Posted February 9th, 2007 03:16 PM IP Does anybody know the true date of when Dale first got Buttermilk? Cheryl puts it at 1945 in her book, but I think she might have gotten the date wrong. Why would Dale have ridden another horse for 5 years after that if she’d had Buttermilk back in 1945? Also, for the doubling experts on the MB, was Buttermilk ever doubled? I’ve watched pretty carefully in the Roy Rogers Show, and as far as I can see, he wasn’t.

Posted February 9th, 2007 03:16 PM IP Oops, double posting, but I remembered one other question I wanted to ask. What was the first movie that Buttermilk appeared in? The first one I’ve seen him in was Trigger Jr., in 1950. Was he in anything prior to that? May God keep you smilin' down a million happy trails!

Actually the leading lady may have been Penny Edwards, but I'm pretty sure whoever it was, they were riding Buttermilk. I concure with yellowrose13. That horse that Penny Edwards used in Spoiler of the Plains, did look like Buttermilk.

Posted February 11th, 2007 12:50 PM IP Uhuh, Penny Edwards DID ride Buttermilk in the movies she made with Roy. At least she did in HEART OF THE ROCKIES. I've read that she rode Buttermilk all the time, but I know for sure that it was Buttermilk in that movie. Either that of the most perfect double ever. It was even the same tack. It's easy to reconize Buttermilk's tack, because he always wore a hackamore instead of a bitted bridle. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright that God may love thee. Speak the truth even if it leads you to your death. Safeguard the helpless. That is your oath. (strikes him across the face) That is how you shall remember it. Rise a knight!

Posted February 11th, 2007 01:09 PM IP Ooh, me and my double-posting. Anyway, I was just thinking, and Dale must have gotten Buttermilk either late in the year 1950 or early in the year 1951, because the first movie released in 1951 was the first one to star Buttermilk as her horse. I don't know this for sure, but logicly that seems right. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright that God may love thee. Speak the truth even if it leads you to your death. Safeguard the helpless. That is your oath. (strikes him across the face) That is how you shall remember it. Rise a knight!

I think the conversation took place on either Spoilers of the Plains or In old Amarillo. I remember Penny Edwards was the guest. Like Gabby said, "As long as memory don't fade we got it made"

Posted February 12th, 2007 10:53 AM IP Kinda makes sense, 'cause Roy didn't really like it that they doubled Trigger so much either, he thought he was really capable of doing his own stunts. But the studio insisted, so he had no say. I guess that maybe they liked it that Buttermilk did his own stunts, if'n ya see what I mean. Trigger did a pretty good one twice in TWIGHLIGHT IN THE SIARAS, he slid down a fifteen-foot sheer rock cliff TWICE! The first time I didn't think about it, but when we watched it again last night I was possotive, it's Old Trigger, not Litte Trigger! I was glad of that one! Posted February 14th, 2007 04:11 PM IP Oops, I forgot. Thanks for answering my questions on Buttermilk! I didn’t think he was doubled. I like that little horse—don’t you? Maybe he wasn’t as famous as Trigger, or as super-special, but I think he was a great horse in his own way. I like the way he’s so neat and precise and quick in the way he moves—not a lot of wasted energy and certainly no dawdling. In fact, he’s a lot like Dale in that respect!
He also was so pretty—that light buckskin coat and then the super-dark mane and tail and points. All in all, he was a worthy horse to carry Dale off into the sunset next to Roy and Trigger. (Okay, that was a little corny, but I sometimes like to get poetic. It wasn’t that bad!)

Well, thanks for the flowers. But you've got to understand that The Durango Kid is not a KID anymore. The "KID" qualifies for senior-citizens discounts already. In fact NO ONE really knows what T.D. Kid looks like, because he wears a mask all the time whenever he goes to film festivals or RR Roundups, or "hanging-out" on the streets of Tombstone. (maybe I shouldn't use that word "hanging"). They still have REAL hanging gallows in back of the courthouse in Tombstone.
Just hope and pray that the Kid doesn't un-mask when our trails meet. If he does, YOU'LL-BE- SORRY.

I think that was very nice, Roughriding Senorita!
By the way, on our move out here we had to pass through, Holbrook Arizona. At least, I think it was Holbrook. Maybe it was Winslow. Whatever town it was, they had a huge mural of a western town painted on the side of one of their old downtown bulidings. In the middle of the street(in the painting) were two cowboys and one was mounted on a horse that looked exactly like Buttermilk! Alot of buckskin horses tend to look alike but there's no mistaking Buttermilk's distinct markings. And if I didn't know better, I'd say that it was portrait of Buttermilk. Maybe the artist desinged it with him in mind. "...there's nothin' in life that's worth doin', if it cain't be done from a horse..."

Posted February 19th, 2007 08:41 AM IP When I was googling Buttermilk to find out where the name Taffy came from, I came across the Happy Trails Highway website that had the source of the quote...
Quote:
"Quote from board administrator Dave
of the Official RR/DE Website;
* "Buttermilk" was rescued by a cattle farmer who bought him from a horse trader while he was taking him and others, to the slaughter house. The horse had been severely abused and was very mean. The new owners quickly began to work with him, and eventually he came around to become friendly and affectionate. These folks named him Taffy, and were training him to become a cutting horse in competition.
* While at the Minatare rodeo in Nebraska,
Glen Randall, who was appearing there with his Liberty Troup, saw him in competition and apparently must have been impressed. Shortly after, Glen ended up bringing him back to California with him.
There are more details, but that is the gist of the lucky and humble beginnings of "Buttermilk." * End of Quote" |
Dave, if you happen to come across this post, did Glenn Randall change the horse's name from Taffy to Soda? Is there a book or something that mentions Taffy? I'm just curious.
