Posted February 25th, 2007 05:39 PM IP There are many foreshadowing of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament.
The Jews recognized these foreshadowings or types of Christ for they were constantly expecting and awaiting the Messiah. The promise that God would send a Redeemer of mankind was the focal point of their lives.
As I was reading through the Book of Exodus last night ; I came across yet another example I had never dwelled upon.
I would like to share this with you.
Exo 20:24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.
Exo 20:25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.
Exo 20:26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.
The Jews are without a House of God for the Tabernacle has yet to have been built.
I find it interesting that God commands them not build a fixed altar that will be left behind once worship service is over and the tribes move on to their next stop along the way.
Why?
Wouldn't God want the very best?
God knew these altars would be left standing without anyone around to explain and witness to the nomads and wayward travellers of the God of Abraham , Issac and Jacob so the altars were made from pushed up earth then after the sacrifices ; they were leveled down so nothing remained.
God didn't want people speculating on the purpose of these altars and coming to superstitious and false practices that could led to pagan worship and abuse.
I think of landmarks like Stonehedge and the Pyramids that were probably used to worship the suns and stars. People seem to worship the creation instead of the Creator.
I find that interesting because look at how many books and the amount of wonderment of mystery that has devoted to these man made objects.
To get back on the subject.
The foreshadowing of Christ the Jews understood in this was the altar.
Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.
Heb 13:9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
Heb 13:10 We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle.
Heb 13:11 For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp.
This altar of earth which was Christ putting on the flesh of man and upon this Earthen Altar the sacrifice which offers atonement and redemption for man's sins were laid.
Exo 20:24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.
Look at the last part of that verse............(in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.)
Whosoever will call upon the name of the Lord who is Jesus Christ and He alone is the only path to salvation ; he will dwell in us and we will be saved. Amen!
Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Mat 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
2Co 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
2Co 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
2Co 6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
And lastly ; I wanted to touch on this.....................
The true plan of salvation is taught in this verse.
Exo 20:25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.
If you call upon the name of the Lord for salvation it is as the stone.
Salvation is from God as the stone was created by God.
If a person lifts up their tool upon it ; salvation is tainted.
Salvation can't be earned on your merit. It is a gift from God as the stone for the altar.
Your works aren't a part of salvation.
If a person had to use their works to gain salvation or their works to retain their salvation ; then it would cease to be a gift from God.
Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Along with the last verse in this passage.
Exo 20:26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.
When appoaching Jesus for salvation ; there are no steps to climb.
All we need to do is ask and it shall be given freely.
If we are depending on works or religious nonsense ; God will see us in our sins and our nakedness will be discovered.
This relates to Adam and Eve when they fell from grace.
Their nakedness was cover by God through a blood sacrifice.
God didn't have Adam cover themselves but the Scripture says ............
Gen 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
God covered their nakedness but it required the death of an innocent for justification for a sinner to stand before God.
The slain Lamb of God the only cover for our nakedness.
Amen! 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
