Hi,
My 9 year old son with GT has had two minor nosebleeds the last couple of days. We've been using a humidifier each night since his last nosebleed a couple of months ago. However, the humidifier is two years old. It automatically blows air at around level 37 in humidity. I was doing research on the internet and it said the humidity should be about 50? Does anyone know about this or use humidifiers on a daily basis to help prevent nosebleeds? Maybe the humidifier is too old and it not releasing clean mist?
2. The internet also said keeping the house cool using an air conditioner might be good for the nose too. Does anyone do this as well?
3. Lastly, there is a nose humidifier at the link below. I was thinking of buying this but was wondering if anyone had tried it and had success. You're supposed to hold it to your face..kind of like an oxygen mask.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi Cyndy,
My son with GT is 7. We have a whole-house humidifier that runs off the furnace. It keeps the house about 40% in the winter. I only use an extra humidifier in Quinn's room when he is sick. What works best for us during dry months, is putting Aquaphor in each nostril EVERY night. Especially when he is having constant oozing, the Aquaphor really helps.

Thanks,
Tami

We have a while-house humidifier as well and keep the humidity around 50% during the winter. We live in Ohio where the winters are very cold and dry. This has prevented me from getting a nosebleed for a couple years. I don't have to use an extra humidifier in my bedroom. I would say the nose humidifier might not be the best option because you would want it to be running while your son is sleeping. I don't think it matters how old the humidifier is, as long as it is running constantly. However, I have found that the invisible mist ones seem to work better than the ones where you can see the mist, at least for me.

Also, about the air conditioner keeping the house cool... I don't think this is necessary as it is more about the amount of moisture in the air so when it is warm/hot outside there is naturally more moisture in the air which is good to prevent nose bleeds. I don't think it would help or hurt.

Thanks for the replies so far!
Tami and Kari, I have never heard of a whole-house humidifier. That sounds great. Do you recommend a company so I can look into getting it installed and about how much does it cost?
Also, Tami, is Aquaphor the healing ointment in the tub and is it like a lotion?
Thanks,
Cyndy

Hi Cyndy,
AprilAir is the kind that we have, here is a link:

http://www.aprilaire.com/index.php?...gory=5&item=600

Any local Heating and Cooling service company would be able to install one of these. I can't remember how much is was, maybe $300-400??

Yes, Aquaphor is the healing ointment. It works very well for my son.

Good Luck!
Tami

I never thought I'd actually say that I'm thankful for the incredibly uncomfortable humidity here in Georgia but GT has given me a different perspective on life!

I know how you feel, Helen. I have only had on horrific nose bleed and that was a couple of winters ago. Mostly have small bleeds and they just scab over. Really a nuasance(spelling sorry) but nothing major. I contribute my minor nose bleeds due to all the humidity around here.
Hope all is well and everyone is safe and in good health.
Take care,
Kaytee

Kaytee, like you I don't have major nose bleeds any more, but just the little ones when the nose is irritated either by colds or often when I am staying in a hotel room and can't open windows. I find that air con is not too good either.

As I live in Phoenix and our humidity can go as low as 7% during many months of the year, I have a humidifier in each room Luisa stays. I travel with one too everywhere I go. I also use AYR gel on her nose 3 times a day and whenever she starts picking any scab on her nose I apply an antibacterial oilntment too. She has not had a bad one since February. I´ll check this whole -house one too. Thank you for sharing.
Luisa is almost 5 years old.
take care

Hi Rema,
If you are looking for an individual humidifier for your son's bedroom, I think any of the brands they sell in drugstores/target/etc. would be fine. Despite what your hematologist says, it will help. Also, I have mentioned before about Aquaphor or Vaseline in each nostril at night, we do this and it really minimizes Quinn’s nosebleeds.

Thanks,
Tami

Thank you for the information about the humidiifer and the vaseline. I have been using afrin nasal spray every night since he got out of the hospital hope that helps.

Hi Rema,
I am a little concerned with using Afrin too regularly. It is a vascular constrictor so I think it could irritate the membranes if used too much. I use it for Quinn only when his nose is bleeding to help slow the flow or ooze in conjunction with other methods like pinching and ice or packing. I get worried about long term effects of the Afrin, especially on kids. I think for regular nightly use, Vaseline or a nasal gel will help protect the nasal passages which will minimize bleeding. I just wanted to share that, because I worry about the effects of using Afrin with Quinn.

Thanks!
Tami
