Sharon Dembinski, RNP,CMA
Sharon@MethadoneSupport.org

Sharon is a Nurse Practitioner, Certified Methadone Advocate, practices at Discovery House, a Rhode Island-based Opiate Treatment provider with 16 clinics in 5 states and is the Lead Developer and Coordinator of the "Mother's On Methadone" (MOM) Program  at Kent Hospital in Rhode Island.  Sharon is also on the Board of Advisors to Methadone Support Org.

Sharon became a Recovery and Methadone Advocate when she discovered her son’s addiction to heroin. After a one-year struggle, 5 rehab admissions and 3 overdoses, her son finally achieved a sustained recovery and has maintained that recovery for over 3 years.

Sharon decided to try and help others and learned all she could about the effectiveness of MMT as well as the problems that exist in the clinic systems. She had found her calling and became a Certified Methadone Advocate. She started working on a proposal for the Mothers On Methadone (MOM) Program at the hospital where she worked as a Nurse Practitioner in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.  She discovered that at some hospitals MMT patients were only allowed to visit their babies one hour a day.  Sharon knew that this was not beneficial for the maternal-newborn bonding that is so essential for both mother and baby.

After a year, the "MOM" program was finally approved and is now up and running at its full potential. "MOM" supports and educates mothers on MMT or those dependent on opioids for pain management. The highlights of the program are:

*   Prenatal support, education and consultation with a healthcare professional specializing in methadone, pregnancy and the newborn where all the important aspects of pregnancy, MMT, neonatal abstinence syndrome and breastfeeding are discussed and recovery support is offered.

*   Kent Hospital offers a Level II, Special Care Nursery staffed with nurses,  nurse practitioners and physicians with specialized training and experience treating babies experiencing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.

*   A counseling and assessment session with a social worker who can offer assistance to link the mother with all necessary community agencies, cost-free classes including childbirth, infant care, breastfeeding and infant CPR.

*   Nursery Volunteer Program that includes cuddlers to fill in during the times the baby's family is not available.

*   With the goal of promoting bonding and educational opportunities in mind, prolonged parental visits are encouraged and supported with cafeteria vouchers that are available for those who may need them.

A very familiar name to our organization and website, Methadone Support Org, is Sharon Dembinski. Sharon is our pregnancy guru and my personal hero! In addition to everything else you already know she does.....she now practices at the Discovery House clinics also in Rhode Island in her "spare" time! and of course....she also has this page here at the website. Yikes.....did someone say "spare time", lol???

That being said.....on with the alert. Sharon recently discovered an error in TIP 43 on morphine dosing for the treatment of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). She alerted CSAT to this potential danger and the following is their response/alert. I would also like to take this opportunity to once again thank Sharon for her hard work ......making this her life's passion! Had Sharon not found this error....or....."typo" infant's lives could have been lost. THANK YOU, SHARON!!!....Carol

Hi Heather!

Welcome to this site!!!!! There's still lots of us posting on here but for some reason not many people post on the Due Dates bit, if you look at all the other threads (not the sticky ones) you'll see alot more people posting and to the right of each topic it says who last posted and at what time/date they posted on that thread. It's still being updated by Sharon, whenever she finds a new Study that is relevant to us she will generally post it in the Info and Discussion section for everyone to read, then a week or 2 later she transfers it to the News and Studies section.

Congrats on your pregnancy!!!! My sis-in-law is due 3rd October aswell! I love the name you've picked for your little one....Melania is gorgeous! I'm SOOOO glad Methadone is working well for you, it really has been a life saver for me too. I've had 2boys on MMT. My 1st was born 4years ago (I was on a dose of 90mg) and I had my last little boy 8weeks ago (this time I was on 65mg). I was very lucky as neither child needed treatment for withdrawals or NAS as its called. (NAS stands for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome).

If you have any questions make sure you start a new thread, that way you will get more answers. I'd advise you to read as much as you can on this site as it really is so helpfull. By the way I think your Avatar is great, I love the dancing baby!!!! I really hope you stick around and keep us all posted on your pregnancy and birth. Goodluck Hunni!!!!

Congrats again!!!!

Thanks so much Sharon, Vicky, Susie, and Jessica! I didn't expect such a welcoming I'm really glad for it though. I only have a handful of people in my life that understand or support my decision to be on MMT, my husband doesn't even approve. He's totally against abortion, but when we found out I was pregnant, that actually came up. Only if I thought my baby was in immediate danger would I even consider that, I know I couldn't live with that personally. But after talking to my counsler and reassuring him our baby wouldn't be handicapped from the methadone did he settle in and calm down.
But other than that, I spent yesterday calling around docs and talking to nurses about my situation. I was met with understanding and some not so understanding people. But I got a call today to meet with a doctor for a "get to know you" meeting. What does that mean, he wants to make sure i'm not a junkie? I'm going to go so I can interview him as well. Wish me luck and if anyone thinks of any questions for him that I haven't thought of...

Thanks everyone for making me feel at home here!

