Posted 16-03-2010 10:42 IP Watched with interest last night as panorama did a show about the govt passing a law about illegal downloading and serious offenders will have their isp passed onto record compnies who will sue and net providers will seriously slow down offenders connection speed. I think the most startling fact was how people under 25 (in general) view taking music for free off torrent sites and don't see the harm. There must be a happy medium somewhere but labels will never get their heads together with artists etc to sort it out because there are so many greedy peeps involved.
Try before you buy would be the way to go with people being able to DL and say play it 3 times before it expires and the listener has to then buy I can't see the industry being successful in prosecuting individuals because proving it will be tough seeing as people can hide their isp's and also tap into other unlocked accounts. Interesting debate though. But personally I will support artists I like and will always source out the physical cd but I guess I'm in the minority, so many pinch massive amounts including whole back catalogs without ever then going out and paying their dues or buying concert tickets.
I guess the bottom line is people just don't collect their music like the old days and don't see it the same way anymore. No doubt there will come a time where cd's in the future will be as alien to our grandchildren as 8 tracks to us 40 somethings ;-) 'Singing from the grave is so very hard to do' JT

Posted 16-03-2010 19:13 IP The industry only has itself to blame here in my opinion. Remember that comission that looked into CD prices being too high???? 'No way' was the answer, so how come an album is now the same price as a single was back then???? They priced themselves out of the market whilst the internet created a leaky bucket for their product to slip out of. I don't like Downloads full stop, as generally even teh ones you buy sound like compressed SHIT. I was only saying to a local music vendor the other day how much better the 180gms NMTB LP sounded than the CD. Just goes to prove we never needed to get rid of them old LP's in the first place.
Fuck Downloads buy LP's and tape them ;-) I'm here I'm there I'm everywhere....so beware

Posted 17-03-2010 22:37 IP I download from torrents for several reasons,to try new albums out first,if I like I will buy,to replace all the albums I originally bought on cassette(never liked vinyl-shock horror!)or just to have stuff I cant find anywhere else.I dont do the paying for downloads thing I refuse to pay for a digital product, there's no feeling like getting the shiny cd with full artwork etc as we all know, and it will be a sad day when stop producing cds.Like you say,the industry only has itself to blame, with all the software easily and cheaply available, even being able to print artwork onto discs now.
Mind you I have just been on Amazon this evening and purchased several cd's to replace old tapes, some amazing bargains if you look, just got Redd Kross-Phaseshifter,These Animal Men - Taxi... and Too Sussed ep's all for under a tenner.taxi was 80p! Cant complain at that price eh? no synthesizers or ulterior motives

Posted 18-03-2010 18:57 IP I'm the same as bennyman, I download some old stuff I've already bought several times and also some new stuff, especially when it's from bigger bands made up of millionaires wanting peoples hard drives. Fuck 'em. Those I'll get on ebay a few months down the line. I'll always buy stuff (cds, shirts, whatever) directly from the smaller bands I like, like Tigertailz, Thunder etc as you know the money goes to them and not some greedy twat in an ill fitting suit rubbing his wad in his c(o)unting house. The bigger bands get more than enough from me when I buy their 50 quid tickets and 20 quid shirts at the gigs. That's the way I see it.
I'm no businessman but I think the record industry could cut downloading in half near instantly and make more money than it's made in years if it just lowered it's prices in the shops. When is any record shop the busiest? New year sales, when everything is about 5 quid yes? Am I right? I think so. People walking round with arms full of cds because 5 quid is a reasonable price and 16 quid is not. Simple. Everyone wants the proper physical album but not if it comes at the price of having to limp all the way home because you've just been shafted so much!
Chaos rules and anything could happen
