Hi thanks nenama mom for helping me post, i have a question.... i am not a frequent methadone user, i only have been taken it on fridays. every friday. i have had bad back problems and my father says methadone was a form of a pain reliever, and he would give it to me every friday, because thats when he would get it, he is on methadone. anyhow i never took it everyday, just on fridays. and i recently found out i was pregnant. im about 6 weeks along. and i have been taking the methadone once a week since i've been pregnant. and i so scared...does anyone know if this will harm my unborn child? and will it cause me to miscarry? i have quit now, but am scared of the damages it might have done. please if anyone knows about this can anyone help me answer these questions. thanks so much andrea

Andrea,
I think you can relax. Methadone is a pain reliever. It is also used for opiate dependence. Babies born to mothers on methadone do very well. Babies born to mothers who utilize methadone daily for medication assisted recovery often experience withdrawal that is easily treated. They are born at normal weights to mostly healthy pregnancies. I would expect there would be no negative effects to your baby at all, especially since you are no longer going to take methadone. Are you on any other medications?

Andrea,
I'm glad I relieved some of your anxiety. I'd advise you to also discuss your concerns with your health care provider.
I'm sure they will agree that you and your baby will not be effected by the use of methadone as you described it in your posts.
I wish you the best! Please keep us posted!
Hugs,
Sharon

I'm curious as to why you are only taking methadone once a week- do you only take it when you are in extreme pain or are you taking it recreationally? I know you said you have back problems, but to only be taking it on Fridays suggests that you are functional during the week and just take it once for whatever reasons. I am just curious. Seriously though, if you are only taking it once weekly and don't feel any withdrawal symptoms then no harm would come to you or baby if you stopped taking it. I would recommend that if you don't need it, don't take it. Every medication you take affects an unborn child, and even though methadone is one of the safer medications to take during pregnancy, it still has potential effects on the child (like Sharon said, the child can be born dependent).

Methadone was my life-saver and I had 3 children while taking it. But I also made sure I didn't take any medications I didn't need to take while I was pregnant. It's just safer that way.
