Posted May 5th, 2007 12:04 PM IP I had an experience awhile ago which I've just got to share with you guys. I was at the library, posting one of my stories on here, and a little boy who I think had a mild case of cerebral palsy came over. He wanted to know what I was doing, so I explained I was posting a story on a MB. He wanted to know what MB, so I said, "Well, have you ever heard of Roy Rogers?"
He started to shake his head, but then his mother, sitting behind him, suddenly did this perfect doubletake. "Roy Rogers!" she exclaimed. "I know who Roy Rogers is! I was one of his biggest fans!"
Of course, that got my attention fast! We started talking, and it came out that she used to watch Roy Rogers all the time when she was a kid. She hadn't watched him since she was younger than fifteen--she was probably in her forties or fifties--but she must've been one big fan! She knew that his real name was Leonard Franklin Slye, that his first wife was named Arline, that he and Dale adopted a ton of kids, that her horse was named Buttermilk, that Roy had a dog named Bullet--I didn't mention Trigger, of course, because EVERYONE knows about him. We had a great time talking! It was amazing to me to meet someone like that--and I think she was a little amazed to meet someone under 20 who was just as big a fan as she used to be. I suggested that maybe she would enjoy watching some of the movies again, and she said she might just do that.
Who knows, maybe she'll show up on here someday! May God keep you smilin' down a million happy trails!

Posted May 5th, 2007 12:21 PM IP That's cool! I have some stories of my own. First of all, some one who is my dad's friend from when we used to live in the city is a big fan of SOPS, the Lone Ranger, and RR. We found this out last year, after he had come to the cottage where we were vacationing at.
The next story is of a lady in our church (who is really cool, by the way) and last year, before they moved up here, she was talking to my sister, mom and I after church about homeschooling. CGFan and her were talking about horses, and then this lady asked me what my expertise was in. I said Roy Rogers, and she said that she was a RRDE fan when she was younger! Then, last month, Mom and I showed her my RR quilt, and this lady said I was blossoming when I talked about them. I wasn't quite sure what to say about that though.
I met another member on Narniaweb (a place I'm on) and she likes RR! I found that out thru some PM's and the fact that she said in one topic that RR movies were really good. So we kind of talked back and forth.

Posted May 6th, 2007 03:54 AM IP There is a local band group out here called Trails and Rails that play at all the local street festivals. They do RR DE and lot of of SOP tunes and train songs too. I talk to them a lot after shows as i am on the Park and Rec Council out here, and have gotten to know them all as avid RR fans. They rekindled my interest from childhood and Vietnam years in Roy and DE.... in fact by listening to them play and sing .Then I sought out this site on Google just fooling around on the web one day...so lucky aye..er Hawk...eye!!.
p.s. I luv your short, sweet story Leah! I am sure RR heard it up there on high too and is smiling down on you as I type this! Chief Blackhawk (Hawkeye) once said,' this is the place I shall make my stand' as he crossed the mighty Mississippi into Ioway Territory in 1832. Roy always respected the Native Amercans in all his films and had Choctaw blood. Native American Tribute & Musical Wigwam site http://eowawa.com

Posted May 6th, 2007 06:50 PM IP I know this isn't a way to approve and help hire a minister, but two years ago my church was looking to hire a new minister. We were allowed to ask questions of the person we were considering. One lady asked him what he liked to do to relax when he wasn't at work. He said his idea of relaxing was to put in a Roy Rogers DVD and the whole crowd said "Hey Saundra he has your vote." they were right he did and he is our minister today. butterfly

Posted May 7th, 2007 12:18 PM IP A firefighter from CA moved here many years ago for about 1 year to work with Forestry here so they could swap ideas and his parents lived near RR/DE and he talked a lot about things that since I have read...so, I know he was telling truth. I just happened to mention around him one day that RR/DE were my heroes and he started laughing and said...My Parents live a couple miles from them!

Posted May 7th, 2007 03:52 PM IP It seems I've met tons of people who knew RR or at least were fans of his. My science teacher's dad worked with Roy on a tv show once and he has a home video of him and Roy singing together while they were fishing.
Some friends of my parents had a friend who was a RR fanatic. He's not alive anymore but they have a lot of his RR stuff. They gave me a picture of him and Roy when RR was making a movie near where I live. They also gave me an autographed pic of RR and DE that was made out to him.
I'm sure I'll think of more!

Posted May 20th, 2007 09:01 PM IP I have a new story too tell. My adopted Grandma phoned this evening, and she and my mom were talking. When Mom got off the phone, she said that my grandparents took a bus and went down the the RR museum! And they got to meet Dusty and have their picture taken and they were VERY impressed with the Christian atomsphere, and to top it all off, they said that some people from a town 20 min. away from where I live went on the same bus ride to the museum! I'm almost keeling over with jealousy. Okay, it's not that bad, yet. 'Weep not but think that I have past

Posted May 21st, 2007 09:07 AM IP Wow! Nice story, CBFC! My personal story goes like this: Mom gets DVD player for Christmas, family needs new TV to work with DVD player, we go into the city day after Christmas, go to Walmart, see RR DVD we buy. We watch DVD, I get hooked. Mom gives me 6 months to be a RR fan, but I prove her wrong. Okay, that's the CONDENSED verision. 'Weep not but think that I have past

Posted May 21st, 2007 03:36 PM IP I went into a local antique store just today, just hoping to look around. And lo & behold-there was an old RR book! And the woman at the counter said that her father had been partners with RR in ranch/farm near where we live!
So RR really did have property near Lost Valley, Senorita! "...there's nothin' in life that's worth doin', if it cain't be done from a horse..."

Posted May 21st, 2007 03:47 PM IP That's soo cool, yellowrose! What book was it?
One time last year when my sister and I were on a trip with some friends, some of our friend's friends somehow got to talking about RR. They only talked about him for a couple seconds, but when someone mentioned that I was a RR fan, they seemed to make it seem like being a RR fan wasn't a cool thing. So I just ignored the comments. There wasn't any, but he said he'd remember if there was because he I guess was a fan of them when he was younger. 'Weep not but think that I have past

Posted June 6th, 2007 10:46 AM IP Thanks for sharing all the great stories! A friend of the family was visiting with my Mom in the hospital and when he got ready to leave he started singing Happy Trails! He didn't know that I am a Roy/Dale fan but rest of the family laughed and told him. It brought a smile to Moms face so I was grateful for that. SStacey

That's a really neat story, CBFC.
Although I really do have to agree with you about it didn't affect your brain.... Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright that God may love thee. Speak the truth even if it leads you to your death. Safeguard the helpless. That is your oath. (strikes him across the face) That is how you shall remember it. Rise a knight!
Knighting out of Kingdom of Heaven
You will listen to me. Listen! The Bretheren will still be looking to us, the Black Pearl, to lead. And what will they see? Frightened bilge rats aboard a derelict ship? No! No, they will see free men and freedom! And what the enemy will see is the flash of our cannons! They will hear the ring of our swords and they will know what we can do. By the sweat of our brows, and the strength of our backs, and the courage of our hearts. Gentlemen, hoist the colors.

Posted June 17th, 2007 07:15 PM IP Another story. My mom, sister, and I went to a surprise going away party for the friend I wrote my first RR story for, and when I was there, I was talking with a young lady who was probably in her twenties. We were talking about movies, Narnia-she's a big fan, so we were comparing the new movie with the BBC verison, Nancy Drew, and Roy Rogers. She said her family has only seen one, My Pal Trigger, but they REALLY liked it! They have Under California Stars as well but they haven't seen it. 'Weep not but think that I have past
