UPDATE: Kyle Bellows was also selected as one of four Collegiate Baseball Newspaper/ Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week! He is believed to be the first national player of the week honoree since Matt Durkin in 2003.
Junior infielder Kyle Bellows has been named the Western Athletic Conference’s Hitter of the Week for May 4-10. Bellows, a product of San Jose’s Santa Teresa High School, hit .583 (14-for-24) with 12 runs scored, 17 RBI, four home runs, two doubles and two walks as SJSU took three of four in a series against New Mexico State at Las Cruses. Bellows was also a perfect 16-for-16 in fielding opportunities at shortstop.
The Spartans host five games at Municipal Stadium this week, including a four-game set with Nevada that will go a long way to deciding the regular season WAC title. The Spartans enter the week with a 35-17 record overall and 11-7 in the WAC. Nevada is in third place with a 10-9 record in league play. The top two teams in the regular season standings receive a bye in the first round of the conference tournament which will be played at Hawai’i, May 21-24.

This home series, for Spartan baseball, is the most exciting and important I can remember in quite some time. I believe personally, that we need to keep the momentum going and win at least 3 out of 5 games here in our yard. Our destiny is in our own hands now. We are within grasp of the WAC regular season championships and I don't want us to stop until we make it to Omaha. What are your thoughts? Do you believe we'll win out a get the invite to Omaha?

Babigos, you are ever so right! It is always best to be in control than to hope someone else must produce in order so that you can grab the brass ring. No heat with this request, but I will be in Grenada for two weeks and there is a wi-fi at the resort and you are the one I will depend on to cry out the words, "WE WON THE WAC"!
Thanking you and others ahead and Go Spartans

Posted 05-12-09 08:38 PM IP The Spartans vs Snotfurd baseball game should be winding up by now. Does anyone have a score?
*LA Tech has been on fire as of late, so I think we need to win 4 or our last 5 regular season games. And 3 of the 4 with Nevada. LA Tech is on our heels! Go Spartans!

Posted 05-12-09 09:40 PM IP If I may be permitted a little play-by-play via laptop .... nothing for Stanford in the 10th, we get runners on first and second, but can't score. On to the 11th.

Posted 05-12-09 10:18 PM IP Now heading into the 13th ... both teams have had runners in scoring postition in just about every inning, but just can't get the duck off the pound. However blinks first loses this one.

Posted 05-12-09 10:37 PM IP Spartans lose in 13, 6-5. Lots of missed opportunities. At this point, even if we win the WAC regular season title, I'm thinking SJSU definitely needs to win the WAC tourney to move on to the NCAA's. We simply haven't beat anyone of consequence this year...

Posted 05-12-09 10:49 PM IP I'm just glad it's finally over. Anything more than 10 innings and I start getting Zzzzzzz. Oh well, this weekend will tell just how badly the Spartans want to win the WAC. It's their's for the taking..?
I still believe in our boys!
(Edited by SJSUPhil) Go Spartans!

Posted 05-12-09 11:36 PM IP I just hope we didn't go too deep into our bullpen in this one. Win or lose vs. Stanford, the Nevada series was more important IMO. Now with the loss, it's even more important.

Not at all. In fact, I think we may have found a revelation in the bullpen in Craig Broussard. He pitched 3 outstanding SHO innings late in the game. Reminds me a little of K-Rod by way of Tom "Flash" Gordon. Don't just settle for an ordinary roadtrip...make it a SPARTAN DREAM VACATION!
