Posted January 13th, 2006 04:29 PM IP I just finished watching Sin City.
THE best comic book (graphic novel) based movie I have ever seen.
I've never read the Sin City books, I should, and I might. I thought this film was just amazing. The city looked brilliant, and the characters were played brilliantly. Mickey Rourke did an insanely good job as Marv. I'm sure the characters hit you more if you know them already from the books, but....Jesus, this was an awesome flick.

Just watched "Shaun of the Dead". Zombies and comedy...brilliant!!! The "I'm coming to get you Barbara", Shaun's rescue plans, and some of the television scenes at the very end (zombies in the service industry LMAO!!!) were hillarious.
Now "Sin City"...I've only seen it once but I really enjoyed it. Visually its a stunning movie - black and white with random splashes of colour. Maybe I'll go watch it again....

Posted January 13th, 2006 08:08 PM IP Watched "Sin City" again...I had forgotten how good this movie is. Besides the visuals, which are brilliant, I love the dialogue. The voice-over monologues are almost poetic at times.
I agree that Marv was the best performance, his story is so tragic and poigant.

Posted January 21st, 2006 05:02 PM IP New Movie: The Butterfly Effect

I highly reccomend this movie. Ashton Kutcher does a really good job breaking from the "kelso role" on that 70's show. Its a very well written movie that has amazing characters that you care about. Now I will say if you have not seen the directors cut, it is a must. It has a COMPLETELY different ending and it is very interesting. So what do you all think?

Posted January 23rd, 2006 04:38 PM IP I love this movie. I'd heard mixed reviews, so I didn't know what to expect, but I was hooked from the get-go. You have to be in a deep, sort of thoughtful mood, though, I think. It's so gutwrenching and bleak, wow. If you haven't seen it, do so, it's awesome.

Posted February 15th, 2006 04:21 PM IP I heard about this movie for a few years and never saw it, I borrowed it from a friend about 5 months ago. My fear was everybody said it was awesome and I was afraid that I would have too high expectations and not like it. But it is a very trippy movie. I highly reccomend it to anyone that likes the off the wall movies that make you think.

Posted February 15th, 2006 04:26 PM IP I stole this movie, lol.....not literally, I borrowed it from someone who didnt want it, and I never gave it back! :p
I had heard mixed reviews about Donnie Darko for a good few months before seeing it. I heard people say it was "pointless and annoying" and I heard others saying that it was "amazing and completely original" and I would agree with the latter.
I loved this flick, but I didn't realise just HOW much I liked it until about an hour after I finished watching it. Gave me so much to think about, and BOY.....that is rare in movies. Its a must-see in my opinion, awesome!

I enjoyed "Saw II" very much although I cannot decide if I prefer it to the original "Saw" or not. When I watched the first movie, I did NOT see that ending coming. Yes, I assumed Zep the orderly was not the Jigsaw killer. However, when the "body" on the bathroom floor got up...I almost hit the floor. The subsequent flashback sequence put all the pieces together. Brilliant.
When I watched "Saw II" I expected a similar kick-you-in-the-ass sort of ending. And as such, during the flick I kept watching for signs and clues. The final ending did surprise me, because as with the first one - I did not see it coming. However, because I was waiting and watching for the shock, that took some of the pleasure of the movie from me. So therefore I cannot decide if the sequel surpases the original.
As for the movie itself....I felt very little sympathy for the people trapped in Jigsaw's game. The only ones I did hope would survive were Daniel and Amanda. So when the ending came....Amanda as the "new" Jigsaw killer...again, like the first film, brilliant. The best performance in the film was the character of John, the game master himself. Unlike Dectective Matthews, I could have listened to his ideas and theories forever.
I've read that a third "Saw" is currently in the works. I don't like the idea of this. Let Jigsaw and his games rest in peace.

Posted February 19th, 2006 09:19 PM IP I agree with alot of that.
I will begin by seconding the displeasure of hearing about a third SAW flick in the works, they might pull it off, but I hate when good ideas are done to death...it just tarnishes the originals somewhat.
Ok, onto the film.
I was also watching for clues and stuff throughout the movie, looking and listening for stuff that I wasn't listening or looking for when I first watched SAW. I think the story and the delving further into the psyche of the killer was a really cool idea, and one that I haven't really seen before. The "locked in a house" idea was great, really easy to get into, and almost Dawn of the Dead like, hunting around for help.....in an enclosed space, learning and discovering their surroundings. I really dig that concept.
The twists were, as I expected, really good, and suprising. I wasnt as suprised as I was in the original, but I was really pleased with it none the less.
It's a tough call to say if I prefer this, or the original. I think I like the acting in the sequel better, but the overall "YIKES" factor wasn't as strong.
Awesome movie, which adds to my point...why the United States INSISTS on remaking Japanese movies (BADLY, I might add), when they have some budding film makers with great ideas in the basement, well....thats just fucking stupid.

I'll second that. The second film was directed by a different man than the first. "Saw II" was orignally a different screenplay (another movie) written by the second director. The writer of the original "Saw" helped him take the ideas and adapt them to Jigsaw's game. So with this series, we have good writers and directors...give them more movies to make!!! And stop with the remakes, Asian film or not, and unneccesary sequels.

Posted February 19th, 2006 10:25 PM IP O.k. let me see if I can get my thoughts across to you in a way that makes sense to even me....first I agree with you guys, I don't think a 3rd would work. First off I think he was just perfect as the jigsaw killer and him as her mentor was a great ending, that is where it should end. I am with Vilia in that I think I could have listened to him talk and his theories for most of the movie...I liked the house and also found myself routing for the bad guy instead of the people in the house. I felt so sorry for Amanda because I figured he would go harder on her for screwing up again LOL. It is a tough call between the two but I think the really great part of 1 is that the people had to deal with their own guilts and shame, knowing that those things put them there and they had to make amends. In 2 those elements were there but they also had to fight amongst each other as well. I love the fact that all he had to do was sit and talk to John and his son would be just fine, although the anger in all of us would have gotten the best of us. I also have to say that ending up in the same place as the first one began and ended was also very awesome.

Posted February 21st, 2006 10:54 AM IP I really enjoyed Saw II but not as much as the first. The first one totally shocked me as to the second one I was really looking into it too much.I kind of had it figured out in the beginning when Amanda seemed to take offense when that one guy called Jigsaw a serial killer. She screamed something along the lines of "He is not! He is just testing us."That line made me think okay something is up with that. lol
I really enjoyed the part where John was trying to explain what he did and why he did it.He kind of had a valid point that most people do take life and what they have for granted. His reason for cutting out the jigsaw shaped piece from their skin I thought was brilliant.
I enjoy both of these movies so much just because I have never seen a movie like it before. The guy never killed anybody. He just put them in circumstances to see how far they would actually go to save their own lives.Kind of like a test of how much does your life mean to you.

I thought that was kind of suspicious too, but then I recalled how in the first movie she said something along the lines of "He saved me." So I wasn't suspicious.
Did anyone else notice that Amanda and Daniel were the only ones who didn't cough blood in the Jigsaw house?

I think it is because everything that went on in the house was ealier and he had taped it so it wasn't really live feed coming to the cops. Daniel was in the safe the whole time and Amanda was waiting in that nasty bathtub. I did notice Amanda showed a great deal of respect for John but I also thought it was because he had "saved' her in the first one and she figured she deserved to be there...I sure didn't see the ending coming!

There's a brief scene in the flashback sequence at the end where Amanda is shown carrying an unconcious Daniel into Jigsaw's hideout. Like Chantel says, what the cops were watching was pre-recorded so...there was plenty of time to move Daniel.
