The Democratic Party has enjoyed a near-stranglehold on Lorain politics for decades. It's machine poltics. A similar dynamic to what we see right next door in Cuyahoga County.

I don't think voters do well to dwell on what's happening with the parties at the national level when they look for candidates in local elections. Perhaps there are people who don't like George Bush, Newt Gingrich or Sarah Palin? So what? That has little to do with a Republican candidate for local office who is focusing on local issues. What's even worse, you don't even get to choose the best Democrat candidates...because the party backs their own insider cronies in the primaries and the challengers usually get crushed by the machine.

Until the Democratic Party in Lorain is challenged electorally, you'll keep getting the Urbanek's of the world. If that's okay with you...fine...but it doesn't look to me that the Democratic Party dominance has done wonders for Lorain.

I'm not saying all the prominent Democratic candidates are poor choices, but at least look at the alternatives in the electoral races. Actually listen to what a Republican, Libertarian or Independent candidate has to say and weigh it on its own merits. Don't just reflexively vote for the candidate with the "D" at the end of their name. And begin to demand better candidates from the Democratic Party.

There are two Libertarian candidates for city council in the November election, Ms. Early and Mr. Stipe. Do some research on their positions...call them and ask them questions, etc...

If you keep voting for the candidates supplied by the Democratic Party machine, you'll continue getting this...

Thanks, Mr. Stipe. You are welcome to post your positions and thoughts in here anytime. The people can decide if they like what you stand for. I'm hoping you win a spot on the council, of course, but any and all candidates are welcome to this forum.

I am very curious to see how this plays out. I think it might take a few times for people to actually look at what a "Libertarian" really is.

Bacon,
Here is a link that might shed some light on the principles of the Libertarian party. Be sure to take the World’s Smallest Political Quiz.