Take Care,
tasper

Hi Everyone. Just found out I'm having Irish Twins. For anyone who doesn't know what that is It's when you have 2 kids less than a year apart. I have a beautiful baby girl who's almost 4 months and I found out I'm about 5-6 weeks pregnant. Oops. So here I am back at this website again. I was on 70 mg of Meth for my entire last pregnancy and she had absolutely no withdrawls so I'm hoping I'll be that lucky again. Im even considering having a home birth or having it at a birthing center so the baby won't have to be in the NICU while they watch her for a week. I'm not sure if that'll be possible but I'm gonna try. I delivered my baby girl myself in the car and she had no problems. She was in the NICU for a week just to be monitored and rthey treated her like a sick baby even though she was perfectly healthy. All hooked up to monitors and they even gave her formula without my permission or knowledge which destroyed my chance to breastfeed. I just don't want to go through that again. Well my due date is around January 2 which is exactly one year after my daughter's birth, I'm just hoping I can handle two little babies.

wow lol i was almost in ure shoes.. i believe i had my period we have 2 weeks to make sure i am not pregos..lol i had sex 3 weeks after csection.. lol not again and a few times after tht..lol my daughter is 2 months old and well i think well wait till she is 2

Oh Wow Angie!
How great being due the 1st of January! That would be an amazing birthday! 1/1/10 just looks great!!! Although I know babies have a habit of coming as and when they feel like it, so the chances of your little one coming a different day are quite strong!
Anyway Congrats again Hun!

Hi Taryn! You came to the right place! I too was scared to death being on methadone and being pregnant.
I recenlty gave birth to a healthy baby girl on April 7. I was on 15mgs when I first became pregnant and I had to incease my dose to 30 mgs becasue I started to feel withdrawls which is normal in your 2 or 3rd trimester. It is so important to stay comfortable and to not withdrawl because if you are feeling it so will your baby.
My little girl did have NAS and had to stay in the hospital for 16 days. It was so hard to go through it but it was so worth it. The most important thing to remeber is to stay as comfortable as possible and to eat healthy and take your prenatal vitamins. Find a good doctor that knows about methadone and pregnancy if you haven't already.
You will get through this and you will have a beautiful baby when it's all over. Stay strong and read as much as you can on our site. There are alot of stories that you may relate to and that might help you.
If you ever have any questions, please feel free to IM me anytime!!

Welcome to our family!!

Love.

Taryn Congrats on the pregnancy!! I came here to when I first found out I was pregnant.. it was my second pregnancy but my first on methadone I was so scared! I'm on the oppisite end of the spectrum from you though.. im at the end of my pregnancy (6 days to go till my due date!! YAY!!) I had a couple of scares during my pregnancy like not being able to find the heart beat, the baby measuring small and some other things but in the end it all works out and just remember that you are doing the right thing by being on methadone and staying it while you are pregnant. Good luck and keep us all posted!!

Hi Taryn!!!!
Welcome to THE BEST FORUM EVER!!!!!
I'm so pleased you joined, I love to see so many new members! Congratulations on your pregnancy! Don't ever feel bad for being on Methadone as you ARE doing the right thing for both you and your baby. I've had 2sons on Methadone. My 1st was born 4yrs ago and I was on a dose of 90mg, and my 2nd was born 20th April this year and at birth I was on a dose of 65mg. I was so fortunate that neither child needed treatment for NAS (withdrawals). They both just stayed in hospital for the mandatory 5day Observation period which babies born to MMT Mums should always stay for. It can sometimes take up to 5days for withdrawals to show up. They are both healthy and happy and have made my life complete (corny I know, but it really is true!).
Like all the others said read as much as you can and ask us lots of questions, I'm sure we can all help you! You WILL get support here. Forget about the relapse, it's not important, you're doing the right thing NOW and thats what matters!! We've all been there, I know I've relapsed in the past...no-one here will judge you...just help you! Looking forward to hearing more from you.
Congrats again!

Hello. I am new to the site. I posted a thread to kind of introduce myself and my situation. My due date is March 15, 2010 which just so happens to be my birthday as well. I am very excited. I am so scared as well because this is my first pregnancy on methadone. I have 2 other children- I did not use when I was pregnant with them. I am just scared something will go so wrong. That is why I am so thankful I found this site! Thank you so much for all the information!

hi, my name is victoria, im due nov 6, 2009! i just recently found this site and ive already learned so many helpful things, my situation is that ive been talking methadone throughout this pregnancy without a perception, im not abusing it, i was badly addicted to viks after i had my son, i was talking 10-15 viks a day, it wasn't the regular ones they where the ES, well i knew i had to stop and plus my Dr wasnt giving me anymore so i was W/D so bad my mom who is on methadone gave me some so calm my w/d (no one wants to see there child suffer please dont judge her) well ever since then she has been leaving me abt 10mg every morning. well im close to my due date and im scared out of my mind no one knows im on this stuff but my mom not even my boyfriend of 6 years knows about this im so ashamed, im scared to tell my doc cuz i dont want my boyfriend and his family finding out if i knew he would keep this confidential i wouldnt have a problem telling him but i have no idea how the doctor would approach it. please if anyone has advice for me or have been in this kind of situation let me know what i should do.

Hi Victoria,
(My name is Victoria too, but everyone calls me Vic or Vicky!)
I've answered your post in the list of threads, but just wanted to say please, please try and get in a clinic Sweetie! I've emailed Sharon to see if she can help at all. You need to tell your Doctor and he HAS to keep it confidential! None of my family or my Boyfriends family knew about my Methadone use, so I asked the Doctors to NEVER mention it in front of anyone, which they didn't. If they needed to talk about anything 'like that' they would call me away on my own and were very discreet. They have to keep it Confidential, but it doesn't hurt to make them aware that you don't want methadone discussed in front of anyone else but you.

Things will be so much easier for you if you can get to a clinic Hun!
Let me know how things are going for you today.
Have you tried calling any clinics?
