I'm considering selling my copy of Brawl.

Yes. I really am considering it. Why? The lag. The LAG. I can't take it. I bought the game for online play, and I'm simply not able to do it. I didn't pay 50 dollars for this.

I've researched the lag issue, and I recently found a couple suggestions to help the problem. I'll try them out, but if they don't work out...

Is anyone else as ticked as I am?

Well im sure its the same for everyone not just you. I still have some trouble with lag sometimes but not really often. I play one of my friends over in Washington state and its really not that bad at all. When SBF, DY and I play online, its not bad at all.

Why don't ya take a break from online for a bit? Try stage builder or complete SSE or something. But yes im sure the lag ticks off quite a bit of players. Either way, i understand what ya mean Neon.

**Check the Custom Stage topic if you want any of my stages**.

You ONLY bought this game for online play? I find it hard to believe that somebody whose top priority is online play evades me so much. I get online almost every night.

Secondly, if you're annoyed to the point where you're selling the game, I find it difficult to believe that you're on this board in the first place. The first two games had NO online play, and in my opinion, online > no online. Even if Nintendo is bad at the whole online thing, it still says enough that they tried, and this is the best online experience Nintendo has given to me to date (Phantasy Star Online doesn't count). While I agree the lag is terrible in spots, I'm overall satisfied for the time being. Nintendo will eventually recognize this as a problem, and be forced to deal with it. (They aren't Sonic Team.)

Just because Microsoft blows Nintendo out of the water in terms of online doesn't mean we should throw one of them in the trash completely. I routinely play Shade and DY, and it's a blast. I play Freddy, and it's a blast. I played DDM yesterday, and it was a blast. Given, we are in close proximity to each other, but that's something we should be grateful for. We have mostly lag-free matches, and no matter what happens, the game is FUN. I see how it could drastically improve, but it beats nothing. For that matter, the one online match I had against you was lag free.

I don't want to sound like a complete jackass here, but suck it up. I hear enough consumer whining at my job. There is no way that having online capability can HURT the game.

The only time I've had really bad lag is in Anyone Mode, and that's probably about 5% of the time.

Massachusetts and Michigan are in close proximity?

Anyway, if you decide to add my code at some point, we can rumble and test out that lag of yours.

I'm looking at this from a connection standpoint, not literally. Something like Mass. and Mich. is better than Maine and Cali.

You clearly aren't experiencing lag to the point I am. It's totally unplayable. Almost frozen to the point of no movement, practically every time. And that's even if the game even finds people for me to play with! It usually doesn't.

Again, you clearly aren't experiencing that bad of a lag issue. Many of us are. Google it if you don't believe me.

The game has been out for quite a while. Not only should they have foreseen this as an issue, but they should at least have some of the issue resolved by now. They don't.

Correction: For me, I basically have no online play. Like Mario Pary, Smash is specifically designed for multiplayer fun. Would you have bought it if you knew you couldn't play with your friends online? That's the defining feature that makes this game truly unique from SSBM.

Before anyone says it, I have a great internet connection (as does my boyfriend's house). No matter where I play, online stuff just doesn't work. Before you shoot me down, at least try and be a little empathetic first.

Would I buy brawl if it wasn't online? Yes.

After some googling, I can change my statement from "Nintendo will recognize this as a problem" to "Nintendo HAS recognized this as a problem." For this being a free online service, I think they're doing a decent job, and I have noticed the lag improve slightly over time. Also, I can play the game online with friends. With anyone is the screwy part, but I haven't done much of that anyway. I can see where it might be easier for me, as I play in the off hours of the day, but still, With friends > with anyone.

Anyway, Smash Bros. owned my life for a while, SSBM owned my life for a while, and this game is continuing to own my life. I may have made it sound like I play online constantly, but what I actually wind up doing is either popping online in 2 minute spurts, or setting up a match beforehand. I still do most of my playing offline.

So some people have bad lag, and some don't. I would mark that as a connection issue, but your connection is apparently great. This makes the problem considerably harder to diagnose, but I have noticed that out of all of us with brawl, you're the only one who has gone to great length to complain about the lag. We may be a small number, but you still don't represent "Many of us" on this board. I agree with DDM's proposal of "Let's play and see just how bad this killer lag is."

