Posted May 24th, 2009 06:18 PM IP I knew he used to yodel to answer his mother when in the fields.,etc., but never knew how he started yodeling. That is really interesting Dorothy and a tidbit I have never seen in any of the biographies I have of Roy and Dale. Thank you. Carole

You're welcome Mollkate -- glad I had some little known information to share.
The following is a quote from Happy Trails the Life of Roy Rogers.
'It was also while he was growing up on the farm in Duck Run that Roy learned to yodel. Andy Slye had brought home a cylinder player (the predecessor to the phonograph) along with some cylinders, including one by a Swiss yodeler. Roy played that cylinder again and again and soon began developing his own yodeling style. Before long, Roy and his mother worked out a way of communicating with each other by using different types of yodels. Mattie would use one type of yodel to let Roy know that it was time for lunch, another to warn that a storm was brewing, and still another to call him in at the end of the day. Roy would then relay that message to his sisters by yodeling across the fields to them."
I read this a long time ago, but can't remember which book I was reading.
Oh Well, anyway -- Here's how I got the information this time --
In search square type -- Roy Rogers Bio -- click web search
Pages of RR material will be listed --- CLICK the FIRST RR BIO
The next page is HAPPY TRAILS LIFE OF ROY ROGERS
It's in the fifth paragraph.

Posted May 30th, 2009 06:49 AM IP Hey we still have one of those cylinder players... actually my sister has... fascinating to watch them play. I can just imagine RR learning to yodel from it. I will have to see if my sister has the cylinder with the Swiss yodeler. Thanks for the info. Trigs Mom

Posted October 6th, 2009 07:28 AM IP You ALL have got to hear this video clip of a "little" 11-year old girl yodel.
Somebody needs to introduce her to Roy Rogers and his yodeling.
Email me @ merrijoy@comcast.net and I'll email it back to you.
Please put "yodeling" on your subject line.
(I don't open emails if I don't recognize the sender)
PS - I tried to post it here but something didn't work.

Posted October 7th, 2009 10:12 AM IP I've replied to 2 emails requesting the video of the yodeling 11-year old girl. Anybody else? "How can we not believe in the greatness of America?...we cannot, must not and will not turn back. We will finish our job. How could we do less? We're Americans."

Taylor Ware singing & yodeling audition on America's Got Talent some years back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2i-USnaJAIo
I seem to remember watching a fan music video on YouTube of her singing about the cowboys on the silver screen. I can't remember if she mentioned Roy or not in that song, but I wouldn't be surprised if she knows about him. “Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get — only with what you are expecting to give — which is everything.” ~ Katherine Hepburn, actress
