Posted 02-02-2010 17:30 IP After the weekend I suddenly realised that in general the old music shop has died bar the odd one or two that are fighting against the tide what we 'oldies' used to call the record shop has left the building.
There used to be a time where we had HMV, Our Price and we had a virgin record shop as well as several specialist rock shops and three second hand shops that were all pretty decent now we have 1 solitary HMV that has more phones and t shirts than it does cd's let alone decent cd's and 1 independent shop thats main business is tickets and 1 second hand shop that only has a few hundred cd's. I used to love going to places like London and browsing round the promo shops in soho and a load of other shops but recently there was only sister ray left in soho and HMV on poxford st How sad is that?
Even somewhere like New York has seen an end to some of the cracking shops that used to be in the lower village, yup guess what? - all gone. How sad is it that our children will never be able to spend hours switched off and mooching through the isles of record shops finding out new releases by the cool bands for hours on end or meeting like minded mates hanging round outside arguing over a record sleeve or is glam coming back and what are the chances of Odin doing a full uk tour?. I was chatting about it today and we realised how sad it was.
Anyway do the readers of Uber Rock know of any good ones still open in their town maybe we should put up a list of shops that support good rock music. I know Tunny reads here and he had a go I always remember the kurfuffle over his shutters and the cool bands he used to get to play his shop. Is there any places left like that? I remember one in Kingston, surry was decent and Action in Preston as well. Raise a glass and champion the ickle record store still out there kicking against the pricks! \m/ 'Singing from the grave is so very hard to do' JT

Posted 02-02-2010 19:26 IP We should open Über Röck Recörds - it could be like the shop in High Fidelity but we wouldn't sell anything, we'd all live there like the fucking Monkees listening to cool shit all day!!!
Seriously, so many important records bought in so many important indie record shops that kept this country rocking and rolling. Jim's, RPM, Roxcene, Discovery, Kestrel, Rockaway, Spillers, Computability, Hitman - I salute thee!!! Some all important albums bought across those legends over the years....
Dean Beddis from Bad Samaritans (and formerly Cowboy Killers) is gonna be writing some retro blogs for us in the future and he is still fighting the fight, taking over Rockaway in Newport Market and turning it into Kriminal Records. Already getting skanked by money-grabbing gig ticket wankers but he's doing it old school. Loads of vintage vinyl, etc. \m/ \m/

Totally agree mate,my local one Track Records in York closed 2 years ago,I shed a tear.....record shops were more then just a shop, they were meeting places on a Saturday afternoon to hang out with ya mates and check out all the new releases etc and find the odd bargain.Used to visit Musiquarium in the market in Swansea every weekend when I lived there,is that lil shop still there? The market in Cardiff was always good for bargain rock stuff too.All thats left for me in York is the very badly stocked HMV,even all the 2nd hand stores seem to be just a distant memory now.Tis not the same just clicking a button on Play.com and waiting for something to turn up in the post, times they are a changing, and we dont seem to have much choice but to go with the flow. no synthesizers or ulterior motives

Posted 02-02-2010 21:27 IP Musiquarium has been gone for a few years Benny, I remember buying my first Wildhearts cd from there, in the end though it was shite store that had a new manager and wasn't that good.
I can't actually remember the last time I went into a record shop... pretty sad really.
Although I will stick up for the net, ebay, amazon, play etc. where else would I have been able to get the Jerusalem Slim cd from?
I still occasionally order stuff from RockBox thats in surrey, which I was doing before my internet days aswell. I used to love looking through their catalouge. Live Like A Fucker, You Die Like A Motherfucker.

Posted 02-02-2010 21:27 IP nah musiquarium went after julian sold it and the guy just stocked old blues cd's and lived his dream for 6 months before he just got lazy and when you went in and asked for a cd he'd go online buy it from play or amazon then add a few quid and flog it to you. Bit daft really but it shut a few years now. 'Singing from the grave is so very hard to do' JT

It's definitely there still mate. I popped in on my way home last night. You're right though, getting away was difficult, largely on account of them removing several limbs for me in return for a handful of CDs

Now, he's reviewing Asia albums for us!!! Art Is Not Safe

Stared at the LWTCDI cover for an eternity trying to work out if I wanted to wank over it or buy it. I bought it. Posted 14-03-2010 15:50 IP I've just come home to the Isle of Wight for a few days (yes, home! I ran away from here a few years ago) and the old record shop "Record Mania" which we used to think was full of fleas and really horrible, is still there! I'm so glad to see it's still going. It's funny to think how different buying music was only a few years ago. We never knew how good we had it Station Agents

Posted 16-03-2010 20:39 IP Haha excellent! How crazy that they'd be another on here who knows little ol' Record Mania! It's moved locations now, but not far! If it wasn't for that place I might never have got into the Dogs D'amour, or Marillion... but that's another story, haha Station Agents
