Just trying to determine if they are history or still popular.

Do you just visit exco's support and no board?
Or visit and have a board?

Where do you visit the most?

Personally, I do not like the social networking system. I spend more than enough time doing admin on our board, I don't even visit the facebook page, nor will I. Might be my age showing, but I really don't care what Suzie did an hour ago, or if Bill drank 7 shots before dinner. The lack of privacy of todays society (especially the internet) bothers me and the less I participate, the happier I am.

I only have a cell phone (no land line) and that gives me more than enough ways to 'connect' with friends/family/business. I will not give personal information to strangers, even if they are friends of friends.

We have a very active board and I visit this help forum almost every day to check for help or see what others are doing. I like the people who still post here and wish it was more active.

Message boards are very much active in a lot of places I visit. Like Rancher I would love to see more activity here, but over the years it has died down. We only get the occasional new member, or someone having an issue with a script. I have to delete just as much spam posts as legitimate ones .

Yeah I feel the same way Kiendra. I realized today that I have not visited FB for a week I do go in and check but not really do anything.

I only visit facebook for the game Evony. Made a fake FB account for that purpose. I think it unwise to leave traces with to much private info on the web.

So i agree with the two above. Some people dont mind though and put all the crap they do on the internet.

Still quietly run my exco but not had any real new members for ages. Many have moved on, some to fb others just to pastures new. I keep it going for the few that remain but admit I am not as active on it as I used to be.

I think that specialist boards probably still have a place but not so much 'general' boards

I have 2 fb accounts, one specifically for family and close friends, the second for casual friends (real life and internet). I only post personal info on the first, play games on the second.

Oh and I play WoW

I use to have a board years ago that was really popular scrapbooking all sorts. Then I started a support group and now I just blog. But looking for a forum host. May just come back here. The host I was on is having some issues.

I am hardly ever on FB. I am so wary of the games and applications because you never know what info they get from you or people on your friends list.

There's no chance of the Exco boards closing though is there Miz?, the few that use ours are happy with it

There aren't any signs of Exco shutting down. I'm sure peter would let us know if there were any.

Message boards or forums that I am a part of are very active...both are private and not open to the general public. I do enjoy visiting other types of boards/forums that are specific to my needs.

There are things I may share on a "private" forum but not on a social network site such as FaceBook.

I think it depends mainly on the topic.

If you're running a board about say, err... popular music...
then yeah, if it's well promoted, you should have an active membership.

But if your board is about say, err... 'The Ancient Art of Snail Identification'...
then yeah, maybe you might have a few more problems building up a membership.

easy... Justin

At one time I had a scrapbooking board way back when it was really popular hobby, the board was busy. I had a general board but it frizzled out. I might just keep blogging because I have tons of people (followers) that way.

UPDATE: May have to revise my original post. I've noticed a decline in new members AND lack of participation on our board since January. Seems the FaceBook page is going gang busters. I still don't spend any time on FB.

Our forum is active with several posts per day but many of them are from our members who've been around a long time. Maybe they prefer this format (as do I).

My board seems to go through fits and bursts, it goes really quiet, then all of a sudden, it gets busy. I do think there will always be a place for message boards, they seem to last longer than anything else and while twitter and facebook are popular, it is more discussions that message boards have. I have had my board for four years and have recently affiliated with another lady who has been around for some time and as a result of this, I have picked up some new members.

Absolutely Fabulous.

It also depends on the season, or where you live (country). I get a lot more active in the Fall and Winter and less active in the Spring and Summer.

Message boards were still doing really well when all there was was MySpace but that site went to the sewer and now Facebook is the reining champ for now. Sadly it seems that forums and message boards are dying out. I for one am very proud of ALL the boards I have made over the years here and love my last surviving board
(Realm Of The Undead).

Message boards are going down in the sense of communication between friends. They are however, still the most efficient way to store and share information, and get help within a community that is build around a company, service, etc. When I need help with a tech issue, I always find what I'm looking for in message boards.

Unfortunately, the board I belong to has lost out to facebook. Members (now lurkers) still visit to see if there is any information they can take to share in the sharing hell of facebook, but rarely share any info from facebook with those of us left on the board. Sad.

IMO facebook will run it's course eventually (God, I hope it's soon) when everyone figures out it's just a datamining site with a privileged few getting rich off unsuspecting members. FB is free, and you always get what you pay for.

I'll stop here, but, believe me, I could go on and on and on and . . .
