Hi There Everyone,
Our family rewatches many of the Roy Roger films on DVD several times a week. For instance, in this last week, we watched "Under Nevada Skies" and "West of the Badlands". Our 19 year old daughter came home for a visit and she wanted to watch a Roy Rogers film. I have noted that many of the movies have Roy as the Roy Rogers character and many of them have other names. Therefore, I was wondering why Roy is himself in some of the movies and goes by other names in other movies. I am aware that his name at birth was Leonard Slye.
Anyway, I wish that more people could appreciate the wonderful movies of Roy Rogers. He could have a good influence on them, in a time, when we desperately need good role models in our society.

Although I don't know of anyone who has made a count of the movies he played himself in, I would say that probably most of them, he was Roy Rogers.
As to his earlier movies with Gene Autry, I'd have to look to see what character roles he played.
However, I don't think he was ever billed as Len Slye in any movies, his or otherwise.
His early days of singing, that's another matter.

I think that Roy just wanted to be who he really is himself.
Which sounds like something he would do.

It seems like when he was first starting out, he seldem used Roy Rogers for his name, but after his movies became more popular, he started using RR.
Hot Heads and Cold Hearts never solved anything.

A lot of people answered this, but I have a few additions to make. Roy's first movie starred him under his own name--as did the second and I think the third. Then he acted in several historical films, where he played a character from history. I think almost every one of the films where he did not play himself, he was a historical character. In the mid '40s, he started acting "modern" Westerns, and from then on he played "Roy Rogers" exclusively.

In the movie: THE OLD BARN DANCE, in the credits, Roy was using the name DICK WESTON.

What about in Son of Paleface? Was his last name Rogers or Barton?

When Roy was with the Sons Of The Pioneers, they were in Gene Autry's 1936 movie The Big Show. I don't think neither he nor any of the Pioneers are credited, only as a group. He would still probably have been known as Leonard Slye at this time.
I really like this movie as it takes place during the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition in Dallas at the time when the brand new Fair Park was built which is the home of the Texas State Fair now. Many of the beautiful art deco buildings are still standing and have been refurbished. There is actual footage of a western Cavalcade performance that is really good.

What a great line-up of Len/Dick/Roy movie listings, BBCowgirl. I'm certainly going to copy this off to save for a later date. (Now where should I put it so that I can find it later?) Many thanks for your research on this.
Many years ago, I had some movie magazines that catered to western stars. There was a great line-up of every movie plus every early place that Roy had appeared. The break-down was not as complete as what BBCowgirl has put together, as far as Len/Dick/Roy details, but it had been the best I'd seen up to now.
Where's the magazine? Well, it was part of my large Roy collection that had to be sold off years ago. Several items had survived the separation of man and stuff; but not much.

Roy had a different last name in The Ranger and the Lady too---I think it was Roy Colt.

Didn't he go by his last name in that movie too? Did Gabby call him "Colt" or Roy? I need to watch that movie again.

Nope. I can't remember a movie where Gabby called Roy anything but Roy...with the possible exception of "You young whippersnapper!"

Gabby called Roy "Buck" every so often but I reckon it was done as a nickname.

Steve - Jerry - Bill - Clint - Brett - Vance - Captain Colt - Jeff...these are all names that Roy used instead of Roy Rogers in different movies.
How about non-starring roles...
Tom - Roy (Not Roy Rogers) - Other than Fletch from Dark Command, are there any others? I'm sure there are.
I admit, I've been looking at White's book, but most of the quizzes we've had here, the questionaire has used a resource for the questions to be given to the questionee...right?

Great idea, Cowpokey D!! Okay, here I go. In Old Cheyenne starred Roy as Steven Blain. I haven't seen one with Jerry. Roy was Bill Brady in Bad Man of Deadwood. Again, haven't seen one with CLint. He was Brett Starr in Sheriff of Tombstone, Vance Corbin in Robin Hood of the Pecos, and Captain Roy Colt in Ranger and the Lady. I haven't seen a movie in which his name was Jeff.
Hey I just thought of something! Roy had a trio of Bill roles! Bill Brady in Bad Man of Deadwood, Wild Bill Hickock in Young Bill Hickock, and Buffalo Bill in...darn, forget the name of the movie! Was that Young Buffalo Bill?

Acutally, RoyRogersFan and I quiz ourselved by trying to get all the questions from our own memories. But getting them from a book is okay too, and you sure put together a fun quiz, Cowpokey D!!! I can't wait to see if I got the right answers. I'm wondering about a couple.

Roy played the part of "The Arizona Kid" in "The Arizona Kid."
He played the part of Roy (just Roy) in "Jeepers Creepers," Fletch in "Dark Command," Captain Colt in "The Ranger and the Lady," Steve Kells in "The Border Legion," Steve Blaine in "In Old Cheyenne" and Jeff in "Nevada City."
What movie did he play with the on-screen name of Tom?
What movies was he 2 different names in the same movie?
After what movie was he exclusively Roy? (Not counting Macintosh and TJ)
If you're counting, he was Steve in 3 different movies.
