capebreton902 Member Posts: 10 Registered: Mar 2007  Posted March 30th, 2007 08:36 PM   IP              hey!!!! congradulations on your pregnancy! i'm pregnant as well and i s on methadone! i'm 25 weeks pregnant TODAY! yay for me! almost 6 months in a week or sumthin! anyways im kayla 19 years old from Canada, i'm pregnant with my first baby! im so excited i got pregnant just before i got clean back in october but didnt find out till after i got out of detox and got on the methadone program i was like a month pregnant when i found out! anyways this forum is pretty cool, im new to it as well! people are very nice & good to talk tO! got alot of advice and are willing to give it & share there stories! this is what i like!anyways take care ill be talken to ya again! byeeeee ...kayLa dEnny
bigbgz Member Posts: 4 Registered: May 2007  Posted May 4th, 2007 01:33 PM   IP              Hi me and my fiance are currently on methadone, my fiance gave birth to my daughter who is 1 now on methadone.try to stay at as low of a milligram as possible my fiance was on 45mg when she delivered. My daughter had to stay in the hospital for 4 weeks they give them phenobarbital for the withdrawls, my daughters withdrawls were very minimal to she really wasnt withdrawling at all. another thing is child protective services stepped in which they do in any case of a child born on methadone so be carefull! everything worked out fine for us but they will come to the home 3 to 4 times after the baby comes home to make sure you have everything for the baby. Like i said she is 1 now and completely fine actually very advanced for 1!! usually they make you raise your dose the farther in pregnancy you get because of more weight and the baby growing and taking more stuff out of you.so your dose will have to go up just be carefull and try to detox some towards the end. if you have any questions just let me know, i have been through it and can answer any of your questions!! Especially towards the end, you may not feel like your in withdrawls but the baby may feel it and if your baby is in stress in the utero the baby will have severe NAS. What I heard is it doesn't matter wheter you are on 50mg or 200mg it will make no difference with NAS. But if you try to taper before your due date it will cause fetal stress and the baby will more than likely come out with severe NAS. So the best advice that was told to me was to stay stable and comfortable as much as possible so the baby doesn't go through withdrawls in the utero. Thanks for the advice on the child protective services, its funny smoking is worst than methadone and they don't send the CPS in for that and sometimes the worst parents in the world don't even get them called on them. But hey at least when they show up we all can say see are lives have changed and we are normal(whatever that is) parents no worst or better than any other.

When I first got pregnant I freaked out and joined this group. I had a great woman and mother tell me that it would be hard, her son ended up having to stay in the NICU for a little while and it broke her heart. But a nurse there told her that a year from then her little boy would be healthy and she would not even think about the time he spent there. And that is the Gods honest truth. My son was born after 3 days of labor drug free by choice thank you! I went in telling them I wanted drugs ASAP but after I was in labor I just knew I could do it and if it got too bad I would get them. Anyway after three days of labor and a c-section my little boy was born 8lbs 11oz! Well that night he started to show signs of withdrawal and they took him to the NICU. It was the worst feeling in the world. My clinic kept telling me to up my dose ( which a lot of people have to do) but they told me not to worry because it was so very rare that a baby needed to stay longer in the hospital or have anything happen because of the methadone. So they kept increasing my dose and I kept letting them fearing withdrawal while pregnant and putting my baby in danger, which is a real concern. But I ended up being on almost 220mg. I had a split dose which you should get right away. That way you are not getting the whole dose at once and your body takes most of the methadone instead of the baby getting more. Well my son ended up being in the NICU for three weeks. The worst three weeks of my life. But now he is a perfect one year old who is incredibly advanced develop mentally, that is according to his Doctor not just me. He is so much more advanced than all of the other babies his age. He crawled and sat up later but that had to do with him being so big, not the methadone. Other than that 1st three weeks the methadone has not affected him at all. So no matter what happens your baby will be fine. And just so you know my son was in the hospital a lot longer than most. There was a little girl born the day before my son to a mother on methadone ( which helped me a lot having someone to talk to who was going through the same thing) And she was out of there very fast. As River said.....it is NOT a good idea to taper while pregnant! What the mother's dose is during pregnancy......has NOTHING to do with how the baby will do. They pretty much have this down to a science now.