I'm free most nights, all of Wednesday, and early afternnoons. kthxbai

By "many of us" I wasn't referring to SBO. I meant the Brawl playing community as a whole, and a staggering amount of them are suffering as I am.

This is online Brawling for me on a good day. http://youtube.com/watch?v=znllywusgdI
This is how it goes usually: http://youtube.com/watch?v=2N7K7ktkBIw
That means to exit the match, I have to restart my Wii because I can't kill myself in under ten minutes. Perhaps now you can better understand my frustration.

From what I've read, distance is only one of many factors that affects online performance (I have read about neighbors who couldn't play due to lag). Nintendo claims the issue is due to "pipeline strain" or extreme traffic, which is plausible. But there's another side of the coin: If you're playing with a group of people, everyone has to play on the slowest connection speed so all of the players see the match happening at the same rate. All it takes is one person with a bad connection to bring the whole match down. Maybe I've just had really bad luck in getting matched with people who have slow connections. Playing with friends has been just as laggy though, so I don't know...

Even with lag-free play, there's still the issue of button delay (delayed game response to your button-pressing). *sigh*

Good news, though. One guy online said he called Nintendo about the issue, and they told him they were making a Wii update to help wi-fi run more smoothly. Nintendo seems to be in over their heads on this, but I'll try to be optimistic.

You hit it on the nose, Neon. Most of the time, it was a lot of traffic.

Example: When Halo 3 was first released, thousands couldn't even connect and many people lagged. Why? Too much traffic going through Microsoft's servers and we all know how big Microsoft is. That's saying something.

I'm not trying to shoot you down in flames, but give Brawl a fighting chance here. I've had lag issues before. Lately, they have been getting better. As DDM suggested, let's sit down and test out this lag, just the two of us. You and me live in the same town, so there really shouldn't be any lag. If there isn't any, then it may be a connection you have, even if you have a great one.

Dokapon Kingdom (Wii or PS2) is a very addicting game. Buy it! ^_^

ToS, ToA, or ToV have co-op. Tell your friends and play them. No seriously, playing a Tales game on co-op is much more fun than playing it single player. Experience the awesomeness that is the Tales series!

Currently trying to beat a bunch of unfinished games, ranging from N64/PS1 era to current gen. A certain someone's curse rubbed off on me. Save yourself from the Curse of the Unfinished Video Game!

That's a good logical approach, DY. Since our homes are literally minutes away, if you and I can play okay, that's a good sign. Then I can test our distance on a broader level with DDM and SBF. The ultimate test of distance would be with Sheik. xD

But yeah, as I said, distance is only one of many variables that affect online play. We'll see what happens.

Oh yeah, thanks for the advice and empathy, Shade. 'Preciate it.

And sorry I haven't added your codes yet, Sheik and DDM... school's been keeping me super busy. I'll try to do it this week at some point.

Yes, the friend test has to happen. Till then, and until Nintendo releases this fabled update, have you done everything in the offline game? That'll keep you busy for months.

In fact, my boyfriend did something that considerably helped the lag. Had something to do with a static IP, I didn't really understand it...

In any case, I had four consecutive practically lag-free matches. It was awesome, and a very good sign.

Yeah, I've done some of the offline play. Hardly any though, been too busy.

Ok, a game with Sheik in it is NOT a good role model for this topic. =P For some reason, the game lists my connection with Nexis as bad as the Sheik connection (Weird =/) but I have a green ball next to your name, Neon, which means that connection was fine. Nexis, did you happen to move to Australia? >_>

P.S. I'm not done, I'm here all night.

It's okay, Sheik.

I noticed the lag was particularly bad when we were all playing in "active" stages (like Wario's) and really big ones. Maybe we should avoid those next time.

Well tonight I decided to record proof of lag-effects and button delay on the game - The result is an online team battle in which you see two minutes, but the actual game took about 6-7. (I'm surprised nobody dced.)

Some points of interest - Me trying to get a bob-omb and failing miserably (that was funny to watch without lag), everybody's clumsiness around a smash ball, everybody usually missing attacks entirely, and Snake getting his final smash and shooting like a moron.

Yeah.
