Posted 30th July 2010 14:29 IP Got asked this a few times at the weekend....fear not, it is coming. 3 big things got in the way of the process though.
Firstly, and most lovely, band members Johnny and Anna got married so we've been pre-occupied with that. We had the best day and if you've seen the photos you'll already know what a beautiful moment it was. We did a short Amsterdam set in the evening too.
Apart from getting wed our Johnny has been working and completing his own debut album 'The Fosse way'. It's a marvelous collection of songs which prove his co-write on 'Feels like growin' up' and solo write on 'Rosie' were just the tip of the iceberg of his own songwriting skills.
He's preparing two launch shows too in September, I'll be down the front at the Liverpool one.
Thirdly, I've been doing Master of Arts degree in Irish studies at the University of Liverpool. I very foolishly thought an MA would be similar to doing a degree, i.e. You can fuck about until the last minute, then do the work and pass.
You just can't do that with a Masters, it's a big step up academically and requires a certain amount of re-wiring your brain. It makes it even harder when you are diametrically opposed to the central philosophy of the institute you find yourself in.
The revision of Irish history began in the early 1970's as a reaction to the troubles in the north of the island. It began as a movement which coldy analysed past Irish historical events and found many uneven bumps in the Nationalist story. It ended up anything but academically impartial and essentially represented any point of view that attempted to undermine Republicanism. In short, the sort of Irish history they teach you at U.O.L. attempts to exonerate the role of the British on the island of Ireland.
Why do it then? Well, it keeps me out of trouble and using your brain in this way is addictive. Playing rock and roll for a living can lead you down some dark corridors of extended adolescence, you might start to think you're something special. You are not. The music is the thing that's special.
Also it made a beautiful and perfect circle. It's expensive to do an M.A. and mine was part financed from the money I made from Christy Moore covering my song 'Does this train stop on Merseyside?'. So rather than piss the money up a wall I used it to study the man and Irish music in my thesis. As I say, a perfect circle is made.
I hand in the work next month and then that's it. Done. I can't wait for that moment, it's been the hardest thing I've ever done.
Because there have been all of these barriers it's given me more time and even more songs have appeared. I hit a purple patch and you never know whan them fuckers are gonna come around. The good news is there's at least two albums worth now and a whole host of other ideas. One of which is to record an album of brilliant songs I've heard over the years written by people you would never of heard of. But that's for the future.
Even if we finished a record tomorrow they wouldn't put it out til next year anyway, that's just the way it works. It WILL be worth the wait though.... promise.
A heads up on the joint headline show with us and Damien Dempsey at the Stanley Theatre in Liverpool on Saturday 23rd October, tickets are shifting quickly for this one so don't miss out. Dan Donnelly will be opening the show as well and his new album is a real belter. Amsterdam will also have the brilliant Erica Nockalls from the Wonderstuff guesting on violin for the evening. Gonna be one hell of a night.
Ian

Posted 30th July 2010 14:52 IP I'm happy to wait. Sounds like it will be a stormer when it's done so we will be rewarded for our patience!
Can't wait for Johnny's show in September (London) and of course 'Dam in November.
Well done of getting the MA almost done. I know what you mean about the studying being addictive. I am just glad I am taking mine at a slower pace.
x This ain't Upton Park, it's Brisbane Road
It ain't White Hart Lane, that's the wrong postcode
It ain't Stamford Bridge, this is E10
And you're gonna hear Rockin All Over The World again.
