of the members. It's such a wonderful place to be!!

Craig, you're right, I do know you wouldn't steer me, or anyone, wrong and I am really appreciative of your efforts to see if Kim was associated with that convention!

In the end, the friend of a friend opted not to go with this particular scout. It was a lot of money and something they would have done only in the event that it was definitely something Not to be missed& they were positive it was on the up and up.

Wanda, thanks for the info.. you are actually on my FB page (Tamara)!! It wasn't my daughter but I certainly will pass that info on :)

Thanks again, everyone!!!
