Posted March 9th, 2006 05:27 PM IP Hi everyone, my name is Ness and I'm from NSW Australia. I have been on methadone for 10years (-minus 18months when I tried to cope without it) and I have had four children while on the program, one during the time I came off it, one stillborn and now am 30 weeks pregnant with the next one.
Before anyone asks, yes I own a television, yes I know what causes pregnancy and believe me I have heard every other comment too
All of my children so far have not needed morphine for methadone nor have they scored high results on their finnigans charts when born. Only my third child who was 6 weeks premmie had problems, but that was due to the doctor taking care of her stuffing up her medication from a collapsed lung (instead of weaning her off morphine which she was taking for pain for her lung etc he stopped it cold turkey, knowing I was a methadone mother )- she ended up with severe seizures and another 6 weeks in intensive care at another hospital where after every test on me they could the doctors finally believed that i wasn't using anything - her withdrawal was too bad for the amount of methadone I was having!!
I'm not sure of the procedure in the US but here when you are pregnant you are given an open script to increase your dose when you need to - i usually increase at around 28 weeks, then when the baby is born I can come back down again. some mums here have to increase a couple of times to coreect their dose. I wait until it is keeping me comfortable for 23 hours, then increase by 1ml which seems to make a big difference.
anyway I've blabbed enough, I'll get going coz the babies are going off - by the way my children are - Jordan male 13, Maddison female 10, Casey female 6, Sascha female 2 1/2, Mackenzie female 18months. Yes my husband and partner have a house full of girls to cope with.

Welcome to the board! The story about one of your babies was so sad. How is she now? which one was she....how old is she now?
methadone is not given out so liberally in the US and pts are never allowed to increase their doses as need with an open script, in fact many have to go to a clinic every day to be dosed. The liberal dosing you were afforded is probably the reason why your babies did not withdraw even to need treatment with morphine. I have a theory and I'm hoping to have the opportunity to study it one day.
Thanks for sharing your story and good luck on that next baby!
