Sharon Dembinski, RNP,CMA
Sharon@MethadoneSupport.org

Sharon is a Nurse Practitioner, Certified Methadone Advocate, practices at Discovery House, a Rhode Island-based Opiate Treatment provider with 16 clinics in 5 states and is the Lead Developer and Coordinator of the "Mother's On Methadone" (MOM) Program  at Kent Hospital in Rhode Island.  Sharon is also on the Board of Advisors to Methadone Support Org.

Sharon became a Recovery and Methadone Advocate when she discovered her son’s addiction to heroin. After a one-year struggle, 5 rehab admissions and 3 overdoses, her son finally achieved a sustained recovery and has maintained that recovery for over 3 years.

Sharon decided to try and help others and learned all she could about the effectiveness of MMT as well as the problems that exist in the clinic systems. She had found her calling and became a Certified Methadone Advocate. She started working on a proposal for the Mothers On Methadone (MOM) Program at the hospital where she worked as a Nurse Practitioner in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.  She discovered that at some hospitals MMT patients were only allowed to visit their babies one hour a day.  Sharon knew that this was not beneficial for the maternal-newborn bonding that is so essential for both mother and baby.

After a year, the "MOM" program was finally approved and is now up and running at its full potential. "MOM" supports and educates mothers on MMT or those dependent on opioids for pain management. The highlights of the program are:

*   Prenatal support, education and consultation with a healthcare professional specializing in methadone, pregnancy and the newborn where all the important aspects of pregnancy, MMT, neonatal abstinence syndrome and breastfeeding are discussed and recovery support is offered.

*   Kent Hospital offers a Level II, Special Care Nursery staffed with nurses,  nurse practitioners and physicians with specialized training and experience treating babies experiencing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.

*   A counseling and assessment session with a social worker who can offer assistance to link the mother with all necessary community agencies, cost-free classes including childbirth, infant care, breastfeeding and infant CPR.

*   Nursery Volunteer Program that includes cuddlers to fill in during the times the baby's family is not available.

*   With the goal of promoting bonding and educational opportunities in mind, prolonged parental visits are encouraged and supported with cafeteria vouchers that are available for those who may need them.

A very familiar name to our organization and website, Methadone Support Org, is Sharon Dembinski. Sharon is our pregnancy guru and my personal hero! In addition to everything else you already know she does.....she now practices at the Discovery House clinics also in Rhode Island in her "spare" time! and of course....she also has this page here at the website. Yikes.....did someone say "spare time", lol???

That being said.....on with the alert. Sharon recently discovered an error in TIP 43 on morphine dosing for the treatment of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). She alerted CSAT to this potential danger and the following is their response/alert. I would also like to take this opportunity to once again thank Sharon for her hard work ......making this her life's passion! Had Sharon not found this error....or....."typo" infant's lives could have been lost. THANK YOU, SHARON!!!....Carol

Hi april,
I am new to this board too and I am so happy I have found a place to come for support and questions. Any question you have will be answered.
I just found out im preg and my ultrasound doesn't correspond with my LMP so I have no idea what my EDD is yet. The best thing to do is educate yourself. I have not only been posting questions here, but I have spent a few hours researching on the internet. Find out how your OB feels, find out your clinic doc's stance on MMT and pregnancy, and find out what the hospital and the pediatric group that is on call (that rotates thru the hosp) feels about MMT and baby's born on methadone..ask them what their protocol is. And good advice frm my clinic doc was to ALWAYS DEMAND A METHADONE LEVEL ON THE BABY AS SOON AS THEY ARE BORN!! Not all babies will be born with methadone in their system....no matter how high or low the dose.
Like I said, the ladies on this board will point you in the right direction and welcome you with open arms....I hope that I didn't step on anyone's feet by posting this....
Linds

Hi April!!!
Welcome to the Board and Congrats on your pregnancy sweetie!!! I've had 2 little boys on methadone (4years and 7months old) and I've been on methadone since I was around 9weeks pregnant with my 1st son!!! It really was the best thing I ever did! Methadone has given me the chance to be a great Mum and to live a normal stable life! My 1st son was due at a similar time to your little boy (give or take a day or 2), but he was a bit early and came on 28th Feb!

