Posted July 4th, 2007 02:52 PM IP Twister...I MUST add The Alamo Village on my list of places to go to sight-see/have fun. We have been in Tucson many times and I love the area and last visit, we went to a movie lot there...interesting!...also, crossed the border into MX near Tucson and that was fun and made my husband happy to be in MX for few hrs. We also went in a Cathedral on the way to the border...it was being cleaned/repaired on outside so, my pics are not the greatest but...one lovely Cathedral.....San Xavier Mission. The JW Marriott was in a beautiful location and our suite overlooked Tucson in the distance. What a sight to see! I enjoyed crossing the border to MX there more than at El Paso.

Posted July 5th, 2007 05:31 PM IP Roy made headlines again! Or rather, Dale did. I was browsing through our library’s magazines when I saw the headline—“Happy Trails in someplace or another”. Needless to say, I sat down right where I was and read the cover story. It was written by this guy who’d never ridden and was assigned to do a photography/journalism job somewhere in the Middle East. Proclaiming himself no Roy Rogers, he got assigned to ride this palomino stallion—who he promptly named Trigger. The rest of the story was about what he did in this country, as well as the fun he had riding “Trigger”. At the end, he realized that he was not only riding a whole lot better, he was horse crazy too!
So I thought that was pretty neat. Once more, it just shows how much Roy and Dale are still in people’s minds and memories—and what a completely timeless song Happy Trails is!
May God keep you smilin' down a million happy trails!

Posted July 5th, 2007 05:32 PM IP Aha, one other Roy-related sighting. This time, I was in a local thrift shop and I found an ancient record from some guys called the Triple X—and one of the group was Hugh Farr! Boy, he looked different! This must have been made in the 80’s, and he’d lost about forty pounds, not to mention getting a little older looking in other ways. But he still had the same understated twinkle in his eyes and the nice smile—and there was no doubt about who it was! I thought that was kind of neat. May God keep you smilin' down a million happy trails!

Posted July 5th, 2007 06:33 PM IP Isn't there a "Happy Trails" limo service in Branson? It seems to me when we were there last I saw a vehicle with that name on it in regard to some kind of a business. Posted July 23rd, 2007 02:50 PM IP I came across an article a while back which mentioned Roy Rogers, Trigger, and Glenn Randall in the March 2006 edition of Western Horseman magazine about a man named Robin Wiltshire who trains horses for movies, TV, and even TV ads, such as for Wells Fargo Bank. He trained the horses in the Budweiser 1995 Super Bowl commercial to play football -- really.
Anyway, here is what was mentioned: during Mr. Wiltshire's growing up years "the American West and its western heroes, such as the Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, and John Wayne, captured the yound horseman's imagination.
"'Robin tried to replicate the stunts he'd seen on TV: stage coach chases, rearing and falling horses. ...
"'Robin's specialty is liberty training, a technique which teaches the animal to respond to cues, free of restraints. ... Robin ... was greatly influenced by two other horsemen: Glenn Randall, who taught tricks to Roy Rogers' Trigger, and Pat Mantle. ..."
I thought that was pretty cool, so I thought I'd mention it. “Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get — only with what you are expecting to give — which is everything.” ~ Katherine Hepburn, actress

Posted July 24th, 2007 09:33 AM IP I heard RR and Trigger mentioned on a sitcom commercial few weeks ago. I just can't remember which one. The guy said something like: "Well I thought I would just ...save the day ...and ride Trigger into the sunset like RR." Or something to that extent... i was flipping channels and didn't get the whole thing.
I have heard RR mentioned on the Antique Roadshow. They had RR contest gun/holster etc... the lady had entered a contest as a child. She really wanted the pony but got 2nd place which was a gold plated RR gun/holster. That was on last year but we saw the rerun again not too long ago. Trigs Mom

Above in the top row, from L-to-R are Tex Terry, Pat Starling, William Boyd and Bob Nolan. Bottom row from L-to-R are Roy Rogers, a "Mrs. Peters" (who remains unknown/unidentified), and Spade Cooley. Patricia/Pat Starling did a few westerns, including a Jimmy Wakely and two of Sunset Carson's later films which were NOT at Republic Pictures. The photo is from the 'Western Hall of Fame Hoss Opera' at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles on November 28, 1948. It was organized by Tim Spencer and singer/songwriter Cindy Walker ("You Don't Know Me" and more, including nearly all of the Bob Wills songs in the Russ Hayden films). Posted November 17th, 2007 12:56 PM IP I heard another reference to Roy! This was particularly interesting cuz it was in a radio dramatization of a 1940's top box-office hit. You know, the kind movie makers still talk about. And Roy was mentioned in the same breath with Gary Cooper. I thought that was significant for the modern movie historians who say that Roy was only a star for children. Gary Cooper was only one the of the top A-Western actors, so being mentioned with Roy is period proof that Roy was NOT only a child star.
Hey, that brings up an interesting point. I wonder, back then, whether they had to get permission from Roy to use his name in the movie? I mean, it was just one comment but that still would fall under copyright, correct?
May God keep you smilin' down a million happy trails!

Posted November 19th, 2007 03:47 PM IP In the movie Die Hard, when Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) asks John McClane (Bruce Willis) if he thinks he is John Wayne, Rambo or Marshall Dillon, McClane answers: "Always kinda' partial to Roy Rogers actually. I really like those sequined shirts." In the same film, McClane takes on the pseudonym "Roy" in order to prevent Hans from learning his real identity.

Posted November 20th, 2007 06:54 PM IP We are using RR/DE guns/toys in on our Christmas parade... We are celebrating Oklahoma's 100 years and we are doing a float with the different centuries... for the 1950's we are having some of the kids dressed in RR/DE guns, hats... etc... also they will be saying the pledge. In the fifties is when "Under God" was added to our Pledge of Allegience... All depicting the different centuries on Christmas morning.. Trigs Mom

Posted December 3rd, 2007 12:22 PM IP We didn't get rained out but we were almost blown away... hee hee... 50 mph gusts... made it difficult... but oh well we had fun and threw lots of candy... we couldn't use some of the props because of the wind.... Molly (dog) jumped out of the truck and was chasing the candy.. oops... so Robin (pastors wife) & I had to go get her and put her back on the float... she (Molly) was hysterical... she laid down because she wanted to stay with the kids on the sidelines... so Robin and I had to pick her up... she weighs over 90 lbs... well we pretty much fell on the float with Molly on top giving us kisses... hee hee. Everyone was laughing and cheering.... Trigs had the crowd going with some new roping tricks he learned in Mexico.. they were cheering him on... It is a small town and is so much fun since everyone participates one way or the other.. Trigs Mom

Posted December 4th, 2007 04:09 PM IP it does sound great! The unplanned stuff was probably the most fun! Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright that God may love thee. Speak the truth even if it leads you to your death. Safeguard the helpless. That is your oath. (strikes him across the face) That is how you shall remember it. Rise a knight!
Knighting out of Kingdom of Heaven
You will listen to me. Listen! The Bretheren will still be looking to us, the Black Pearl, to lead. And what will they see? Frightened bilge rats aboard a derelict ship? No! No, they will see free men and freedom! And what the enemy will see is the flash of our cannons! They will hear the ring of our swords and they will know what we can do. By the sweat of our brows, and the strength of our backs, and the courage of our hearts. Gentlemen, hoist the colors.

Posted December 11th, 2007 06:33 PM IP This isn't a direct mention of RR/DE, but it's still cool. In the latest epsiode of Heartland, based of the books by Lauren Brooke, Amy and Mallory are talking briefly about old cowboy movies and how Amy will have to watch some more to get help with a horse.
