Posted January 3rd, 2008 10:02 PM IP I'd read the book earlier and recently had Dusty sign a copy for me after one of his shows in Branson. It is revelatory, and we all appreciate the candor. However, there is one moment in there that has given me a good deal of pause. Apparently, after young Debbie's death in that tragic bus accident, the father of the other girl killed with her, one Joanne, sought out a place on the Rogers family ranch and killed himself in his car. Since the spot was somewhat remote and involved an outbuilding that was seldom used, his remains were not discovered for a couple of weeks and it was Dusty himself, along with one of his friends, who discovered the body.
Of course, we all understand that individuals who are clinically depressed will do things that they would never do in ordinary daily life, but I am still amazed that the man picked the Rogers's premises to commit suicide - and could he not have foreseen that children would find him?
I am a professional director myself and clearly Roy and Dale were the most moral and humane of people in a business that is known, frequently, for the opposite. I loathe that this incident could have done nothing but compound their grief, and I certainly hope that they had some professional counseling/solace available for Dusty and his friend. DocPattyRL

Posted January 7th, 2008 03:00 PM IP Probably! The fact that he commited suicide, means he really wasn't thinking straight. Also, he probably just drove the car SOMEWHERE, and since he'd been there before, he drove automatically. Hot Heads and Cold Hearts never solved anything.

Posted March 24th, 2008 02:40 PM IP It's a great book! Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright that God may love thee. Speak the truth even if it leads you to your death. Safeguard the helpless. That is your oath. (strikes him across the face) That is how you shall remember it. Rise a knight!

You will listen to me. Listen! The Bretheren will still be looking to us, the Black Pearl, to lead. And what will they see? Frightened bilge rats aboard a derelict ship? No! No, they will see free men and freedom! And what the enemy will see is the flash of our cannons! They will hear the ring of our swords and they will know what we can do. By the sweat of our brows, and the strength of our backs, and the courage of our hearts. Gentlemen, hoist the colors.

Posted April 1st, 2008 11:48 AM IP Our pastor had a sermon on "empty boxes". He started out mentioning out his grandson played with the box more then his new toy. Sometimes in our Christian life we get playing with the empty boxes and forget about the gift inside... (reminded me of the book were the boys played with the boxes... hee hee). Trigs Mom

Ahhh!! Hardest question ever. *thinks* I like it all, I think my favorite are the whole-family-together parts. Though I don't come from a really large family, I can relate to some of those things, plus, it's just all around funny!!! Hot Heads and Cold Hearts never solved anything.

Posted May 19th, 2008 08:23 AM IP Mmm our carpenters (who grew up watching RR) said a few times that my boys remind them some of the stories they have read about Dusty & Sandy. They enjoy laughing at some of their antics... I on the other hand probably resemble Dale (in action only) chasing them down to discipline them... What two boys can get into... Trigs Mom

Posted September 7th, 2008 11:50 AM IP I can'at say what is my favorite part of the book. There are so many that stick in my mine. The two boys were very adventurous.
One part is where they did something wrong and Roy, Sr. spanked them. After he spanked them he explained he was their father and it was his responsibility to teach them.
Dusty and his brother were wrestling. Dale told them to stop, but they went right on wrestling. Dale then got her SHOW GUN and shot it off. That got their attention.
At the time I read the book I missed something.
At last year's Reunion I won a bid to have brunch with Dusty the next day.
i was talking about Dale shooting the gun off outside. I thought the boys were playing outside.
Dusty explained, no, they were playing in the house." WOW. That must have left some big, black, powder mark on the ceiling.
