Posted January 18th, 2008 00:03 IP I'm heading out in a minute to my 2nd meditation class. I've ordered "Zen Mind, Beginners Mind" because apparently I've given my old copy away. I also got Derek Lin's commentary & annotated Tao Te Ching.
I did some brief meditation for 4 days this week just to get started.
Let's see!
In the meantime, is anyone familiar with the Shambala publication of the Tao by John Wu? I had that laying around. Is it a decent translation?

Posted January 18th, 2008 07:37 IP Hi, Mr.O,
hope you enjoy yourself!
I don't know how exact Wu's translation is, I'd have to compare it to Derek's, as he and others have reassured us his is very close and so to find out how much Derek's and Wu's differ could be a good measurestick, other than that I wouldn't know, since I don't speak chinese.

Posted January 18th, 2008 10:05 IP Bradford hatchers translation Mr.O, is a word for word translation directly from the ancient chinesse to english with no compromise for speculation. It was written in 2005, it is clear and the meaning penetrates to depths other tranlsation seem to lack for me. Everyone is different however and finding the text that resonates to your heart is your personal task.

Line J of chapter one uses the obejctives, this is not using the word to mean personal goals bit to means to see the self existent or material world defined by self or the subjective world.
