Posted 04-16-08 10:13 AM IP What Metal Gear series have you been playing?! I think the foxy one will back me up in saying theres all kinds of mysterious plots and such going on in these games. totally unbelievable plot, but still, plot.
and actually, a lot of the reasons they give for the alternate history in MGS are facts from our real history.
but i'm so totally buying it because its pretty.
because it is SO pretty. I am Vichyssoise, the patron soup of revenge!

speaking of... PJ still has my copy of that, unless he lost it when he moved, which I wouldnt doubt. I am Vichyssoise, the patron soup of revenge!

Posted 04-16-08 09:59 PM IP *assassinates Eisen with a knife* ....sacreligious tard... *wipes the blood off onto his camo fatigues and adjusts his bandana* ...Yeah, you should play MGS 1, if not Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. There's plenty of story...MGS2 was simply a filler of sorts to better develop the characters.
Besides, even if you don't like the story, the gameplay of MGS4 should blow the minds of nearly everyone. (Before he somehow was controled by liquid's arm)
Besides, if you don't play the game for Snake, play it for Revolver Ocelot...the guy is frickin amazing. seriously. anyway... *smiles* you should watch the trailers even if you're not a fan. in my opinion, its the game that will accelerate the PS3 into greater success until Final Fantasy XIII comes out. ~Kya-Kyon!!~

And I totally sure that MGS4 is going to have fun gameplay but, I prefer Splinter Cell. I'm an AMURICAN, that way. If a wood chuck could chuck wood.............would anyone care?

Posted 04-17-08 03:14 PM IP Splinter Cell is a really well designed game. I don't like the plotlines because working for the government unquestioningly makes me sick to my stomach, but it's really a star in the crown of the stealth genre. Posted 04-17-08 03:35 PM IP see, Snake works for the government and then comes to the uncomfortable realization that they've been tricking him all along.
way cooler.
though i will admit that until the third game, the controls are a bit less than intuitive. I am Vichyssoise, the patron soup of revenge!

Posted 04-17-08 07:08 PM IP Splinter cell is just a better designed game than MGS in general. The lockpicking, cryptography, the enemies' AI; basically all the features are more sophisticated. The belief that religion is a requirement of morality stinks of sociopathy...

Posted 04-18-08 09:30 PM IP  But all in all Splinter Cell is a child of MGS :P seeing as how MG dates back to nintendo's roots ^^;
Naturally a game that made its debut on a next gen console is going to be 'better designed'. ~Kya-Kyon!!~

Posted 04-21-08 10:01 AM IP I'm not captain savvy on the game system lingo, but i think the first splinter cell game was on the PS2 which counts as 'next gen' compared to 'nintendo roots' (which i assume is N64 or earlier), however, even though Metal Gear Solid was, no doubt, a pioneer in the stealth genre, i don't think a franchise should get a free pass just because its predecessor was involved in changing the industry. Case in point, Final Fantasy X2, sure, the early FF games reinvented the console RPG genre for all time, but that doesn't excuse a lame game. Splinter Cell is a really impressive franchise: Almost all of the tiles are programmed individually to generate more or less sound when touched (including things that hang from the ceiling such as rope, chain, pots and pans, or clothing on a line), the light is measured by saturation rather than by simple 'light' or 'dark' switches, the lockpicking is as realistic as you can get in a console environment, and, in general, it's a programming marvel in terms of finding surprisingly few places to criticise laughable divorce from reality (though, it's still pretty amusing that you can get shot in the head and survive). Metalgear 2 was fun, but relatively stale in that it didn't have anything to offer that i couldn't find in other stealth or action games. The belief that religion is a requirement of morality stinks of sociopathy...

Posted 04-21-08 11:41 AM IP You might be interested to know Mori that a head shot is not actually a guaranteed kill. There is a small flipped up "triangle of death" that is from both eyes to the mouth but other than that area all other shots have the potential to be deflected from the rounded skull. So to effectively kill some one with a head shot you must reduce the size of your target are to this for the face or otherwise you run the risk of just hitting them. Still I would imagine that even being struck with a mere Biretta it would still be sufficient to shock a person severely but you can at least grant some credence to the game for that lack of mortality attached to the shot. ~Dante~

Posted 04-21-08 11:42 AM IP By that logic yes it is "next-Gen", but it started on the XBOX not the PS2. It was originally an exclusive but it turned into something else. If a wood chuck could chuck wood.............would anyone care?

Posted 04-21-08 05:28 PM IP there really needs to be a better naming scheme for these console generations. from a nintendo-baby standpoint, I see anything after the PS1/N64/GameCube era as 'next-gen' though that title properly refers now to the PS3/360/Wii generation...
but compared to the release of even the first metal gear SOLID game, the first Splinter Cell game was next gen. and the first actual Metal Gear game is older than me, so if you go by that standard, splinter cell was past generation z and back around to double-b!
but MGS2 was rushed - look at it this way. MGS2 was built from the ground up within a year of the PS2 launch. the third game, which is much better, was a whole 3 years after that. and this fourth game, which already looks like it'll be leaps and bounds above the last, has been in development as basically the limit-pusher for the PS3 since the console was still in development (not too long after the 3rd game came out in '04).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console
this better explains a naming scheme for console generations. I am Vichyssoise, the patron soup of revenge!

Posted 04-21-08 11:52 PM IP I love how you simply said it was a better machine and didn't exactly expand on it...
Just curious, cause I really don't know your standpoint...how is an Xbox better than a Ps2? have you owned both? have you intimately probed each one for it's specs while playing? It's like saying Zune is better than Ipod, or a PSP is better than a Gameboy.
Where I come from... usually power to play and keep games at a comfortable speed and have a wide variety of games means the console is better than other consoles that don't.
I'm also not saying that Xbox completely sucks, even I like to shoot some people on Halo sometimes...And Splinter Cell is good... I just don't like hearing how everyone was spoiled with the new crap and refuse to play games like MGS because of "stupid plotlines" and "limited game control". Call me weird...but the difficutly of games as of late has been dimished greatly (besides FPS) and I believe that the difference between a "good" game and a "bad" game is simply the difficulty of the camera, controls and graphics. Don't get me wrong, when camera's suck...wow...yeah I get pissed. But if the controls or actions are limited, I find that challenging and fun.
In any case, judging from the entire perspective of this topic... no one save Megan and myself have played MGS, and MGS 3: Snake Eater. Only MGS2, and quite frankly you all should know better than to judge predeceors by their immediate sequel, movie or game. Like Mori said... FFX-2 is a prime example.

| In order,
1. Yes I have owned both consoles and I prefered the X-box, better games, better lifespan. (my PS2 only lasted 5 months, while the X-box lasted 2 years.)
2. I don't care if the game has "limited control" as long as it does what I tell it to do.
3. I have played MGS, and MGS 3:snake eater (i didn't finish either because I didn't like either.)
4. I don't judge a game by it's Prequels or sequels. If a wood chuck could chuck wood.............would anyone care?

Everyone has their preferences. Kitsune and I have our loyalties to the Metal Gear franchise and the Playstation systems (though I, at least, am more than willing to admit the flaws of both) and you to your games and systems of choice.
if we're going to get into the console war, lets make a thread for it (or two, even, because PS2 vs Xbox is a far different argument than 360 vs PS3). the REAL topic here is that I'M GONNA BE IN THE MGO BETA, BITCHES! Uhn, uhn, yeah! **is doin a dance** I am Vichyssoise, the patron soup of revenge!