Linds of course you didn't step on anyones feet! Im sure everyone is as gratefull as I am that you are taking the time to help others! Jess and I have been so busy lately so it's great to know you are posting lots! You are a member here and any help you can give is priceless. Your posts are just as important as anyone elses (old or new). You gave April some fantastic advice, so thankyou Hunni! I must admit I don't know much about the relevance of methadone levels at birth... maybe Jess or Sharon would know more on this subject?

So Welcome April and thanks Linds!!!! Hope to hear more from you soon April!

Love Vicky x

Thank you Vicky! I am very excited about being so close to delivering. I have to admit though, that I'm a little scared too.....well, more than a little scared. Thats normal though, I guess.
Its funny, our unborn child already has more clothes than I do! We recieved so many baby clothes as gifts and of course I couldn't resist buying some cute stuff also. So she has a BIG wardrobe already.
We still need to buy some things for the nursery in the next few weeks but we have the majority of the shopping done, thank goodness.
Honestly, I am so ready for this pregnancy to be over! No more nausea, heartburn, fatigue, constipation, insomnia, leg cramps, etc.! Also, I want to meet this little person thats been growing inside me. I already love her very much and I can't wait to hold her for the first time. I have a weird feeling that I'm going to deliver a few days late though. Like instead of the 17th, I think I'll go into labor the 20th or 21st.Then again, I also had a "feeling" that the baby was going to be a boy and I was wrong there.
So, you live in the U.K. ? What area do you live in (if you don't mind me asking)? I have always wanted to visit England. We went to The Netherlands last year and it was great, its such a beautiful country. I really love Europe and so many of my ancestors came from the U.K. , so that is where I would like to vacation next.

Hey Hun!!!
I loooove buying baby clothes!!!!! There isn't quite so much choice for boys though. But there's still enough for me to shop for hours! lol. I live in England, about an hour away from London. We are being swamped by snow at the moment and have had lots of school closures, which is hard when you are a working parent!

Sounds like you've had lots of nasty pregnancy sympotms!! Bless you! It will be interesting to see when you do give birth, I wonder if you will be late like you think??? Talk to you more soon Hun!

Wow, it must be awesome to live so close to London! Its been snowing a lot where I live too. I was raised in Florida and so I was never used to snow. I always thought it was so pretty and I complained about living in a state where it doesn't snow. Well, now...I HATE it! LOL. Its such a pain to drive in and it gets so cold in the winter here. I miss Florida so much now and yet when I lived there, I did nothing but complain about it. Oh well, I guess the grass is always greener on the other side right?

fascination,
Welcome to our family!! I am glad you found us too! So, you are due real soon!! I bet you are so excited! I see you are having your 1st baby and its a GIRL!!! Yeah both my kids are girls too! I LOVE shopping for girl stuff. You are going to love it, as I am sure you already do! There is way better stuff, at least for clothes for girls. As far as I am concerned I LOVE having girls! Its great. They are carbon coppies on me! I love it! Although, they are both as stubborn as I am too! haha!
I read tht you use to live in Florida! I use to live there as well! I now live in Massachusetts! SNOW-SNOW-SNOW!!!! haha... it really hasnt been bad this year though. When I would move to florida I would miss the snow and the changes of the 4 seasons though and then I'd move back and then I'd miss florida and move back there.... I did that a lot when I was younger! Now I have stayed in Mass. since 2002 and have not been back to Florida since. I plan to go there on my honeymoon in November to Clearwater Beach! I always loved it there, besides we dont have the money to go to an island or anything, so Florida will have to do it for us... which is fine with me! It'll be nice to be back.
Well, I hope to talk with you a little more before you have your little girl and in the mean time, please get rest because its almost time and you will need it! Trust me! Again, congrats on your pregnancy!

Hello all. I am new to the site and I'm very glad to have found it. My due date is April 2nd, 2010. This will be my third girl and my first baby while on methadone. I'm still very new to treatment and have so many questions in regards to having a baby while on methadone. My last little one came a month early and so far i'm contracting quite a bit for being only 33 weeks, so i'm sure this one will be joining us before her set due date as well. I'm just hoping to be a bit more informed on what to expect before she comes. Looking forward to learning all you have to offer Thanks...

