Posted September 3rd, 2007 05:46 PM IP Growing up with Roy and Dale, is the book that Mr. Roy Rogers Jr. wrote.
What's your favorite part? This is just a place to discuss it.
I once had this book out of the library for about 7 months. (I'd really like to get it from the gift shop, but haven't had the chance to yet)
I have a cousin and we just" Ohhh" and "Ahhh" over it whenever we see it together. Hot Heads and Cold Hearts never solved anything.

The part that meant a lot to me is where towards the end of the book, Dusty and Roy had the special exchange about the sign. That spoke volumes to me. "How can we not believe in the greatness of America?...we cannot, must not and will not turn back. We will finish our job. How could we do less? We're Americans."

Posted September 3rd, 2007 08:18 PM IP ...You are talking about where RR took down the sign at the home Dusty built for RR/DE that Dusty never took down...and DE told Dusty she would not be a go-between for him and his Dad to straighten out their feelings about each other/how they felt/their love......and after that talk, they never let a day pass without saying I Love You to each other...yes..a nice section of book. The song somehow hit me as Special.

Posted September 3rd, 2007 09:49 PM IP That part was in the book? I must of missed something. I remember them talking about in on one of the HTT DVDS, but not in the book. It's been a while since I read the book though... 'Weep not but think that I have past

Posted September 4th, 2007 09:56 AM IP It is a wonderful book. I read PARTS of it to my boys. They really enjoyed it. It was at our local library but was lost. I will probably go ahead and buy one. It is a book that can be read over and over.
Wonderfully written. Trigs Mom

Posted September 4th, 2007 03:44 PM IP I shared this in 2001 on MB Numero Uno, but with the present topic being what it is, I'll share it again.
Merrijoy purchased my copy of Growing Up With Roy and Dale when she was going through Victorville and stopped in at the museum. The book was fresh from the publishers. She brought it home to me and I was thrilled. Like someone else said once, it was nearly impossible to put it down after starting it. No autograph though.
In 2001, Dusty was to appear at the Portsmouth event and I took my copy of his book along with me to see if I could get him to sign it.
During the afternoon, after looking all through the Ramada Inn for Dusty as well as all the displays, etc, I finally decided to go back to the van to change.
While I had been in the Ramada Inn, I used the restroom and after spending a little bit pf time back in the van, I couldn't find my book. I thought I must have left it in the men's room. I was partially dressed but no matter; I literally ran back to the men's room and searched all over to no avail. One fellow, not the one from Idaho, asked me what I was looking for. I explained and he said it was probably gone.
With a very heavy heart, I trudged back to the van feeling like I was going to be sick. After finishing my clothing change, I moved some stuff and there it was...it had fallen down and under. WOW!! Was I happy. That evening, I had an opportunity to see Dusty, he signed my book and it is safe at home!!! Just so that everyone knows, I did have my drawers on when I went running back in. "How can we not believe in the greatness of America?...we cannot, must not and will not turn back. We will finish our job. How could we do less? We're Americans."

glad you cleared that up...
I was watching RR/DE today and she had mentioned writing a book. "Following a Star" I think that is what she said. Has anyone read that one?
She also mentioned Dusty's book. Next time we go I would like to get his book and get it autographed.

Posted September 4th, 2007 05:52 PM IP To my knowledge, Dusty has not written anymore books and I want to think that the name of a book DE was writing did not in the end receive that name of "Following A Star" but was renamed.

Posted September 5th, 2007 04:52 PM IP I think the book that Twister is talking about is "Only One Star." Dale sings that song, too, on a CD. I assume she wrote it, but I'm not sure--"There's only one star and His name is Jesus." That's all I can remember off the top of my head. I just checked my RRDE CDs and that song is on the CD that she, Roy, and Dusty made in the late 90s, "Say Yes to Tomorrow."

She used that quote "There's Just One Star and His name is Jesus" in a Happy Trails Theater wrap-around that I just saw recently. "How can we not believe in the greatness of America?...we cannot, must not and will not turn back. We will finish our job. How could we do less? We're Americans."

Posted September 10th, 2007 10:11 PM IP I got Dusty's book, "Growing up with Roy and Dale" when I was at the museum this summer. Dusty signed it for me too. I do treasure it. It was a very good book and I know I will read it more than once. I enjoyed visiting the museum so much. Everyone is so personable. Red Neckers was a really neat guy. So down to earth. I enjoyed talking to him. They have a great show. Everyone is so nice.

Posted September 19th, 2007 02:18 PM IP I've been wanting to read this book for a long time--need to order it from interlibrary loan today since I'm at the library. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright that God may love thee. Speak the truth even if it leads you to your death. Safeguard the helpless. That is your oath. (strikes him across the face) That is how you shall remember it. Rise a knight!
Knighting out of Kingdom of Heaven
You will listen to me. Listen! The Bretheren will still be looking to us, the Black Pearl, to lead. And what will they see? Frightened bilge rats aboard a derelict ship? No! No, they will see free men and freedom! And what the enemy will see is the flash of our cannons! They will hear the ring of our swords and they will know what we can do. By the sweat of our brows, and the strength of our backs, and the courage of our hearts. Gentlemen, hoist the colors.