Welcome to the site MargiesMommy! If you , Tsunamimommy or anyone else would like to chat my email is fascination1980@yahoo.com
I am having my baby on Sunday (the Dr. is inducing labor). This is my husband's and my first baby (its a little girl) and I am on 70 mg. of methadone daily. I was on 56 mg. but I had to be raised because my dose wasn't holding me later in my pregnancy. Apparently its really common for pregnant women to need an increase in their third trimester as their blood volume is much greater and they are gaining weight. I am also on a split dose which really helps when you're pregnant.
I was scared to death when I found out I was pregnant. I had been tapering down my dose to get off of methadone completely and I thought that I needed to get off the methadone even quicker when I found out I was pregnant. Then my doctors told me that that was dangerous and I needed to stay on the methadone at a stable dose. Otherwise I could lose my baby. So, I stopped tapering and even though I knew that I was doing the best thing I could for my unborn child in the situation I found myself in, I still felt awful. I beat myself up emotionally about it a lot. Then I found this wonderful website! I am so thankful for this website and the women on here. They have helped me soooooo much , I only wish I found this website earlier in my pregnancy! When I have been feeling really down, I can come on here and remind myself that I am doing the right thing.
So, don't hesitate to post and ask questions. The ladies on here are very sweet and knowledgable.

Thanks Fascination, It's very nice to hear from someone in a similar situatuation. I have a great support system but it's just not the same as hearing it from someone going through it. Congrats on your new delevery, little girls are such a special blessing. This will be my third girl! I was also in the prosses of tappering off before I discovered I was pregnant. I started my pregnancy at 30 mg and am now at 60mg. It's very hard to go backwards and I also harbor alot of guilt. Just finding this site and hearing these stories has helped me tremedously. I hope that your induction went smoothly and I'm sure I speak for everyone on here when I say we can't wait to hear your story and we wish you the best in recovery and bonding these next few weeks. Thanks Jessica1381 it's so wonderful to suddenly have all this support. I've been going it alone for months, so confused and scared it's just amazing to see a bunch of women come together and support each other like this. So thanks for making yourself so available. The clinic I go to is just ok, it serves it's purpose but I don't feel they are very knowlegable on pregnancy and methadone so I don't receive much support in that area. Again thanks so much for everything ladies.

Wow! Jessica1381 thanks again so much. I feel so welcome, it's wonderful. I have to say i'm completely amazed and feel so lucky to have all this support all the sudden when i've been without and going it alone for so long. The fact that you give out your number and say call anytime is so comforting to me i'm beyond words. My councilor at the clinic I attend isn't available to me like this at all and getting support or answers is sort of like pulling teeth or asking for a kidney for crying out loud. It's taking me a while to wrap my head around this all and drum up all the questions and concerns i've kind of shoved to the oh well pile the last few months, just didn't think i'd find the answers to these questions or someone to listen. Just going through all the posts and such has answered a great number of my concerns. Just today i was pulled aside at the clinic by the nurse and was asked to sign my name several times to a form saying i was counciled in a number of areas such as breastfeeding on methadon, nutrition, postpartum depression and so on went the list. I was never given any information on these subject whatsoever during these last few months going to the clinic. Because i had previously learned most of this info on my own i just signed off not wanting to deal with it however; when i did not sign off saying I had been given information on nursing while on methadone the nurse told me to get the info from my councilor and to sign the paper(I did) then I asked my councilor for the info and she said to ask my Doc. It's just an on going hassle and pain in the butt every time I step foot in that place and it's been needless to say draining and quite frustraiting just trying to make it through this pregnancy while having to deal with that place. All i want is to deliver a healthy baby and be as educated and aware as I need to be to make this process smooth for baby, myself and the rest of my family. Sorry went off a little there... I just want to be sure you know how awsome and important what you are doing here is, all of you. Jessica1381 i'm working on a small list of questions that I can't seem to get answered and i'll contact you soon for some long awaited answers So pleased to be here, Tsunamimommy
